The Arab world in a humanitarian effort could have easily taken in the women and children of Gaza as refugees. They have the money and the resources as well as the world Red Cross. Why didn’t they? They had 3 weeks never heeded the warnings. The sick and infirm, the elderly all could have been saved. Why? Why didn’t they? Only to cry outrage now!

We have to get through. I hope all sane people have not left

Twitter as that is the only place that still is a town square. Musk has done all he can to alienate liberals but hopefully the people still there can get through to Trump's base. Liberals can't write it off. At least not this election.

This just proves improving mental health checks and getting warnings of plans for violence are

useless unless you take the AR 15 out of the equation. Warnings are almost useless.

Police across Maine were alerted just last month to “veiled threats” by the U.S. Army reservist who would go on to carry out the worst mass shooting in the state’s history, one of a string of missed red flags that preceded the massacre.

Two local law enforcement chiefs told The Associated Press that a statewide awareness alert was sent in mid-September to be on the lookout for Robert Card after the firearms instructor made threats against his base and fellow soldiers. But after stepped-up patrols of the base and a visit to Card’s home – neither of which turned up any sign of him – they moved on.

“We added extra patrols, we did that for about two weeks. ... The guy never showed up,” said Jack Clements, the police chief in Saco, home to the U.S. Army Reserve base where Card trained.

Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry, whose jurisdiction includes Card’s home in Bowdoin, said the Army Reserve tipped his department in September to the reservist’s threats, and the sheriff sent the awareness alert to every law enforcement agency in the state after his deputy came back empty-handed from a welfare check to Card’s home.

Was Jesus for Democracy? Wasn't it empires and kingdoms

in the Bible? I know Jesus taught the values of civil society in the Bible. Is this new Speaker of the House for civi society? It is the very basis of Democracy. Republicans seem not to be for civil society because it competes with their religion or their MAGA cult. I've had many religious people in my life and they were/are the most civil society people. They believed/believe in a God of love. And walking the walk. Where does this guy think he is going by persecuting people not exactly like him.

“Before arriving in Washington less than a decade ago, House Speaker Mike Johnson, a deeply religious Christian, was a legal crusader associated with a fringe evangelical movement called ‘young Earth creationism,’ based on a literal reading of the Bible’s Book of Genesis that posits the Earth is only several thousand years old,” the HuffPost reports.

Bonus Quote of the Day
October 26, 2023 at 10:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 11 Comments

“Someone asked me today in the media, ‘People are curious, what does Mike Johnson think about any issue?’ I said, ‘Well, go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it. That’s my worldview.”

— Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), on Fox News.

So no social programs or rights that did not exist after the year 0001 AD? That's not what Jesus wants. He believed in helping the sick and the poor. How does this guy feel about Obamacare? Social Security? Does anybody know his positions on these issues? Does he do what real Jesus would? Does he believe in Democracy or only empires and monarchy for the USA?

AND THE ANSWER IS:

Paul Krugman:

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/26/opinion/mike-johnson-republican-party.html

Until his sudden elevation to speaker, Johnson was a relatively little-known figure. But he did serve for a time as chairman of the Republican Study Committee, a group that devises policy proposals. And now that Johnson has become the face of his party, people really should look at the budget proposal the committee released for 2020 under his chairmanship.

For if you read that proposal carefully, getting past the often mealy-mouthed language, you realize that it calls for the evisceration of the U.S. social safety net — not just programs for the poor, but also policies that form the bedrock of financial stability for the American middle class.

Start with Social Security, where the budget calls for raising the retirement age — already set to rise to 67 — to 69 or 70, with possible further increases as life expectancy rises.

On the surface, this might sound plausible. Until Covid produced a huge drop, average U.S. life expectancy at age 65 was steadily rising over time. But there is a huge and growing gap between the number of years affluent Americans can expect to live and life expectancy for lower-income groups, including not just the poor but also much of the working class. So raising the retirement age would fall hard on less fortunate Americans — precisely the people who depend most on Social Security.

The Economist says the pandemic has “broken” people’s perceptions about the economy.

“Although Americans report being worried about their finances, they are behaving as flush as ever—and in economic forecasting, actions speak louder than words. When used to project future spending rather than consumer sentiment, the same battery of economic variables has fully maintained its forecasting power since 2020. In contrast, since Covid began, the correlation between sentiment and both current and future spending has vanished.”

Jonathan Last: “I hear every person who says that times are tough for them and I honor and respect that. But in the aggregate, people’s views are not just a little bit off. They are wildly out of sync with reality.”

Is anybody else 'frequency hopping' on the GAZA War?

I am empathize with everyone except Hamaz. I can't get to a big picture on what should happen. I limit my time watching or hearing about the horror. I am so mad at Hamaz for cannibalizing GAZA and the Palestinian people there going on 17 years. Obviously I think it is henious what they did on the 7th to Israelis that is ongoing with the hostages. And for cannibalizing Palestinians again by using them as human shields as they are doing now. One would think if the Israelis could go into the tunnels slowly they could starve out Hamaz? Less need for bombing of Gaza City?
