Salt Lake Tribune Editorial Board: Our nation is operating concentration camps for refugee children

Yes, we do have concentration camps.

They are not work camps. They are not death camps. At least, not on purpose. Our government is not building massive gas chambers and industrial crematoria. It is not conducting sick medical experiments on members of an unfavored class.

But that does not mean that the places into which we are herding tens of thousands of migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers are not properly called concentration camps. Because that is precisely what they are.

............

It worked its way up, from nasty political speeches (check) to politicians seeking and gaining power with promises to protect the purity of the nation from foreign invasion (check) to denying basic human rights and decency to people of an unfavored class (check).

............

Our nation is operating concentration camps for refugee children. We need to stop denying that and decide if we are comfortable with that fact. And how we will explain it to our children.

Children, including infants, are being held in a filthy border station. Their clothes are soiled with mucus, feces and breast milk. No soap. No toothbrushes. Not enough food. Even the guards are wearing masks.

Trumpster: "Quit trying to make us feel teary-eyed for the children. Yes, I love children...but..."

What some Trump supporters think of family separations at the border:

"To be perfectly honest, I'm angry at the parents," she said. "I feel very honestly that it's their fault that the children have been separated, because they're bringing them in illegally. And the other thing is, the law that has been put on the books was not put on recently. It was put on back many years ago, and I think very seriously that they need very firmly to say enough is enough."

She faulted the media for using children to play on people's emotions.

"I think people need to stop constantly bringing up the poor children, the poor children. The parents are the problems. They're the ones coming in illegally," she said. "Quit trying to make us feel teary-eyed for the children. Yes, I love children a great deal, but to me, it's up to the parents to do things rightfully and legally."

Iranian views from the street: Trump playing 'childish dare game'

"My job is to run a shop and I'm not an educated person. But what I see is that Trump is a crazy person. I swear to God he is crazy. He needs to be confronted," the 50-year-old told Al Jazeera on Friday.

Since the start of Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign, much has changed for Iran's middle class; costs of doing business and living expenses have skyrocketed. The sanctions, including those aiming to bring Iran's vital oil exports to zero, have led to a nearly 60 percent drop in the value of Iran's currency, the rial.

The economic crisis has taken its toll on Eliasi's business, too. Now, he says, his earnings cover the costs of his shop alone and he hardly makes enough money to take care of his family, including his 10-year-old daughter, Bahar, present at the shop to help her father.

"If they come and give us a couple of slaps in the face, am I supposed to just stand there and watch?" Eliasi asks rhetorically.
