Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Amy Acton will order polls closed as part of a health emergency, Gov. Mike DeWine said Monday night, effectively canceling in-person voting for Tuesday’s primary election.

No one is required to endanger their health. If I had a regular influenza bug on voting day, and I had not arranged for an absentee ballot or to vote by mail, I simply could choose not to vote. That has always been my right. Everyone has the right to choose not to vote if they think that it will make them sick. This line is nonsense:

"They mustn't be forced to choose between their health and exercising their constitutional rights"

Does anyone normally ever freak out because some people choose not to vote because they are sick? For some reason, Dewine does not want this primary to occur tomorrow, and I believe that it has little to do with coronavirus. This situation smells to high heaven.

From a Republican Ohio House of Representatives member, reacting to the DeWine administration's decision to close polling places tomorrow for health reasons

We have a constitutional crisis now in Ohio. I will be fighting in the AM to keep our polling locations OPEN in the 83rd district with law enforcement, as the Ohio Department of Health can not shut down an election. #ConstitutionalCrisis

There just is not enough testing.

We have no idea the extent to which this virus has spread.

The primary is technically over any way due to Biden's lead in both delegate count and the polls.

I just think of those sweet older folks sitting there helping people as poll workers.

I'd hate to see a single one get sick because we don't have the patience to see Biden wipe the floor with Bernie again.

What's to stop KGoP governors across the country from declaring a health emergency requiring them to close polling places?

What if they identify "hot zones" as being in predominantly blue districts, and close those while leaving red districts open?

This is the most worrisome news I've seen since Mango Mussolini was declared the winner of the Electoral College.

We are in deep and uncharted waters.

Edited to add: I have the same feeling in my gut, seeing this news, that I had when I heard that the Supreme Court had stopped the Florida recount in 2000.

God damn the Electoral College.

In an affidavit filed with the lawsuit, Reardon says she was recently treated for pancreatic cancer and suffers from a severe immune deficiency. She says if the primary election is held on March 17, she will have to forego her right to vote instead of potentially expose herself to COVID-19. "

I live in CT. All bars and restaurants are closed except for takeout service, schools are closed indefinitely, we’ve been told by the governor to work from home if we can and not travel unless it’s necessary. If the Ohio primary is held, it will a/ suppress turnout and b/ put the people who participate needlessly at risk. The obvious solution for the remaining primaries would be to do them by mail-in ballot but is there enough time to arrange that?
