National Peanut Day Did you know that peanuts have almost zero cholesterol? That’s just one of many reasons why peanuts are such a popular ingredient, snack and superfood!

Peanut Day is a chance to work some peanuts into your diet, used in any way from tasty lunchbox snacks to as a tangy stir-fry sauce. Watch out for allergies, though! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/peanut-day/

Grandparents Day The inspiration behind Grandparent’s Day was Marian McQuade. She instigated a campaign in the early 1970s aimed at highlighting the plight of lonely elderly people in care homes and encouraging grandchildren to take advantage of the wisdom and guidance their grandparents could provide. This blossomed into the event known today, which is held each year to both honor grandparents and let them show their love for their grandchildren. It also aims to continue Marian’s original idea of an older generation’s knowledge being passed on to youngsters.

There are plenty of ways to celebrate the day, with the official website providing plenty of ideas. This includes youngsters learning about their grandparent’s heritage and history or making family trees. Families can simply spend time together to listen to their elderly relative’s stories and youngsters can volunteer to spend part of the day with the elderly people at a nursing home. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/grandparents-day/

Fortune Cookie Day Add a little fun and excitement to your life by celebrating Fortune Cookie Day. These engaging biscuits always have a suitably general clairvoyant message inside which normally promises good health, luck or fortune to the recipient. It’s always nice to get an assurance of pleasant things to come, so a Fortune Cookie or two is just the thing to provide an intriguing and delightful break in the day.

There are numerous ways of marking Fortune Cookie Day. Perhaps the most obvious is to treat friends or family to a delicious Chinese meal, with the final course consisting of a plate of Fortune Cookies. Why not buy some Fortune Cookies as a pleasant surprise for colleagues or friends? If you’re watching you weight and worry about the calories in these snacks, you can always go online to find virtual Fortune Cookies which will give you your destiny without the added fat! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/fortune-cookie-day/

National Chocolate Milkshake Day Dating from 1885, Chocolate Milk Shake Day celebrates a drink loved by old and young alike. Originally served in bars, a milk shake was an alcoholic concoction of whisky, eggs and cream. If the customer enjoyed the drink, he shook hands and tipped the barman. By 1900, the whisky was replaced with chocolate, vanilla or strawberry syrup. In 1922, a Wahlgreen’s employee added Horlick’s malted milk powder to the mixture and the first malted shake was born. When Steven Poplawski invented the electric blender in 1922, the texture of milkshakes changed from smooth, thick and creamy to the frothy airy consistency loved today.

Celebrate this special day by going out with friends and family for chocolate shakes at a traditional soda fountain or check out recipes and blend some different chocolate shakes at home. And don’t forget the whipped cream! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/chocolate-milk-shake-day/

Video Games Day Video games represent one of the largest and fastest growing entertainment industries – from consoles and hardware, to games and accessories, and even to the music, artwork and dialogue in games, video games are a huge part of modern life. Video Games Day reminds us that video games are still a very new creation; if you’re a video game fan or a hardcore player, take a moment to be awed by the rate of progress – and if you’re not a video games person, why not take this day to give it a go? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/video-games-day/

Hot Cross Bun Day Whilst hot cross buns pre-date Christianity, they were historically only eaten on Good Friday as a Christian symbol of the crucifixion. However, they are now widely available and eaten throughout the year. Hot Cross Bun Day encourages you to consider the roots of the hot cross bun, and to take a day to enjoy hot cross buns. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hot-cross-bun-day/

Make Your Bed Day Make Your Bed Day – not to be confused with ‘Aww, Mom, do I have to?’ Day, which runs for 365 days in the year – aims to make everyone aware of the benefits of making the bed every morning.

Apparently, it’s a great boon to mental health and having a tidy sleep environment, according to sleep researchers, makes for more restful sleep. Starting the day with at least one ‘chore’ already done and dusted creates a more positive attitude and can help you take the rest of the day’s challenges in your stride.

As the bed is the focal point of the bedroom, when it’s made, the whole room looks tidier, and becomes more relaxing and less stressful as a result. So, rather than leaping out of bed and into the fray leaving behind a tangled mass of procrastination, use Make Your Bed Day to start a new habit. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/make-your-bed-day/

No News is Good News Day Take a break from the twenty-four hour news cycle on No News is Good News Day. Really, you can. Believe it or not, the world keeps turning even if you aren’t plugged into every crisis, disaster, scandal, and tragedy. A day can be fulfilling without being crammed full of tidbits of celebrity trivia or the daily misdeeds of the great and not-so-good.

Turn off the TV and radio, unhook from the web, and cancel the newspapers. If the weather really matters to you, look out of the window, and, be honest, when was the last time a traffic report actually turned out to be useful?

If it seems the news is always bad news, you can put that to rights on No News is Good News Day. The world isn’t all that bad when there’s no-one telling you how awful it all is! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/no-news-is-good-news-day/

Patriot Day falls on 11th September (also commonly known as ‘Nine-Eleven’) and is remembered globally as the anniversary of the catastrophic terrorist attacks on the USA of 11th September 2001.

Embedded in the memories of everyone who lived through it, this was the day four jet planes were hijacked and crashed into the New York World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, causing the deaths of 2,977 people. The fourth plane (United Airlines Flight 93) was directed at Washington DC, but its passengers bravely attempted to take back control and it crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The large majority of those lost after the attacks on the Twin Towers were working at or above the points of collision; thousands of people who had gone to work that morning like every other day, found themselves suddenly stranded at the top of a burning skyscraper. A number made the choice to jump from the flaming buildings rather than wait to be caught by the flames or for the building to collapse. No one could forget the terrifying and heartbreaking stories and images captured by the news footage of the day.

In the wake of the World Trade Center collisions, many brave men and women from the emergency services risked their lives to try to help rescue victims of the attacks, and of them 411 lost their own lives attempting to fight fires and rescue people. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/patriot-day/

TV Dinner Day A new product, called “TV Dinners” was introduced by C.A. Swanson & Sons in 1953. This changed the prepackaged meal industry forever.

In 1962, Swanson stopped using the name “TV Dinner” however, in the United States, the term remains synonymous with any prepackaged dinner that is purchased frozen from a store and heated at home.

The first Swanson TV Dinner consisted of a Thanksgiving meal of turkey, cornbread dressing, peas and sweet potatoes. The original tray was made of aluminum and each food item had it’s own compartment. The dinner had to be heated in the oven and took about 25 minutes to cook. Today most frozen food trays are made of microwaveable safe material.

The original product sold for 98 cents and the production estimate for the first year was 5,000 dinners. To their surprise, Swanson far exceeded that amount and in the first year, sold more than 10 million of them. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

Swap Ideas Day The exact origins of Swap Ideas Day are unknown. However, it is believed that the creator of this day is Robert Birch. This was not his only unusual idea as he is also thought to have invented several other strange celebrations including Lumpy Rug Day, Trivia Day and the bizarrely named Nothing Day.

The idea behind Swap Ideas Day is that everybody gets together to exchange ideas. People celebrate this occasion by connecting with other people to share thoughts and concepts. There are no rules outlining the nature of the ideas to be shared, thus making Swap Ideas Day an ideal opportunity for people to be as creative and wacky as they like with their ideas as well as learning from the ideas of others. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/swap-ideas-day/

Wonderful Weirdoes Day Nothing’s quite as dull as being normal, boring and average. Celebrate being weird, and celebrate the weirdos in your life on Wonderful Weirdos Day. Make an effort to be weird by dressing weirdly, doing weird things and encouraging weirdness with your friends and in the workplace! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/wonderful-weirdos-day/

Teddy Bear Day The teddy bear is one of the most popular toys for children, and holds a special place in many adults hearts, too. This lovable stuffed animal has a day all of its own, Teddy Bear Day. It gives a chance for people to get teddy out of the cupboard and make him the center of attention. It’s an ideal time to get together with others for a teddy bear’s favorite activity, having a picnic, as immortalized in the classic song, ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic.’ This was written in 1907, shortly after teddy bears were first manufactured in Europe and America. The American toy bears were named Teddy, in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, who had refused to shoot a small captured bear on a hunting trip. Many teddy bears have become famous over the years, including Paddington Bear, Rupert Bear, Pudsey Bear and, of course, Winnie the Pooh. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/teddy-bear-day/

International Literacy Day In an age of enlightenment, technology and modern living, it’s amazing that it’s estimated that nearly 800 million adults worldwide lack basic literacy skills.

Literacy Day aims to highlight the importance and value of literary education for individuals and groups, and for the wider global culture. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/literacy-day/

Pardon Day Forgiveness, the process by which an offended party chooses to change the way they feel about someone who has committed the offense against them. It bears a distinct difference from the idea of condoning (where one does not see the offense as wrong, and therefor not needing forgiveness), excusing the action (where you place the blame for the action on someone else entirely), giving pardon (cleared by a legal representative), forgetting (where the action no longer exists in memory in any real or present way), or the act of reconciliation (where the relationship is restored without the action strictly being forgiven). https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pardon-day/

Iguana Awareness Day What’s not to love about an aggressive, cold-blooded, reptile with nasty bite and a powerfully strong tail? Learn all about these cute critters and how to care for them on Iguana Awareness Day.

As with so many pets, not all new owners realise what they are committing to when they first take home their baby iguana. That little bundle of scales could one day grow to six feet in length. With very specific dietary needs and a rather reptilian personality, iguanas are said to be easy to love, but hard to care for.

Iguana Awareness Day is the ideal opportunity to learn about keeping your iguana tame and friendly, how to care for its health and personal grooming, and how to house it comfortably. With the proper care and attention, an iguana can be a wonderful and rewarding pet for many years. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/iguana-awareness-day/

World Physical Therapy Day The human body is remarkably easy to damage and break, and no more so than when participating in strenuous physical activity such as sporting or athletic activity.

Physical therapists work to undo damage, educate on healthy behaviour and to restore lost or damaged functionality. Physical Therapy Day, then, is dedicated to these professionals throughout the world, and aims to recognise their commitment to keeping us all fighting-fit. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/physical-therapy-day/

Labor Day Labor Day was celebrated for the first time in New York City in 1882. It was originally celebrated on September 5th, but was moved to the first Monday in September in 1884. Labor Day started out as a state holiday, getting voted in by individual states, but gained popularity and was voted a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

National Acorn Squash Day Even though considered a winter squash, acorn squash belongs to the same species as all summer squashes including zucchini and yellow crookneck squash.

The acorn squash that is dark green in color, often with a splotch of orange on it’s side or top, is the most common variety, however there are newer varieties including the Golden Acorn and the White Acorn. They can also be variegated in color.

The shape of the squash resembles that of it’s name, an acorn. They usually weigh between one to two pounds and are normally between four to seven inches long. Acorn squash is a hardy squash that can be saved and last throughout the winter, keeping for several months, when stored in a cool, dry location.

Prepared in different ways for consumption, the acorn squash can be baked, microwaved, sautéed or steamed. It is often prepared stuffed with rice, meat, cheeses or vegetable mixtures. The seeds of the squash can be toasted, eaten and enjoyed. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

Grandma Moses Day A renowned American folk artist, Grandma Moses first started painting in her 70?s.

Known to her family and friends as “Mother Moses” or “Grandma Moses” and actually she first exhibited using the name “Mrs. Moses”, the press eagerly dubbed her “Grandma Moses”, which stuck and stayed with her.

Anna Mary Robertson Moses (September 7, 1860 – December 13, 1961) is an example to us all of an individual who successfully began a career in the arts at an advanced age. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

Salami Day Salami is cured, fermented and air-dried sausage, popular in Italy and the mediterranean. Salami Day encourages you to explore the world of salami by trying new and adventurous types of salami, and enjoying salami with friends at salami-themed parties. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/salami-day/

Buy a Book Day TV and movies have taken over our lives these days. That’s not to say that watching certain TV shows or movies is a waste of our time—there are many well-made, thought-provoking things to be watched. And of course, thanks to Kindle, carrying even multiple books around at the same time has become infinitely easier and more practical. Still, however, it is a bit sad how the the old-fashioned art of reading a regular paper book seems to be slowly fading away into the past. It sometimes seems as though children today do not even know the scent of an old book, a book that has touched the lives of so many, and how wonderful it can be to settle down on the couch with such a book on a rainy day and disappear into the world it creates. Buy a Book Day was created for the purpose of reminding people how much joy simple black print on a white background can bring when it awakens your imagination and transports you far away. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/buy-a-book-day/

National Coffee Ice Cream Day If you are a coffee lover and a lover of ice cream, than this is the food holiday you look forward to every year. National Coffee Ice Cream Day is observed annually on September 6th.

This creamy and caffeinated ice cream treat is sure to satisfy your taste buds. There are those that are not a fan of cold coffee, however when it is whipped with cream and sugar, it takes on a magical taste of it’s own.

Coffee ice cream has been around for many years. In 1869, coffee ice cream was used in parfait and a recipe appeared in a 1919 cookbook for an Egg Coffee, consisting of cream, crushed ice and coffee syrup. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/latest-posts/

National Read a Book Day The first celebration of Read a Book Day was around the end of the first decade of the 2000’s and was almost certainly the idea of a librarian, probably one who was encouraging youngsters to read a book.

On Read a Book Day, it’s not compulsory to read a whole book but the day serves as inspiration to people to read a section of a book they particularly enjoyed, to read with children, to donate a book to a children’s school library, or to host a book reading party.

Although the day was probably thought of with print books in mind, e-books are equally suitable for celebrating Read a Book Day. The main goal is to encourage reading, as both fiction and non-fiction books open up huge unknown vistas to enquiring minds.

Taking the opportunity to enjoy some time out of the day to relax and read is good for the soul and the mind. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/read-a-book-day/

National Cheese Pizza Day Although we are all fond of piling toppings onto our favourite pizzas, the humble cheese pizza is celebrated with Cheese Pizza Day. It is estimated that there are more than 70,000 pizzerias across the United States, demonstrating how pizza has been adopted into the national psyche.

Bizarrely, pizza – especially a basic cheese pizza – was regarded by its Italian inventors as a food for the lower classes who could not afford the luxury of meats. The ingredients are cheap, requiring just flour, yeast and water to make a basic dough, with toppings often being picked from local trees and made from local milk.

Whether you’re a fan of a deep dish from Chicago, or prefer the more authentic Italian thin base pizza, now you have an excuse to indulge! If you really want to spoil yourself, head down to Pizza Luis XIII restaurant in Salerno, Italy, where the world’s most expensive pizza has been created – costing $12,0000! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cheese-pizza-day/

Be Late For Something Day Modern living and society puts incredible pressures on us to meet challenging deadlines, observe rules and regulations, and to regulate our lives by tight schedules. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just stop for a little bit and see what happens?

Be Late For Something Day encourages you to take a step back from your schedule and intentionally be late for something – remember that things can go on without you, and maybe it’s not all quite as important as you thought; after all, you need some ‘me time’!

International Day of Charity Every year, charities all over the world help to save and improve people’s lives, fighting disease, protecting children, and giving hope to many thousands of people. To honour the important work that these many charities do, in 2012 the United Nations decided to nominate an annual International Day of Charity as an official day of recognition and celebration. The reason the date was chosen is because it is the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. This choice commemorates the tireless work that Mother Teresa did by devoting her whole life to charity work. To celebrate this special day every year, the work of different charities all over the word is publicised and celebrated, and people are encouraged to donate money and time, to carry out charitable works, and also to educate people and raise awareness about the many charitable issues worldwide. Education and giving are the essence of this special day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-day-of-charity/

Newspaper Carrier Day Newspaper Carrier Day celebrates the life and hiring date of Barney Flaherty, who was the first newspaper carrier (or paperboy), hired in 1833 by Benjamin Day, who was the publisher of the New York Sun newspaper at the time. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/newspaper-carrier-day/

Lazy Mom's Day Whether you are a lazy mom, or just aspire to have a day off and become a lazy mom, Lazy Mom’s Day could be right up your street. Even on Mother’s Day, moms across the world cook, clean, and generally work hard to keep their households functioning. On Lazy Mom’s Day, moms are encouraged to relax, take a back seat, and simply be lazy.

How can moms be lazy? Get the kids to bring you breakfast in bed, rather than making their toast and porridge in the morning. Get your husband to drive you to work, or make the kids take the bus to school rather than drop them off at the gates. Best of all – order in a pizza and have a night off from cooking!

Kids, if you are reading this, encourage your mom to take a day off. No need to buy her a present – some peace and quiet will be enough. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/lazy-moms-day/

Bring Your Manners to Work Day Many of us spend more time at work than at home, so it’s really important to have fulfilling relationships both with colleagues and customers. Bring Your Manners To Work Day was created by The Protocol School of Washington to remind people of the importance of treating people with courtesy and respect in the workplace. Everyone should practice good manners, whether at work or at home, and common bad manners at work include things like loud ringtones, not cleaning up after yourself and polite conversation.

Although Bring Your Manners To Work Day is just one day of the year, it doesn’t mean you should only be polite at work for one day. Use the day as a reminder of the importance of good manners every day of the year, and you may well find good manners help to open the doors to new opportunities in the workplace.
