Sanders sees path to beating Trump in Rust Belt

(snip)

Sanders’s aides and advisers are convinced that the self-described democratic socialist is the candidate best positioned to win over working-class voters in 2020, arguing that his populist message and insurgent style will yield gains in states carried by Trump.

(snip)

But they also say that his core message — that decades of lopsided trade deals and special interests in Washington have exacted a toll on the country’s working class — has a particular appeal to many of the voters who put Trump in the White House, especially those in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

"They realize now that they’ve been hoodwinked, and who’s more to trust than someone who’s been talking about this their entire career?” Chuck Rocha, a senior adviser to Sanders, said.

Norman Solomon, a coordinator for an informal group of Sanders delegates called the Bernie Delegates Network, said Sanders is positioning himself "to win over people who voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012" but cast ballots for Trump in 2016.

Ignoring facts will not make these facts go away in the real world

You do know that sanders will not be getting any support from African American voters in the primaries? The booing of Congressman John Lewis was a planned stunt by the sanders delegates. The Clinton campaign found out about it and I was warned about this stunt 20 to 30 minutes in advance. According to my whip, sanders was asked to stop this stunt and declined. The fact that sanders delegates booed Congressman John Lewis will come up and be used in ads. I know that my whip would be glad to show up in an ad about

How will sanders get the nomination without any significant African American support?

27. No one took sanders seriously last cycle and so the press never vetted sanders
Sat Apr 13, 2019, 10:12 PM
Apr 2019

No one took sanders seriously and so he was not vetted. Vetting is important I amso glad that sanders is being vetted this cycle https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/01/28/why-bernie-sanders-has-an-uphill-climb-ahead/?utm_term=.1b4f90c2a717

Finally, what happens when the oppo dump on Sanders comes? We have no idea, because it never happened in 2016. Clinton was so terrified of alienating his supporters and seeing them vote for Jill Stein in the general election (or not vote at all) that she tiptoed around him for pretty much the entirety of the primary campaign. That doesn’t mean that he’ll be destroyed when stories about the more colorful aspects of his history start cropping up, but there’s just no way to know.

Which is what we could say about the Sanders candidacy as a whole: There’s no way to know how it’s going to go. But he’s got his work cut out for him.

See also https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/19/politics/bernie-sanders-2020-campaign-donald-trump/index.html?utm_source=twCNNp&utm_content=2019-02-20T14%3A52%3A07&utm_term=image&utm_medium=social%C2%A0

2. How will he withstand more scrutiny and more attacks?
One of the secrets to Sanders' success in 2016 was that no one -- most especially Clinton -- thought he had any chance of going anywhere in the race. Clinton largely ignored him for the better part of 2015, allowing some problematic parts of Sanders' record for Democrats -- most notably his voting record on guns -- to go unnoticed. (When the race began to tighten, Clinton gently prodded Sanders on guns and health care.) Sanders, too, largely flew under the radar of investigative reporters for major news outlets who were busy looking into Clinton, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and others seen as more viable candidates. (That reality clearly benefited Donald Trump in the early days of the campaign, as well.)

Sanders will get no pass -- from either the media or his fellow candidates -- this time around. He is among the frontrunners -- and will be treated as such. His wife's time as president of Burlington College could well come up. And his opponents will do a deep dive into his nearly 30 years of votes as a member of the House and Senate. This is all very normal stuff in a campaign. But not for Sanders.

There is a ton of strong opposition research out there that will come out this cycle

Sat Apr 13, 2019, 10:01 PM
Apr 2019
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/04/13/biden-bulldogs-1272931

The two-term vice president has a built-in institutional advantage over his Democratic rivals as he prepares to enter the crowded primary as the presumptive frontrunner in the contest to take on President Donald Trump. Biden has a stable of as many as a dozen senators and still more in the House that are prepared to vouch for him when he inevitably comes under siege.....

Yet no other White House hopeful has such a broad congressional coalition as Biden, who can likely count House members and senators like Doug Jones of Alabama to align with him once he gets in the race. The candidate most closely trailing him in the polls, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), has a fraction of the support in the party establishment that Biden has. Few rose to Sanders’ defense amid criticism that he’s been to slow to release his tax returns, particularly in comparison to when Biden has faced a backlash.

“Longstanding relationships with people who know you, who know who you are and what you stand for, always gives you credibility,” said Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.). Biden eulogized her husband, former Rep. John Dingell — the longest serving lawmaker in history — earlier this year.

“I’m not meaning to make a comparison,” Coons said. But “among the two dozen [Senate Democrats] who did serve with him, at least half of them are being advocates for him.”

It's okay to admit to that, especially when, ironically, another person, whom you're defending, doesn't even go as far as you. Maybe when you apologize, Bernie will too for any perceived transgressions that he may have committed.

In the meantime, Bernie will continue to move ever closer to the nomination. I know that doesn't sit well with some... we've gotten through the denial phase and just need to get through the anger phase and we'll be well on our way to acceptance that Bernie will be our next President.

I also suspect that if Bernie is the nominee Nevada, Colorado, and Virginia could flip to Trump. The down ballot implications could be worse and it could flip the House of Representatives to the GOP.

6. "decades of lopsided trade deals and special interests"?

Apr 2019

So basically he's planning another full-frontal bash of NAFTA, the TPP, and of course, the ACA, meaning Clinton-Obama-Biden and their "special interest" base which is normally a euphemism for trade unions, teachers, the elderly, and affirmative action beneficiaries.

Good luck with that.

please get back to us after Biden actually starts running.

Virtually every poll in the past 3 and a half years had Bernie beating Trump but Nate said that didn't count because it was just during the primaries, now he's touting a candidate that isn't even running?

Maybe Joe bucks the trend on his third go around and does better than his prior 5th place showing in Iowa last time... guess we'll see.

I can see him flaming out this time around, too. Remember in 2008 Fred Thompson from Law and Order who was begged to run for the republicans? He finally jumped in and poof, he didn't get very far. People love the idea of Joe running until he actually does. Granted, I liked him one of those times, too. But not for the entire primary season.

Let's not forget that he was on the Obama-Biden ticket that got elected in 2008 and 2012. That gives him an edge no one else can match.

One almost sensed from the breathless coverage of women who decided years later to object to former vice president Joe Biden’s non-sexual hugs and pats and kisses on the head that they expected the media to think it would be a fatal or near-fatal blow to Biden’s presidential chances. Not only was it not fatal, it didn’t register as particularly relevant to most Democratic voters. He was atop the polls before these stories aired, and he is atop them now.

Biden has been in the public eye since the 1970s, and unlike Hillary Clinton, who claimed the public never really knew her, voters feel like they know Biden pretty darn well. Many voters don’t remember anything before his vice presidency, his demonstrably warm relationship with President Barack Obama, his remarkable dignity after the death of his beloved son Beau, and his emotional goodbye to the late senator John McCain. He has established a level of emotional intimacy with voters that few politicians attain. He’s the chatty next-door neighbor, the avuncular relative and the co-worker who remembers everyone’s birthday.
