Daily Holidays August 31

We Love Memoirs Day We Love Memoirs was set up on 31st August 2013 by two memoir authors, Victoria Twead and Alan Parks, who wanted to create a place where memoir readers and authors could come together and chat. Victoria Twead is a New York Times bestselling author of “Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools” and the “Old Fools” series, while Alan Parks is the author of “Seriously Mum, What’s an Alpaca?” and the “Seriously Mum” series. Victoria and Alan were determined to foster a warm community and have always discouraged authors from pushing their own books at readers. The results have been astounding, and WLM has grown quickly. New friendships are formed every day, and WLM meet-ups across the globe have become common. Small wonder that the We Love Memoirs community – which can be found here – is often described as “the friendliest group on Facebook”. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/we-love-memoirs-day/

Trail Mix Day Trail mix is a high energy snack comprised of dried fruits, nuts and energy snacks, designed to keep you alert and energised when walking, hiking, and partaking in similar endurance and intense activities. Trail Mix Day is all about creating good trail mix and testing it out on the road. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/trail-mix-day/

Daily Holidays August 30

International Whale Shark Day The bunnies have got Easter sewn up and Christmas is all about Rudolph, so it’s only fair that everyone’s favourite fish, the whale shark, gets a bite at the cherry. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-whale-shark-day/

National Toasted Marshmallow Day Most people have fond memories of childhood, sat by a roaring campfire toasting marshmallows on wooden sticks… Yum! Toasted Marshmallow Day is a chance to re-live those memories, and for people who’ve never experienced toasting marshmallows to find out what all the fuss is about. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/toasted-marshmallow-day/

Slinky Day That little jingle has been heard by millions upon millions of people worldwide. Catchy, and with a toy that is a staple from our own childhoods, the Slink is a Toy Hall of Fame superstar. Sitting up there with the likes of Barbie, G.I. Joe and LEGO, this powerhouse of a toy has the humblest of beginnings. But even with those humble beginnings, it was more than enough to bring it to the attention of children worldwide, and later having Slinky Day to remember, and play with, those metal and plastic coils. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/slinky-day/

Grief Awareness Day Sometimes even the brightest of days can be dark when the difficulties of life rear their ugly heads. But there is a silver lining to this, there are those that are willing to help us through these darker days. This is all about looking at grief, and raising awareness both of how to cope with grief, and how to help others cope. So look around and offer that helping hand, lend an ear and join us on Grief Awareness Day to show those around us that we are here for them. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/grief-awareness-day/

More Herbs, Less Salt
Day Eating a healthy, balanced diet is often easier said than done – it takes thought, time and effort to prepare fresh and nutritious food, when less healthy options are often much easier and more convenient! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/more-herbs-less-salt-day/

Individual Rights Day In honor of John Locke, whose philosophical writings argued for the rights of each single human being, Individual Rights Day is celebrated on August 29th, the date of Locke’s birth. According to Locke, “Anything that a man has as a matter of human rights or civil rights is to remain inviolably his,” and although Locke conceded that humans surrendered some natural rights in exchange for the collective protection afforded by societies, he held that basic individual rights include life, liberty, property, freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom to petition government. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/individual-rights-day/

Pony Express Day Pony Express Day celebrates those brave souls who made up the unique mail delivery system of the same name. Back in the days of the wild west, there was no Fed Ex, no Postal Service that ran that far west, no planes, and delivery by ship was likely to take months if it ever got there at all. Seeing this need for a specialized delivery service, Leavenworth and Pike’s Peak Express Company took an opportunity to expand into this void. From this important decision was born one of the most iconic pieces of American History, whose influence is felt in hundreds of Pony Express Day Festivals throughout the American Midwest. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pony-express-day/

Race Your Mouse Around the Icons Day It’s almost unresistable – when your computer is slow to load, and when you’re waiting for something to happen, you can’t resist the urge to play with the mouse and the cursor. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/race-your-mouse-around-the-icons-day/

Radio Commercials Day Radio commercials are often seen as an irritation to be endured while waiting for some music to come on, but they have been part of the entertainment business for nearly a century and provide employment for many people. Radio Commercials Day commemorates the day when the very first radio commercial was broadcast on New York station, WEAF. This took place on August 28th 1922 and was for an American estate agent, Queensboro Realty. It wasn’t until 1973 that the UK had its first radio commercial, which ran on LBC and promoted Birds Eye frozen food. Many early radio commercials can be found online, and a great way to celebrate Radio Commercials Day is to listen to a few and be transported back in time. Alternatively, track down some radio commercials from around the world and be entertained by the huge variety of tone and style that are used in radio adverts from different countries. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/radio-commercials-day/

Bow Tie Day he bow tie has it’s origins, not in France like many think, but in Croatia. The French military forces had seen the way the Crotian soldiers tied the necktie in order to keep the collars of their shirts together during the Thirty Year War. After that, tobacco magnate Pierre Lorillard wore one to the Tuxedo Club, and his black and white fashion sense blossomed into becoming the Tuxedo we know currently in fashion. Typically the bow tie is worn as an accessory to accentuate the neck, helping draw eyes up to the face and away from the shoulders and chest. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bow-tie-day/

The Duchess Who Wasn't Day “The Duchess” Who Wasn’t Day celebrates the life of Margaret Wolfe Hungerford, an irish novelist who was always published under the pen name “The Duchess” in the United States – also the name of her most popular novel, published in 1887. Margaret is responsible for the popular phrase “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, in her book Molly Bawn, so try and slip it into conversation! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/the-duchess-who-wasnt-day/

Franchise Appreciation Day The grouping of businesses together under one banner to promote sales and make it cheaper to buy, and produce, the items or services that they do. While many people see a franchise as a whole lot of money, that is not always true. A franchise can have very little funds, as they are all tied together in making sure the franchise succeeds. This is a day to celebrate that camaraderie and maybe even embrace it deeper than usual with Franchise Appreciation Day! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/franchise-appreciation-day/

Whiskey Sour Day The Whisky Sour is a drink that has an excellent pedigree, with the first mention of being found in 1870 in a Wisconsin Newspaper. This drink has been a favorite of the world’s manliest men since its inception, being enjoyed by soldiers and officers alike. It’s somewhat strange that in recent years it has gained something of a reputation as a ‘girly drink’, but the contestation of which side of that line of machismo it falls on matters not when you’re enjoying this refreshing bit of historical liquor. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/whisky-sour-day/

Kiss & Make Up Day We all have fights with our nearest and dearest now and again. Whether a sibling dispute, a marital tiff, a spat with a best friend or a clash with the parents; whether it’s about a lie, a misunderstanding, relationships or the state of the kitchen, today it’s time to kiss and make up. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/kiss-and-make-up-day/

Burger Day Do you fancy yourself as a burger connoisseur? Then Burger Day is your excuse to indulge and to try new flavors and experiences! Burger Day is run by a Mr Hyde, who sample, test and revel in the delights (and doubtless horrors) of burger vendors. Why not join them and try a new burger venue, flavor or style in your city? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/burger-day/

International Strange Music Day was created by Patrick Grant, a New York City musician. The premise is simple: to get people to play and listen to types of music they have never experienced before. The ‘strange’ part can mean either unfamiliar or bizarre – the choice is entirely yours. Patrick believes broadening people’s musical spectrums can also change the way we look at other aspects of life – his mantra is ‘listening without prejudice’. This growing movement has concerts, a record label and strong support from summer schools, where it is appreciated as a great way to stimulate young minds. Have you ever wanted to combine a tight Wonder Woman costume, a frozen turkey drumstick and an inflatable wildebeest into a percussion concert? International Strange Music Day gives you the perfect excuse. What you do with these items once the music stops, of course, is your business… https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-strange-music-day/

Knife Day is the day to appreciate the knives that folk use on a daily basis. This day is a celebration of this marvellous tool that has been with humans since the dawn of time. The evolution of knives has been a remarkable feat – from knives made of bone, stone and flint, to modern creations using titanium, bronze, iron and steel. Nobody can deny the knife is one of man’s most useful tools – for cooking, eating, fishing, hunting, and not to forget the oh so handy Swiss Army knife. To make the most of Knife Day, why not test your knife chopping skills in the kitchen, or buy that knife set you’ve always wanted. Invite family and friends over to compare and swap knives, or get together to clean and sharpen your knives. Then there’s nothing like having a cake and enjoying a slice by the knife. And instead of wishing one another to have a nice day, why not just say: “Have a knife day!” https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/knife-day/

Pluto Demoted Day Many of us are fascinated by outer space and its many mysteries. Our own solar system went through a change in classification on 2006, when Pluto was demoted from a planet to a dwarf planet. Pluto Demoted Day now takes place every year to mark that very occasion. While sad for fans of the former ninth planet of the solar system, Pluto Demoted Day is an important day for our scientific history and is important to remember. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pluto-demoted-day/

Vesuvius Day The rumble and groaning of the earth as it starts to boil and roll. A cloud of dark ash that spread wherever the wind takes it. Bright, and extremely hot molten rock flowing down the hillside. These are just a few of the markers that explain a volcanic event, and none are large than the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This is in remembrance, of that very location, and the destruction that has been caused by Mount Vesuvius. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/vesuvius-day/

Citing voting rights, judge orders halt to school board elections in Ferguson-Florissant

Updated Aug. 22 with Sippel's ruling. — A federal judge has ruled that at-large elections for seats on the board for the Ferguson-Florissant School District violate the rights of African-American voters in the district.

Three-quarters of the students served by the Ferguson-Florissant School District are black, but African-Americans make up a minority of the voting-age population in the district's boundaries. In a ruling issued Monday, Judge Rodney Sippel agreed with the American Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP that those two facts mean the rights of African-American voters are violated.

"The fact that the electoral process in FFSD Board elections is not equally open to African Americans is most apparent in the stark levels of racially polarized voting seen in Board elections and the failure of white voters to support candidates from the African American community, which has essentially blocked African American voters from exercising effective political power in the District," Sippel wrote.

Sippel has blocked the district from holding future school board elections until the voting rights problem is solved. The next school board election was scheduled for April 2017. http://news.stlpublicradio.org/post/citing-voting-rights-judge-orders-halt-school-board-elections-ferguson-florissant

Cuban Sandwich Day Cuban Sandwich Day is a day to celebrate the traditional pressed Cuban sandwich and its many variants, which have spread from Tampa, Florida’s Ybor City neighborhood to restaurant menus in all corners of the world.
The Cuban sandwich is a history lesson pressed between two pieces of bread. Perhaps no other food represents the United States’ history as a melting pot at the turn of the century better than the Cubano, which combines elements from three different immigrant groups that came together, surprisingly, in the deep south. Also, it’s delicious? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cuban-sandwich-day/

Ride The Wind Day There’s no better feeling than the wind in your hair as you look out at a beautiful horizon. Ride the Wind Day is an excellent opportunity to marvel at all things flying, and perhaps take part in some flying yourself. Wind powers movement in many different ways, helping us travel through air and over water, as well as providing us with energy to use in our homes. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ride-the-wind-day/

Valentino Day Valentino Day commemorates the death of Rudolph Valentino (or Rudolfo Alfonzo Raffaelo Piero Filibert Guglielmi De Valentina D’Antonguolla), 1920’s film star of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, The Sheik, Blood and Sand, The Eagle and Son of the Sheik. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/valentino-day/
