It's On: Elizabeth Warren Vs Wall Street

Posted by Greg Sargent on December 12, 2012 at 3:17 pm

Republicans have long derided Elizabeth Warren for describing herself as an intellectual godmother of Occupy Wall Street. Now the intellectual godmother of Occupy Wall Street is occupying the Senate committee that oversees it.
The Senate Democratic leadership is announcing today that Warren will be given a seat on the Senate Banking Committee. As Forbes put it recently, Warren’s ascent to the Senate alone was “Wall Street’s worst nightmare.” This could make that nightmare a good deal worse.
Warren’s appointment to the Banking Committee was expected; Ryan Grim broke the news some time ago. But today’s announcement will make it official.

This is going to give Warren a choice perch from which to continue to press the crusade for Wall Street oversight and accountability.

The Obama Campaign's Real Heroes

Great Insight into the incredible campaign machine

By Tim Dickinson
December 7, 2012 1:45 PM ET

Now that the dust has settled and the vote totals are nearly certified, it's clear that the 2012 presidential election was never a squeaker. It was a landslide. Barack Obama beat Mitt Romney by more than 4.6 million votes nationwide, driving the Republican down to a karmic 47 percent of the popular vote.

Obama didn't win on merit alone. His high-tech, data-driven, socially-networked campaign was one for the history books, turning out key demographic blocks in astonishing numbers. Consider that in Ohio, the president's team drove the African-American share of the electorate to up to 15 percent, versus 11 percent in 2008. That's more than 200,000 new votes for the president in a state decided by a margin of 165,000. In other words: That was the ballgame.

President Obama owes his second term to a masterful campaign team – few of whom are household names. Here are ten heroes of the Obama 2012 team:

Republicans Skip Benghazi Hearings

Republicans skip Benghazi hearing; complain about lack of information on Benghazi
Posted By Josh Rogin Thursday, November 15, 2012 - 10:37 AM

This week, a number of Republican senators have strongly criticized the administration for failing to properly explain the circumstances surrounding the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi. Some of those senators failed to show up for a briefing on the attack Wednesday.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has been the leading congressional critic of the administration's handling of the Benghazi attack and what he sees as the administration's lack of candor with Congress on the matter. On Wednesday, he pledged to block the potential nomination of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice to replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton due to Rice's statements on the attack. That drew a sharp rebuke from President Barack Obama at Wednesday's press conference.

But although McCain had time to speak on the Senate floor and on television about the lack of information provided to Congress about the attack, he didn't attend the classified briefing for senators Wednesday given to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, of which he is a member.
Committee ranking Republican Susan Collins (R-ME) called out McCain for skipping the briefing and said his call for a special committee to investigate the Benghazi attack was not necessary because the Homeland Security committee could handle it.

Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), "who was there at briefing, and Senator McCain, who was not, are members of our committee, and I know they would play very important roles," Collins told Politico.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), another Homeland Security committee member who was on television complaining about the lack of Benghazi information, also did not show up for the Wednesday hearing. Paul did a CNN interview from the Capitol building Wednesday in which said he had questions about the anti-Islam video, the lack of Marines in Libya, and diplomatic security. At one point he says, "I don't know enough of the details."

The closed and classified briefing included representatives from the State Department, the Defense Department, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the National Counterterrorism Center, and the FBI, an administration official said. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a classified hearing on Benghazi on Tuesday and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence will hold one Thursday, but McCain and Paul are not members of either of those committees.
"If you want answers, a good first step is to show up and ask a question," an administration official told The Cable. "That's what a senator does."

NYT ID's 'Shirtless FBI Agent"

It's a guy with interesting counter-terrorism past named Frederick Humphries, who naturally is married and like everyone else knows Jill Kelley and her husband and has the hots for her. This is "passionate," "hard-charging," "obsessive" and "bulldog" guy who also leaked to Rep. Cantor in apparent effort to bring down Obama. (I found photo of him from a few years back at left, via Seattle Times, with this story. ) He also claims the shirtless photo was merely sent as a "joke."

IDF hits 20 Underground Long Range Rocket Sites in Gaza

The IDF(Israel Defense Forces) has in recent minutes struck over 20 underground rocket launchers belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad in an airstrike.

The airstrikes targeted long-range rockets in the possession of terror organizations, such as the fajr-5 and other rockets that are capable of striking Tel Aviv from Gaza.

IDF spokesman Yoav Mordechai said that Gaza is a "forward Iranian base," adding that the latest campaign of air strikes targeted most of the long-range offensive capabilities in the hands of Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

He added that columns of smoke were visible around Gaza.

Abramaoff,Occupy Wall Street Join Forces

Abramoff, Occupy Wall Street join forces on campaign finance reform
By Megan M. Wilson - 11/13/12 06:31 PM ET

A new group that includes former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and members of the Occupy Wall Street movement on Tuesday began gathering signatures on a petition calling for an overhaul of the campaign finance system.
Represent.US aims to gather 1 million signatures in support of the American Anti-Corruption Act, a legislative proposal drafted by former Federal Election Commission Chairman Trevor Potter.

Once they reach 1 million signatures, the group plans to ask lawmakers to sponsor the bill and introduce it in Congress.
The measure would limit campaign contributions across the board and require all donations to be disclosed to the public, among other reforms.
Theodore Roosevelt IV, a member of the group and the great-grandson of President Teddy Roosevelt, said the measure aims would put power back in the hands of voters.

"It is unconscionable, in our society, that Congress is held in such low esteem," he said. "[It is] materially important to re-establish the sovereignty of the American people."
Board members for Represent.US say they are developing a plan to challenge lawmakers who refuse to endorse their bill.
The organization, which is operates two non-profits, will accept donations to pursue its agenda — all of which will be fully disclosed.
