Gee, I've looked and looked and looked through them-thar Beatitudes

since the fundies love thumpin' that bible of theirs - but for the life of me, I CANNOT find a SINGLE WORD from Our Lord Jesus Christ that EVER said, or inferred - "Blessed are the war-makers."

Still can't find the damn thing... It's GOTTA be there somewhere! Cuz them fundies love their war crap SO bad, and Gawd is on THEIR side! They KNOW the mind of God. They just DO!

Well, that's what they tell us all the time...

Fear 'n' Smear.

Same old shit. Piled higher and deeper.

Sorry pal, YOUR religion does not trump MY rights. Nor anybody else's rights. Nobody's trying to take your churches away - OR your tax-exempt status.

Actually, that's a shame. We SHOULD be taking the tax-exempt status away from "churches" like this one that do little else but politicking, trying to dictate their narrow, mean-spirited, exclusionary, and deeply-prejudicial brand of morality, and meddling in public affairs and governance. Or at least we should be revisiting it.

Thank God cooler heads have prevailed.

And yeah, it was a JFK line. One of many memorable ones. WELL worth repeating!

Welcome to DU, ChiefJusticeIV!

Glad you're here! bibi's been the boy who cried wolf for about, what? 25 years now? He was yowling that Iran was on the verge of getting nukes in five years - more than two decades ago. They still don't have 'em. But he's just like our wrong-wingers. Use Fear 'n' Smear. Hope you scare the gullible, unsuspecting, too-trusting voters out there and that'll make 'em do whatever you want.

I STILL don't understand why turning down the heat in the Middle East is somehow not a good thing for Israel. Just don't get it. Seems to me it's a GREAT idea and beneficial for EVERYBODY in the Middle East, INCLUDING Israel.

Spread this around!!!

Love it - AND it includes phone numbers and twitter addresses.

There are also TOLL FREE Capitol Hill Switchboard numbers in my sig line, and they're still good, too.

April 2, 2015

Truly.

I still don't understand why efforts to turn down the heat in the Middle East are so damn bad.

I still don't understand why or how that is somehow bad for Israel. Or for anybody else over there, for that matter.

AND we need to find more alternatives. MORE ways to provide access to abortion. Because

it's still needed. Women still need that option. Shit happens. And DAMMIT, women STILL need that! We have to get creative.

I read something about an offshore hospital where a woman doctor had set up shop to provide abortions for women whose options were and are steadily being closed down. We need to think of MORE ways in which pregnancy termination is available - whether it's someplace you go, or medication you take, or WHATEVER it is.

WHATEVER.

IT.

IS.

It is URGENT that we stay several steps ahead of these people who've made it their life's work to take our rights away, to take the very sovereignty of OUR BODIES away from us. Because this is an ABSOLUTE. This is NON-NEGOTIABLE.

As we've said about many other issues still oozing like a toxic pustule for years - "We've Already Had This Conversation."

And I just want to say here that I've read the stories (in this thread and elsewhere) and I am grateful to you, my dear DU sisters, who are sharing these stories. Thank you for including us in your truth, your pain, your fear, your hard-earned experience. I'm grateful you are here to tell the tale. You are beacons of light - and enlightenment. You give the rest of us strength, and the fire and fortitude to fight on. You are inspirations, and the reason we're NOT going to give up this right that we all struggled and fought to win in the first place. We are NOT going to go back.

My story came from my late father-in-law. He was an internal-medicine MD.

He was pretty conservative. But not on this issue, which surprised me.

He told this story about something that had happened years ago when he was a young doctor. How he had to rush a hemorrhaging young woman to the hospital, whom he'd found, bleeding nearly to death, and bundled her up in the back of his car so she could lie down across the back seat til he could get her to some help.

She'd just had a back-alley abortion, and of course it went badly. She was, frankly, dying. Butchered and bleeding to death. He got her to the hospital in time and saved her life. He found he could not oppose safe and legal abortion from that moment on. And he sure didn't feel he could sit in judgment of her for what she did. It drove home for him the need for safe and legal termination of pregnancy. So that he wasn't scraping another young woman off the sidewalk while she was bleeding to death.

God Bless him richly! Rest in peace with the Angels, Doc. You were a truly kind and compassionate and noble man.

Makes me wanna cry.

OH DEAR GOD...

Move over, kpete. I need to go cry too.

I swear - every time I walk our dog in our neighborhood, I am aghast at the shit along the curbs. Litter all over the place. Empty coffee cups, lids of every size, wrappers, plastic, plastic forks and spoons, cigarette butts, empty snack bags, take-out containers of paper and cardboard and styrofoam, those repulsive little plastic dental floss thingies - just thrown down and left ON THE GROUND! It's DISGUSTING. I wind up having to take several poo bags with me every time. One for her poo, and at least one more for all the crap people have littered the curbs and gutters with. People in my neighborhood are pigs. They don't pick up after their kids. They don't pick up after their gardeners. The construction and other work crews don't pick up after themselves - and you'd think if there was that mess going on in front of YOUR house or apartment building, maybe YOU might feel just a wee bit responsible for keeping the place orderly.

Every one of those pieces of trash pisses me off. Every one that I see makes me think - well, there's something some little sea creature or bird will swallow and then starve to death or drown. (That last photo just hurts my heart!) There's something else in the flood-control channel/in Santa Monica Bay/in the Pacific Trash Gyre. Hell, in ONE OF THE Pacific Trash GyreS. Plural. There's more than one of 'em.

Disgraceful!!!! Looks like hell! Some people in our neighborhood don't even bother to pick up what their dog(s) did!!! They just leave it there and disappear. It PISSES ME OFF! I guess they just leave it for somebody else to pick up. Like me. And I DO. Because I'll be damned if anybody's gonna think it was MY dog and ME as a shitty, selfish, callous, negligent, thoughtless, entitled dog owner. I cannot believe how much I have to clean up around this neighborhood - just in the space of two blocks. It's just astonishing. And completely REVOLTING!!!!

SHAME on them!!!!!

About calimary

Female. Retired. Wife-Mom-Grandma. Approx. 30 years in broadcasting, at least 20 of those in news biz. Taurus. Loves chocolate - preferably without nuts or cocoanut. Animal lover. Rock-hound from pre-school age. Proud Democrat for life. Ardent environmentalist and pro-choicer. Hoping to use my skills set for the greater good. Still married to the same guy for 40+ years. Probably because he's a proud Democrat, too. Penmanship absolutely stinks, so I'm glad I'm a fast typist! I will always love Hillary and she will always be my President.
