It’s only been a few weeks, a true political genius. I agree with him completely that vision gets presidents elected not policies. Besides, in 2020 election, policies will be irrelevant as the focus is on getting democrat elected regardless of views (congress sets laws not president). In that sense, he is auditioning for the right job. If you are running for a legislator position, e.g. senator or rep, then yes, you must focus on policies.

Richard Mourdock and the Chrysler pension fund, Mourdock's loses in court over the Chrysler sale, Democrats licking their wounds left by the Tea Party, the loss by none other than Richard Lugar to the Tea Party, and the fact that no one else was willing to stand up for the Chrysler union workers against Mourdock.

He ends the chapter with the recognition of all the friends and allies he gained in the process and concludes with: "Most of all, I had received a priceless if humbling course of education, a fitting conclusion to a decade of learning." p. 103

A fascinating read for any political junkie.

Wed Apr 17, 2019, 11:01 AM

that automatically disqualifies him from even RUNNING for President?

Sorry, but the second this idiot nation elected (or allowed to be named POTUS) that ass ferret Trump, any ideas of "qualifications" went right out the window...there is no such thing any more as "qualified enough"... a half-eaten ham sandwich is more qualified than our current 'leader'.

Seems to me that the unwritten hesitation for many is the "gay issue". They are not seeing an immense intellect and gifted politician. They are seeing a "gay man" and can't get past it. Believe me, for people who that is a fundamental issue on the right, we are not getting their vote if the contest was between all the saints of all the churches and Satan himself, so I wouldn't worry about them...

Barrack Obama built a coalition that was able to transcend race and won the Presidency twice.
Hillary Clinton built a coalition that was larger than gender and won the vote by nearly 3 million.

I believe Pete Buttegieg can build a coalition that transcends sexual orientation as well...the sad thing is he will be another in a long line of Democratic Presidents whose first priority has to become undoing the dammage of their predecessor.

South Bend has a strong mayor system so the buck really stopped with him

He has overseen a much larger group of staff and employees than any Senator or Representative does.

He has dealt with so many different things that come up for any executive, including a lot of interfacing with the federal government. In terms of foreign policy, he was a big leg up on many, as he is a veteran (only other vet in race is Gabbard, who will be one of the first to drop out) and has post grad degree that encompasses a multi-disciplinary approach to global interlocks. It was not just any degree either, it was the Oxford Philosophy, Politics and Economics programme, which is one of the most rigorous in the world and in which he earned a 'First' which is extraordinarily rare).

again, this time at the Senate or Governor. Far too early to tell. I keep seeing people positing that Beto can take Texas in a general. I just do not see that happening. He still lost by well over 200,000 votes to a very unpopular Cruz in a Democratic wave year. Trump beat Clinton by over 800,000 votes and the demographics have not changed THAT much. Trying to 'expand the map' by going after Arizona, Texas, Arkansas, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, and Georgia was one of the larger strategic blunders we made in the 2016 campaign, as it came at the expense of hammering home in the Midwest swing states (PA included), North Carolina, and Florida.

The Washington Post in 2014 was already warning of this.

The Atlantic saw this coming a week before the election.

Is Donald Trump Outflanking Hillary Clinton?
The Democratic nominee faces the risk that she has overestimated her hold on the states most central to her strategy.
