An L.A. hospital just turned the GIFT SHOP into an ICU unit.

Think about this, folks: An L.A. hospital just turned the GIFT SHOP into an ICU unit. That's how bad it is.

Not too soon to call it - Trump completely botched the vaccine roll out/distribution plan

Josh Marshall

Not too soon to call it. Trump completely botched the vaccine roll out/distribution plan - the only part of the vaccine effort he and his team had any real control or impact on. It's not even a botched plan. They just didn't make a plan. Now Biden will have to clean up the mess.

At current rate of vaccinations, it will take USA 10 years to inoculate 80% of Americans

At the current rate of #covid19 vaccinations, it will take the U.S. 10 years to inoculate 80% of Americans.

Instead of obfuscating & deflecting responsibility, the federal government needs to take 3 urgent steps.

I know ramping up a complex operation is hard. It's possible 2 million is an undercount.

What concerns me most is that officials are backtracking on their promises. It's giving me flashbacks to the testing debacle (remember "everyone who wants a test can get one&quot ? (2/6)

So what can be done? 3 things.

1) Set up a real-time public dashboard to hold the right officials responsible and to target additional resources to where are most needed. (3/6)

2) Publicize the plan for how vaccinations will be scaled up from 1 million a week to 3.5 million a day (which is what we need to get to 80% within 6 months).

We need to see a national strategy that sets ambitious but realistic goals. (4/6)

3) Acknowledge the challenges and end the defensiveness.

The public will understand if initial goals need to be revised, but there must be willingness to learn from missteps and immediately course-correct. (5/6)

I remain optimistic that vaccines will one day end this horrific #covid19 pandemic that has taken far too many lives. To get there, we must approach the next several months with urgency, transparency and humility. (6/6)

Sen Murphy: "52 Senate Republicans are only thing standing in way of $2,000 being sent to neediest"

&feature=emb_logo

Murphy went on to say that the 600 billionaires who live in America lost nothing during the pandemic. "They got richer," he said, adding that they "collectively added $1 trillion to their bank accounts."

"You know what's a smaller number than 600?" Murphy asked. "...There are 52 Republicans in this chamber -- 52 people who are going to have a decision to make about what to do in a country where millions are literally starving as we speak, while 600 billionaires count the $1 trillion of additional wealth they have accumulated during this period of national climate."

"...right now, 52 Senate Republicans serving in this chamber are the only thing standing in the way of $2,000 being sent to 160 million of our neediest citizens."

"Spare me the fake righteous indignation about the deficit all of a sudden," the senator added. "Three years ago these same deficit hawk Republicans passed a tax cut bill that before the pandemic hit had already added over $200 billion to the annual deficit, and that was a tax cut where 80% of the benefits went to the richest 1% of Americans."

USA! Aging hospital pipes breaking down due to huge amounts of oxygen needed

One of the myriad challenges facing Southern California’s medical system, which is overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients, involves one of the most basic staples of any hospital.

Oxygen.

Officials are having problems getting the amount of oxygen needed by critically ill COVID-19 patients who are struggling to breathe as their inflamed lungs are being damaged or destroyed.

........

It’s not simply a shortage of oxygen itself, county and hospital officials say. There’s a shortage of canisters, which patients need to return home, and aging hospital pipes are breaking down due to the huge amounts of oxygen needed to be distributed around the hospital.

There are two problems with the distribution of oxygen at aging hospitals.

First, there are so many patients needing a high rate of oxygen that the system cannot maintain the sufficient pressure needed in the pipes.

The second is that there is such high flow through the pipes that they freeze, “and obviously, if it freezes, then you can’t have good flow of oxygen,” said Dr. Christina Ghaly, L.A. County health services director.
