Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBiden--Iraq War
Senator Biden voted for the Iraq War. I believe the American death count for that war is around 4,000.
Iraq is certainly not better off.
I will take this into account in the primary election.

(18,265 posts)Someone like Harris or Booker never voted for the Iraq war, for the 1994 Crime Bill, against the Brady Bill, or for exempting the gun industry from law suits. And neither of them is afraid to speak truth to power when it comes to Russia sanctions.

(23,002 posts)'in the general' analyses. It seems to be slightly defeatist, TO ME, in the name of trying to inform someone else of why Biden would be better. I think EW has a great chance. Hillary won. She can too.
just mho of course. I think we have enough to worry abou with trump without going at it like this. JUST ME THOUGH.
P.S. I love Joe Biden.

(17,600 posts)My prediction: lower than the turnout for over-30 voters. Horrible turnout all around.
If young voters want to be taken seriously, they should show up at EVERY election. Including odd-year primaries.

(17,600 posts)Oh, older voters are bad about voting in off-year elections too. But I'm just saying, if young voters want to make a difference, they need to start by showing up. Imagine if this year, out of the 20-ish % turnout overall, the under-30 demo was 50% !! I think next year's candidates would sit up and take notice, FAST.

Former Vice President Joe Biden leads a selection of Democratic presidential candidates and potential candidates among millennial voters, according to a survey released Monday.
According to CBS News, a poll organized by the University of Chicago's GenForward Project found that Biden has the support of 21 percent of voters between the ages of 18 and 34. Coming in second is Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who is supported by 18 percent of millennials, according to the poll.
The poll also showed that young minority voters support Biden. Twenty-nine percent of Asian-American millennials, 28 percent of African-American millennials and 19 percent of Hispanic millennials said they plan to back Biden, the poll found.
The poll was based on interviews with 2,134 millennials from Feb. 8 to Feb. 25 and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points, according to CBS News.

From the CBS article:
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/joe-biden-leads-2020-democrats-in-millennial-support-poll-finds/
Former Vice President Joe Biden, who is mulling a White House bid, leads declared and potential Democratic presidential candidates in support among millennial voters, according to a new poll of adults between the ages of 18 and 34.
The poll, organized by the University of Chicago's GenForward Survey Project, found that 21 percent of millennials back Biden over Democrats who have entered the crowded primary field, including Sens. Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren. Sanders, whose insurgent 2016 campaign was fueled by ardent support among young progressive voters, is a close second at 18 percent.
According to the poll, Biden also enjoys strong support among young minority voters. With support from 29 percent of Asian American millennials, 28 percent of African American millennials and 19 percent of millennial whites, the former Delaware senator led in all surveyed voting blocs except millennial Latinos. Twenty-six percent of Hispanics between the ages of 18 and 34 said they support Sanders. Among that group, Biden came in second with 19 percent support.

When that vote happened, I kept a copy of the tally of those who voted for and against the war. I vowed never to vote for any of those who voted for it.
So I voted for Bernie in the primary but had no choice in the general election and voted for Hillary.
This time I will vote for a primary candidate who appears to have at least eight good years in front of him, so I am looking at a younger candidate than Bernie or Biden. (I still like Bernie.)

There would be no Iraq war but for the purity standards from the Nader lies about Gore. The war is on those who ushered in Bush/Cheney. They wanted to send messages!and look what it got them -war.
It was Republicans who started the Iraq war. Republicans. Those who ushered in Republicans are rightfully to blame.

(54,770 posts)I think Congresspeople often vote for legislation and resolutions when it's going to pass anyway and many would question your patriotism -- or support of the troops -- to vote against. That was a bad time, and I don't condemn candidates for voting for the Iraq Resolution after bush and cheney had drummed up the war. I do condemn bush and cheney and GOPers who helped them set the stage for war. Turned out to be a mass killing of innocent people and destabilized the world. But, I get why some candidates voted for the resolution.

(54,770 posts)because they are racist bigots (not saying that applies to Pete B). And there's a big group of them in our military today.

If a Pete B supporter can ask if Biden, Clinton, etc. is disqualified for voting for Iraq War Resolution, I can ask if the same applies to someone who joined military at a time when their main focus was bombing Muslims.

(6,137 posts)and that vote alone would sink him in the general election. It was the biggest mistake that he and Hillary did in their entire careers.
Had they both voted and advocated strongly against that war, it would have influenced many others to do the same and we would have not destroyed countless lives and drained our budget. There is no apology for that. It is impossible. Never forget that Democrats controlled the senate in 2002, the year that war was authorized.
