This Dog Bites Back: Buttigieg smacks down hecklers

‘Sodom and Gomorrah!’: Buttigieg brushes off anti-gay hecklers in Iowa

(snip) During a town hall event in Fort Dodge, a protester stood up and shouted: “You betray your baptism!” before he was escorted out of the building.

Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who is a devout Christian and openly gay, responded: “Coffee after church gets a little rowdy sometimes.”

(snip) At another rally in Des Moines, a protester shouted “Sodom and Gomorrah!” in a biblical reference commonly used by anti-gay religious protesters.

“The good news is, the condition of my soul is in the hands of God but the Iowa Caucuses are up to you,” Buttigieg said

I also greatly appreciate what he said:

“We’ve got to acknowledge — without giving an inch on the racism or xenophobia that played a role in that campaign — we’ve got to also pay attention to the things that make people susceptible to that message and make sure we’re addressing them,” he said.

A lot of that from the "christian" right-wingnuts. He's handled it well so far, but this is just beginning skirmish in the christian right all out war against his being gay. He's a smart, smart man, and I don't believe he'll cave in to their dirty, hideous onslaught. Go get 'em, Mayor Pete!

I think it will depend on how AA political leaders (Obamas, Harris, Booker, Abrams, Sharpton, etc) and church leaders respond to him.

If he keeps - authentically - quoting scripture I think that may bridge the gap and help devout AA feel strongly connected to him. I think the fact he is gay is making it okay to quote scripture for people who are typically turned off by that.

If he is a smart young man, he’ll ask Harris or Abrams to be on his ticket.

Also - I live Dr. Warren and want her to become Czar of Consumer Protection and anti-monopolization. What she has done and continues to do has improved the lives of so many people.

We know we will be up against the most corrupt, amoral, well funded and desperate campaign imaginable. Wedge issues will be exploited on a scale never before seen. Mayor Pete and his husband kissing will be inescapable.

I think Warren needs to police Wall Street. And several departments, which is why I'm sticking with her for POTUS for now.

Sharpton also calls out black churches that are anti gay .

it's white people who are the ones that still make excuses with things like economic anxiety instead of facing the bigotry in their communities.

White people make excuses for anti-gay white biogots by saying that the bigots are like that only because of economic anxiety? I’ve heard that crap from some Whites, but definitely not all.

I’ve heard the Rev call out anti-gay congregations in past. I feel lucky he is working at MSNBC - it is a good platform for him.

Pretty sure Oprah will have her say at some point.

One thing I feel secure about. Buttigieg is so savvy about presidential campaigning. He has worked on them in 2004 & 2008. And his youth will inspire as well as communicate directly where voters are via methodology I'm pretty sure most of us are clueless about.

I went to a funeral at a Black church. A person came in who was clearly Trans and was readily accepted by the Black people at the funeral. So it is a mixed bag, the fire and brimstone churches may reject Mayor Pete, but that may not happen across Black churches as a rule. I have stated here several times, African Anerican voters are as a group the wisest voters, they understand where their important self-interests are. Most will try to find out how Mayor Pete treated AA in South Bend (and that record seems to be solid) and then they will make their decision.

Ugh

Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry and other homophobic activists protested a campaign event for out presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg in Iowa.

Terry told Associated Press reporter Alexandra Jaffe that Buttigieg “glorifies and normalizes a sinful behavior.”

At the Monday rally, Terry started yelling, “That is Sodom and Gomorrah,” but the cheers were downed out when supporters chanting “Pete,” as seen in video published by the Des Moines Register.

“The good news is the condition of my soul is in the hands of God,” Buttigieg then told supporters as protestors were drowned out, “but the Iowa caucuses are up to you.”

As I've said elsewhere, Iowa needs Terry around about as much as bubonic plague outbreak.

so I couldn’t measure his tone. He responded with good humor and respect ... even when a protestor was there for a second time.

“Coffee after church gets a little rowdy sometimes.” could have been zinger. I had not seen the delivery.
