Poll: 9 In 10 Americans Support Background Check For All Gun Sales
by EYDER PERALTA
February 07, 201312:16 PM

A new Quinnipiac University poll finds Americans overwhelmingly support background checks on all gun sales.

The poll found that 92 percent of Americans support the checks, while 7 percent oppose them.

Quinnipiac also found that 52 percent support stricter gun laws and 56 percent support "a ban on the sale of assault weapons."

Quinnipiac's Assistant Director Peter Brown explains:
"'There is no significant voter opposition to requiring background checks for gun buyers,' said Brown, 'and there is support for banning high volume ammunition clips and assault weapons, with the issue pretty much falling along party lines.

Well Lookie Here: "Nearly Every Voter (92%) Supports Universal Gun Background Checks"-Only 7% Oppose

Nearly Every Voter Supports Universal Gun Background Checks
By: Jon Walker Thursday February 7, 2013 8:20 am

There are more Americans who claim to have personally seen a UFO (11%) than oppose background checks.

To say that support for universal background checks for gun sales is overwhelming would be an understatement. A new Quinnipiac poll shows that almost every registered voter backs the policy change.

According to the poll, 92 percent of voters nationwide support background checks for all gun buyers, only 7 percent oppose background checks. I cannot think of a single issue in any political polling that has ever been so one-sided.

Just to show how incredibly fringe the opposition to universal background checks is I went looking for things that poll higher. For example more Americans don’t believe President Obama was born in the United States (17%) than oppose background checks. Twice as many Americans think the Sun revolves around the Earth (18%) as oppose background checks. There are even more Americans who claim to have personally seen a UFO (11%) than oppose background checks.

Nearly every regular American supports this commonsense reform. It may be one of the least controversial ideas proposed in decades. The fact that there is a real chance Congress may not approve it shows how unbelievably powerful the gun manufacturer lobby is.

POLITICAL MEMO
New Rove Effort Has G.O.P. Aflame
By JEFF ZELENY

David N. Bossie, president of the conservative group Citizens United, wrote a piece on the Big Government Web site that declared, “The Civil War Has Begun.”

“This battle will be a long, hard slog against the establishment,” Mr. Bossie wrote, comparing the party’s conflict to the Battles of Lexington and Concord.

The testiness became personal on Wednesday when Mr. Bossie and the leaders of two dozen conservative groups released a letter to American Crossroads calling for the dismissal of its spokesman, Jonathan Collegio, because he called the veteran conservative activist Brent Bozell “a hater” in a radio interview.

“You obviously mean to have a war with conservatives and the Tea Party,” the letter said. “Let it start here.”

Newton Mother: "Let Them See What They've Done"

“Let them see what they’ve done.” -- Jacqueline Kennedy.

“I want the world to see what they did to my baby." -- Emmet Till's mother.

“I owed it to him as his mother, the good, the bad and the ugly." -- Noah Pozner's Mother.

Noah's Brave Mother:

Parents of the dead children were advised to identify them from photographs, such was the carnage. But every parent reacts differently. Veronique Pozner did the most difficult thing. She asked to see the body.

Reporter Zeveloff asked her why.

"I owed it to him as his mother, the good, the bad and the ugly,” she said. “. . . And as a little boy, you have to go in the ground. If I am going to shut my eyes to that I am not his mother. I had to bear it. I had to do it.”

When the governor of Connecticut arrived, she brought him to see Noah in the open casket. “If there is ever a piece of legislation that comes across his desk, I needed it to be real for him.” The governor wept.

Politico buries the lede in their story about the Republican Party and Fox News

Politico buries the lede in their story about the Republican Party and Fox News attempt at reinvention in a kinder, softer mold. There are two things that stand in the way:

But a senior Republican operative said the party has two huge, unresolved impediments to the top leaders’ grand plans: “suicide conservatives, who would rather lose elections than win seats with moderates,” and the “many groups on the hard right that depend on direct mail fundraising that requires a high degree of audacity, and borderline shrillness.”

Confessed shooter planned to use Chick-fil-A sandwiches as political statement

A man who confessed to the shooting of a security guard at the Washington offices of the conservative Family Research Council (FRC) pleaded guilty of the crime Wednesday, explaining in court that he brought a backpack full of Chick-fil-A sandwiches with the intent of making the attack into a political statement.

Floyd Corkins, 28, agreed to plead guilty to three charges relating to the Aug. 15 incident, including committing an act of terrorism, according to CBS News. His victim, security guard Leo Johnson, was shot once in the arm but managed to wrest away Corkins’ weapon.

In a strange twist, Corkins was caught on camera buying a pistol in Virginia, six days before the shooting, as a team of French journalists were filming a segment about how easy it is to buy guns in America. U.S. Attorney Ron Machen later declared in a prepared statement that the case “highlights the dangers of access to high-capacity magazines that allow killers to inflict carnage on a mass scale in the blink of an eye.”

The Chick-fil-A restaurant chain was embroiled in controversy the month before Corkins’ attack after CEO Dan Cathy told a religious news outfit that he’s “guilty” of using the company’s profits to finance anti-gay groups — a move that dealt tremendous damage to the business’s brand despite soaring sales as Christian groups flocked to eat chicken as a political statement.

What Is Wrong With US? Pastor apologizes for praying alongside Muslims, Jews at Newtown vigil

A pastor in Connecticut has apologized for taking part in a vigil for the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School because his church does not allow worshiping with other faiths.

Rev. Rob Morris of Newtown’s Christ the King Lutheran Church offered a letter of apology after he was reprimanded by church president Matthew Harrison for “joint worship with other religions,” according to the Religion News Service.

King Lutheran Church is a member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, which bans ministers from praying alongside Muslims, Jews or even other Christians.

Morris had provided the closing benediction at the Dec. 16 vigil in Newtown.

So, now in America we can no longer pray together?
