Rise Up New York! Smash Austerity! Support Workers Organizing!

https://www.facebook.com/events/426541807412950/

[When]

Thursday, December 6, 2012

[Time]

5:00pm in EST

[Where]

7th Ave & W 42nd St New York, NY 10036

[Description]

Mass Rally at Thursday 5PM Times Square!
Direct Actions and Marches to Follow

Last week, 200 workers at Wendy's, McDonald's, Burger King, Domino's and Taco Bell went on strike and joined workers at Car Washes, Supermarkets, and Airports throughout NYC in demanding better pay working conditions.

On December 6th we’re standing up to protect the right to organize!

Too many low wage workers rely on public assistance to get by in our economy. While workers throughout the city are making near or below minimum wage or are fighting to protect their wages and benefits, CEOs are making record incomes and their lobbyists are push our elected officials to cut spending on social programs and extend tax cuts for the richest 2%.

We won't stand for this. We won't stand policies that prioritize tax cuts for millionaires over funding programs that working families rely on. And we are telling workers who are struggling at work that we've got their back.

Stand with workers as they come together to demand better wages and working conditions and economic policy that’s good for all of us.

LOS ANGELES HOMEOWNERS ANNOUNCE UNITED FRONT AGAINST BANKS ON 1 YR ANNIVERSARY OF “OCCUPY OUR HOMES”

Los Angeles City Hall - Southern California homeowners who are defending their homes from banks will assemble on the Los Angeles City Hall lawn on the 1 year anniversary of Occupy Our Homes to announce that homeowners throughout the greater Los Angeles area will be uniting together to fight wrongful foreclosure. It has been over 100 days since the Hernandez family of Van Nuys was scheduled to be evicted by Bank of America. They remain in their house after choosing to barricade and defend their home with the support of their community and the Occupy movement. For the Perez family of Anaheim, it took 45 days of negotiations to receive a fair loan modification and save their home. In East LA, Margarita Lucero reached out to Occupy Fights Foreclosures after seeing first the Perez family and then the Hernandez family on the news. The Luceros have defied the odds and stayed in their home 55 days past their eviction date. Last year in California, 1.2 million homes were foreclosed on and another million homes to be vacated by the end of 2012. There are many other homeowners fighting banks, like Richard Castalto, who are and letting the public know that they have been successful where the courts and elected officials have failed: by occupying together.

“This is about showing resistance, not just to the banks, but to the system entirely, because the politicians, the lobbyists, the banks, the courts, the LAPD, the sheriffs, are all working together on this big scheme to defraud everybody of their right to housing. This is about making a stand for the millions of homes that have already been lost. This is a stand, an action after the fact, but it's also for the ones that are going to continue to be lost, for the jobs that have been lost, for the jobs that will continue to be lost, for the homeless people who are out on the streets when we have empty homes.”

-Ulises Hernandez of #FuerzaHernandez

Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach idled for fifth day (Updated)

http://news.yahoo.com/ports-los-angeles-long-beach-idled-fifth-day-053126575.html

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A strike by clerical workers at the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach idled most of the busiest U.S. cargo shipping complex for a fifth day on Saturday as container-laden vessels waited to be unloaded and marathon contract talks stretched into the night.

Some 10,000 members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63 were refusing to cross picket lines of some 500 striking clerical workers, effectively shutting down 10 of the two ports' combined 14 container terminals.

Four other container terminals have remained open, along with facilities for handling break-bulk cargo such as raw steel and tanker traffic.

Los Angeles port strike triggers fears, lobbying by businesses

http://news.yahoo.com/los-angeles-port-strike-triggers-fears-lobbying-businesses-025151606.html

(Reuters) - A national coalition of U.S. business groups is urging an end to a strike at the twin California ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach amid fears that a prolonged stand-off will cost the American economy many billions of dollars, and could even spread to the east coast.

Trade groups led by the National Retail Federation have sent letters to U.S. President Barack Obama and leading members of Congress asking them to intervene and help end the strike at America's two busiest container harbor facilities. Those industry groups say the strike, which entered its sixth day on Sunday, is already costing $1 billion a day.

The labor dispute has been triggered by 500 clerical workers at the ports, members of the relatively small Office of Clerical Union Workers. Their industrial action and clout has been significantly strengthened because some 10,000 members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union have supported them, refusing to cross the clerical workers' picket lines.

Israel broke the cease-fire/truce today; Mexico protests the government.

My internet connection was shot today; attempted to post some links and tweets and pics but it's obviously failed to come through. Sorry. Wanted it to be known that the insane israeli government are trolling Gaza, still seeking one of the wars they so desperately want, and US media won't care that the israeli government started it if things flare up. You heard it here.

Update: Three protesters are said to have been killed by riot police in Mexico thus far.

Many photos of the Mexican protests; warning: There is one photo of a man killed by police. Not for the squeamish. Seriously.

Clashes took place just before Kardashian opened the Bahrain branch Millions of Milkshakes shop

http://news.yahoo.com/tear-gas-milkshakes-kim-kardashian-gets-angry-reception-185811501.html

MANAMA, Bahrain - Just hours after reality TV star Kim Kardashian gushed about her impressions of Bahrain, riot police fired tear gas to disperse more than 50 hardline Islamic protesters denouncing her presence in the Gulf kingdom.

The clashes took place just before Kardashian opened the Bahrain branch of her Millions of Milkshakes shop.

An Associated Press journalist saw protesters chanting "God is Great" near the shopping complex in Riffa, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of the capital Manama. The demonstrators were cleared before Kardashian appeared late Saturday.

Dec. 6, 2011: My Occupy LA Arrest, by Patrick Meighan

This writer for Family Guy was among the 292 who one year ago tonight, faced 1,400 LAPD riot police and a "mayor" who later called chalking with water-soluble children's sidewalk chalk, "criminal behavior". Here is his story, because as in most instances, police worked hard to limit the amount of press involved. Special thanks to Spencer Mills, "OakFoSho" who got in to livestream, and PunkboyInSF who also came down to livestream.

What you are about to read is not pretty.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — After months of high-profile fundraising that drew celebrities’ attention and dollars, a group of Native American tribes has raised $9 million to buy a piece of land in South Dakota’s Black Hills that they consider sacred, an official with an Indian land foundation said Friday.

The Indian Land Tenure Foundation president Cris Stainbrook told The Associated Press that the tribes raised enough money to purchase the land from its current owners. The foundation was one of several groups and organizations leading the effort to buy the land.

Stainbrook said the deal should be finalized yet Friday, which was the deadline for the tribes to raise the money.
