A good reason is you find their policies and tactics abhorrent snd support the democrats and our values and positions.

Not that you stand a better chance of survival on the democratic side.

Running as a Democrat in a deep red Montana district - "a mecca for militia members or sympathizers and doomsday preppers," where "Trump won 74% of the county vote in the 2020 presidential race" - will be tough.

This country needs more young people like him - especially someone who's seen both sides as closely as he has, and who can articulate the difference as well as he can.

Personally, I'd polish my appearance a little more - but he knows his constituents a lot better than I certainly ever could.
