Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders announced seven endorsements from current or former Rhode Island elected officials Tuesday.

The endorsements are from:

- Jeanine Calkin, former state senator from Warwick

- John Donegan, Cranston City Council member

- Kat Kerwin, Providence City Council member

- Alex Kithes, Woonsocket City Council member

- Aaron Regunberg, former state representative from Providence

- Dr. J. Mark Ryan, Portsmouth Town Council member

- Linda Ujifusa, Portsmouth Town Council member

The two state lawmakers, Calkin and Regunberg, were ardent Sanders supporters in 2016 and have continued to support his campaign throughout this election cycle.

“We are proud to receive the endorsement of these legislators, who together reflect the strength of the progressive movement in Rhode Island,” Analilia Mejia, national political director for the Sanders campaign, said in a news release.

Although Sanders, a U.S. Senator from Vermont, has not made any campaign stops in Rhode Island this cycle, volunteers in the state have held dozens of organizing events here. Sanders won the 2016 Democratic primary in Rhode Island, capturing 54.7% of the vote.
