I actually think Uncle Joe's promise of a return to normalcy has a good chance of carrying the day.

The internet is not real life and there is not an insubstantial number of Americans who long for an end to Trump's division and all the fussing and fighting. In the 014 mid terms we lost the suburbs by twelve points and consequently the House. In the 018 mid terms we tied the Repubs in the suburbs and picked up forty one House seats. I would argue your nominal suburbanite is most likely to be attracted by the promise of a return to normalcy.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

He has the common touch. He’s relatable like few others are. And he connects with the so-called working class. He took the train back home to Delaware when the Obama/Biden team had retired. And for all those who felt like betting on trump (?!!?!?!???!?) because they were somehow feeling left out or left behind, he might well bring them back into the tent.

It doesn't matter what people think or want, we are teetering on the edge of no return. I will vote for someone who has consistently expressed a sense of urgency on this issue.

Consider subscribing to the "Environment and Energy" group. Today, in Environment & Energy, we see:

A pod of orcas is starving to death. A tribe is feeding them… (How likely is that to work?)

I like Biden, but I have a problem with that. I don't care for alcohol. I'm over 60. I am looking forward to being able to buy some pot for stress relief at some time before I did. I don't see why I can't.

Thing is, some of the politicians have led such a straight arrow life, that they have no experience with pot or light drugs, so they equate them with the heavy stuff. Pete is in favor of legalizing it, I think...but it's clear he doesn't know much about it, since he referred to it as being addictive, which it's not. Another straight arrow.

Cox was one of the most qualified candidates to not win a Presidential election: a 2 time governor of Ohio and a former US House member- he was governor at the time of the election. According to Wikipedia, Cox was a "capable and well-liked progressive reformer" who had FDR as a running mate. Cox "conducted an activist campaign visiting 36 states and delivering 394 speeches mainly focusing on domestic issues." He wanted to "to fight unemployment and inflation, he suggested simultaneously lower income and business profits taxes. He promised to introduce national collective bargaining legislation and pledged his support to the Volstead Act. Cox spoke in support of Americanization to increase loyalty to the United States among (the) immigrant population," and he lost badly (34% of the vote) to Harding's (60% of the vote) return to normalcy campaign, the first to use modern advertising techniques via advertising guru Albert Lasker.
And how bad was Harding? In an Atlantic article, it states that Harding admitted repeatedly to reporters that he was in over his head. “A man of limited talents,” Harding once said of himself. He too was an Ohioian and won the state in that election against the governor.
But Harding captured the public's desire at the time: a return to normalcy was the winning message.

get anything accomplished. Any and all progressive ideas on healthcare, climate change, voting rights, immigration, equality, etc. will rely on saving the Republic and returning to the Rule of Law.

The situation is that dire.

When I read people bemoaning the 'safe' choice, I'm aghast. If my house is on fire, I want the 'safe' choice of the fire company swooping in as quickly as possible, to save the structure, the bones of the building. It makes little sense to stand back and argue over the cut of the drapes. That's a Steve Bannon mindset.

Joe Biden is a liberal, left-of-center. He has the track record to prove it. He also has the experience and knowledge to step in on Day 1 to put out the fire, turn things around and start the process of healing and rebuilding. He's already spoken to the primary Democratic issues and I'm sure he will speak to them again.

If you want an idea of what he's championing then listen to the speech he gave to the Electrical Workers' Forum. It's all there, including the passion and urgency.

On top of everything else, he can win this thing. And without winning, everything we care about will be flushed down the toilet by Trump and his toadies. We cannot let that happen!

Nothing else truly matters because if our nominee can't do that, it won't matter how outside the box and innovative she or he is. First, we must WIN. And unless Trump doesn't get the R nomination, which is highly unlikely, we must BEAT TRUMP. And the Russians. And the Saudis. And the North Koreans. And the Chinese. These are not "normal" times. This is do or die time. Seriously.

I would argue your nominal suburbanite is most likely to be attracted by the promise of a return to normalcy.

we need to look past the ends of our noses

Quality of life for Americans has been on a downhill trajectory for DECADES. The election of Obama was a reaction to that, but did little to reverse it: we still have ever-accelerating income inequality, attacks on women's autonomy, attacks on labor, burgeoning medical costs, burgeoning education costs, stagnant wages, mass incarcerations, growing corporate dominance of our government, etc etc etc. Obama aimed for--he said--a 2% course correction. I submit that we need to aim WAY higher than that, and the demands are getting bigger every year, as the various crises remain unaddressed.

The question is, do YOU?

oh boohoo Ds didn't vote in the midterms...WHY didn't they vote in the midterms? maybe they did not vote because they didn't feel they got what they voted for. Ever consider that idea? If not, why not?

Speaking for myself only, I was wildly enthusiastic in 2008, long before the definitive financial meltdown in September (clearly it was tanking before then). I wanted our government to stand up for ME: I wanted it to enact laws that benefited ME, that reined in banksters who tanked the global economy while playing with our money in a virtual casino; I wanted it to enact laws that targeted in the greedy and immoral pigs in the health insurance industry and put those assholes on the road to oblivion; I wanted it to condemn the fuckers who started an illegal and pointless war based on lies, ego and greed, that did NOTHING for our national security, that resulted in the deaths of uncounted innocents, that fucking tortured people in my name.

I didn't get any of those things. I got a president--an exemplary human being btw, but one who apparently thought he could heal all the rifts, all the ills, all the evils on this country just by being a good man. He was wrong. "Looking forward and not back" was a disaster. Protecting the banks was a disaster. Protecting the insurance companies was a disaster. Protecting war criminals was a disaster. And look where it got us. Not just in 2010; in 2012 (even though the exemplary human being won again), in 2014, in 2016 too.

In 2018 we finally began to address the damage and to recoup our losses over the last decade. Finally--but it is only the beginning. We have a LONG way to go to make good the losses of the last 40-ish years...and sorry, but returning to the Obama years will not be enough.

Vast sections of our nation are falling apart. Jobs disappeared, roads are decaying, opioids are killing people, entire communities have no hope for improvement. GDP goes up while they are being left behind.

People voted for Trump precisely because he was NOT normal. He promised to blow up the system, They wanted that because the people in power did not know how bad things had gotten. He promised to shake up Washington and fix it. Well he didn't fix it, he made it worse.

So they may be upset with him now, but they weren't happy before, why would they want to go back to that? I think they would much rather try something new. The new thing doesn't have to be far left but it can't be what we had before.

I believe Biden has what it takes to win the moderates as well as even some Republicans who are tired of Trump. It's time for EXPERIENCE to come back to the White House. I'm tired of our Nation being a "laughing stock" of the world.
