This blossomed into the event known today, which is held each year to both honor grandparents and let them show their love for their grandchildren. National Chocolate Milkshake Day Dating from 1885, Chocolate Milk Shake Day celebrates a drink loved by old and young alike. Originally served in bars, a milk shake was an alcoholic concoction of whisky, eggs and cream. If the customer enjoyed the drink, he shook hands and tipped the barman. By 1900, the whisky was replaced with chocolate, vanilla or strawberry syrup. In 1922, a Wahlgreen’s employee added Horlick’s malted milk powder to the mixture and the first malted shake was born. When Steven Poplawski invented the electric blender in 1922, the texture of milkshakes changed from smooth, thick and creamy to the frothy airy consistency loved today.

Patriot Day falls on 11th September (also commonly known as ‘Nine-Eleven’) and is remembered globally as the anniversary of the catastrophic terrorist attacks on the USA of 11th September 2001.

Embedded in the memories of everyone who lived through it, this was the day four jet planes were hijacked and crashed into the New York World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, causing the deaths of 2,977 people. The fourth plane (United Airlines Flight 93) was directed at Washington DC, but its passengers bravely attempted to take back control and it crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The large majority of those lost after the attacks on the Twin Towers were working at or above the points of collision; thousands of people who had gone to work that morning like every other day, found themselves suddenly stranded at the top of a burning skyscraper. A number made the choice to jump from the flaming buildings rather than wait to be caught by the flames or for the building to collapse. No one could forget the terrifying and heartbreaking stories and images captured by the news footage of the day.

TV Dinner Day A new product, called “TV Dinners” was introduced by C.A. Swanson & Sons in 1953. This changed the prepackaged meal industry forever.

In 1962, Swanson stopped using the name “TV Dinner” however, in the United States, the term remains synonymous with any prepackaged dinner that is purchased frozen from a store and heated at home.

The first Swanson TV Dinner consisted of a Thanksgiving meal of turkey, cornbread dressing, peas and sweet potatoes. The original tray was made of aluminum and each food item had it’s own compartment. The dinner had to be heated in the oven and took about 25 minutes to cook. Today most frozen food trays are made of microwaveable safe material.

National Acorn Squash Day Even though considered a winter squash, acorn squash belongs to the same species as all summer squashes including zucchini and yellow crookneck squash.

The acorn squash that is dark green in color, often with a splotch of orange on it’s side or top, is the most common variety, however there are newer varieties including the Golden Acorn and the White Acorn. They can also be variegated in color.

The shape of the squash resembles that of it’s name, an acorn. They usually weigh between one to two pounds and are normally between four to seven inches long. Acorn squash is a hardy squash that can be saved and last throughout the winter, keeping for several months, when stored in a cool, dry location.
