They have Ted Nugent, we have Sheryl Crow.

That alone makes me proud to be a Democrat.

Field Poll: Obama’s approval rating in California highest since second term’s start

President Barack Obama, in California this weekend for fundraisers in San Francisco and Los Angeles plus a stop in San Diego, is more popular now with Golden State voters than at any other time since the start of his second term, the Field Poll reports.

Sixty percent of the state’s registered voters approve of Obama’s performance in office while 33 percent disapprove, according to the poll of 1,002 voters conducted Sept. 17 through Oct. 4. That’s up from his 53 percent approval rating in May, and far better than his 45 percent approval from September 2014.

“He’s letting his hair down and voters here like that — it’s a very Democratic state,” Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo said. “This year he has gone back to his Democratic roots. In earlier years, he was trying to take compromise positions and get things through the Congress by working with the Republican side. I think voters here didn’t like the positions he was taking.”

Obama wishes he could have such numbers nationwide — 45 percent of Americans approve of his job performance while 50 percent disapprove, according to the latest averages of nationwide polls compiled by Real Clear Politics.

The Field Poll also found more Californians approve than disapprove of the president’s handling of both the nation’s economy — 58 percent to 36 percent — and foreign policy, 49 percent to 42 percent. Unsurprisingly, Democrats are overwhelmingly supportive while Republicans are overwhelmingly opposed.

After two debates from the other party, the American people will more brain power shared among at least three candidates than the collective "intelligence" of the Republican Party field.

New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan to Run for US Senate

CONCORD, N.H. — Democratic New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan announced Monday she would challenge Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte, setting the stage for a highly competitive race that will be critical in determining majority control of the Senate in the next president's first year.

Hassan, who made her announcement in an online video, said she's running to bring a bipartisan, common-sense governing approach to Washington that mirrors that of New Hampshire. She said Washington has given in to powerful special interests and lobbyists who rig the system against the middle class.

As evidence of dysfunction in Washington, she pointed to Republican efforts to end the president's health care law, which would jeopardize Medicaid expansion, and the fact that people can't refinance their student loans.

"The people of New Hampshire deserve better, and in order for us to make progress, we need to have the kind of bipartisan, problem-solving, results-driven approach that I've led here," Hassan told The Associated Press.

Hassan, a two-term governor, has long been considered Democrats' best chance of beating Ayotte, a former attorney general who won her seat during the 2010 Republican wave election. Democratic voter turnout spikes in New Hampshire in presidential years, handing the party a win here in 2008 and 2012. Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, the party's front-runner for the presidential nomination, won the 2008 primary and has long been popular in the state, marking another potential hurdle for Ayotte.

Playboy to Drop Nudity as Internet Fills Demand

Last month, Cory Jones, a top editor at Playboy, went to see its founder Hugh Hefner at the Playboy Mansion.

In a wood-paneled dining room, with Picasso and de Kooning prints on the walls, Mr. Jones nervously presented a radical suggestion: the magazine, a leader of the revolution that helped take sex in America from furtive to ubiquitous, should stop publishing images of naked women.

Mr. Hefner, now 89, but still listed as editor in chief, agreed. As part of a redesign that will be unveiled next March, the print edition of Playboy will still feature women in provocative poses. But they will no longer be fully nude.

Its executives admit that Playboy has been overtaken by the changes it pioneered. “That battle has been fought and won,” said Scott Flanders, the company’s chief executive. “You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it’s just passé at this juncture.”

Bristol Palin outraged over girls receiving free birth control

Bristol Palin took to her blog on Wednesday, Oct. 7, to voice her objection to a public health initiative in Washington that provides free birth control to young, low-income women.

"Do you remember what it was like to be a 10-year-old? I remember being an unabashed tomboy concerned with playing outside and acing 5th grade," the now-24-year-old wrote in the post. "But life isn't so innocent and carefree for some 10-year-olds in Washington State."

She went on to cite a report from conservative group Judicial Watch about the state's "Take Charge" Medicaid plan, which provides birth control, gynecological exams, and family planning education free of charge to eligible women, men, and teens.

The report claims "that some schools in Washington were giving free birth control implants to children as young as 10 years old!" Palin wrote. "These birth control devices are implanted in a girl's uterus, and all of this can be done without a parent's consent!"
In fact, according to a report from the nonprofit Guttmacher Institute — which aims to advance sexual and reproductive health worldwide — minors in a majority of states, including Washington, do not need parental consent for contraceptive services.
