Sen. Casey calls for more gun control and ban on hate crime convicts owning firearms.

After Orlando, Sen. Casey calls for more gun control and ban on hate crime convicts owning firearms

Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) was in Pittsburgh on Monday where he introduced legislation aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of those who commit criminal acts based on hate, his office said in a statement. This after a gunman pledging allegiance to the Islamic State killed 50 in an Orlando nightclub favored by the LGBT community there a day earlier.

According to Casey's office, his "Hate Crimes Prevention Act" would prohibit the purchase, possession or shipment of a firearm by anyone convicted of a misdemeanor hate crime or who received a hate crime sentence enhancement, and would prohibit the sale of firearms to anyone reasonably suspected to be guilty of a misdemeanor hate crime.

Casey also called for other actions to prevent gun violence, including a ban on military-style weapons, limits on clips and magazine sizes, a ban on those on the terrorist watchlist from purchasing firearms and universal background checks.

Thanks for posting this.

I have been following the development of these devices for awhile. Last I heard (maybe a year ago), it would be 6 years for a human-use approved prototype. There are actually several devices in different stages of development. Fortunately, they now seem to be on track for quicker results! These still look cumbersome, but are a million times better than the stationary dialysis machines. TG for the dedicated researchers working to improve the lives of kidney patients.

I wonder if the clerks will have to be 21, especially in gas stations.

Does anyone know?

I am not in favor of making alcohol more readily accessible to drivers. I see too many beer cans tossed along our country roads now. And there is this:

Yet across Pennsylvania - where someone dies every day on average from a DUI accident - police, prosecutors, and judges are failing to curb repeat drunk drivers like Lawless.

Get arrested for DUI in Pennsylvania, and you're more likely to wind up back on the road drunk than in most other states. A March study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that across the country, about one in every four people who were convicted for drunken driving was a repeat offender.

In Pennsylvania, that rate is nearly half, based on an Inquirer analysis of figures PennDot provided, making it one of the worst rates of the 22 states the feds compared.

I also wonder what the reaction of the PSP is. This seems more political than fiscal to me.

I have the same memories as others of my generation.

I loved science and wanted to be a veterinarian. When I was in 10th grade, I had straight A's, including honors math and science. I applied for a summer science camp and my rejection letter said, "Sorry, but we don't accept girls." Kind of like Hillary's inquiry about becoming an astronaut!

I followed the usual path and became a teacher, which was one of the few opportunities for college-educated women in the 1960s. College was a very male-dominated and oriented environment. Girls were still considered "coeds" and it was pitiful to not be engaged and planning a wedding your senior year!

When I was teaching, we had to wear skirts, pantyhose and heels. No slacks, no open-toed shoes. I had to go on a year-long maternity leave, but didn't lose my job, just my seniority. Our union finally got a little nerve and fought for us to wear pants-suits. Had to be a matching set!

Life is so much better for young women today. Hope they appreciate what we and our fore-mothers and sisters went through!

As I was watching it, I was thinking.....

Good luck, Senator! He actually thinks he can help trump become more "presidential"! I am pretty sure that trump does not accept help graciously nor does he admit to having any shortcomings.
Didn't Ryan try to "educate" him, too? How did that work out?

Nice memory!

Girls didn't play sports when I was a young girl, but I remember winning a poster contest in 5th grade. The theme was "Look Both Ways Before Crossing". I went to an awards dinner with my 5th grade teacher, but I can't remember if there were any other prizes.

One-on-one would be great! Your grandson will probably enjoy it.

I had huge classes and thought this would be a good activity because it involved thinking skills and not a lot of messy materials. I would try to do it in groups, putting a capable student "in charge" of the ones who were all thumbs! Everyone seemed to enjoy the jumping frog at least! LOL

I always had a "dream" of doing a thousand cranes, but I was daunted. I love doing it myself, though!
