Oh my! Bernie Sanders Raises $10 Million in Less Than a Week

No wonder there is all this talk about jets

By Shane Goldmacher
Feb. 25, 2019

A clutch of advisers to Senator Bernie Sanders began arriving at the Capitol Hill townhouse that served as his makeshift headquarters before dawn last Tuesday, where they readied themselves to track, among other things, the deluge of donations that would land after Mr. Sanders made his presidential campaign official.

As the team snacked on doughnuts that Jeff Weaver, Mr. Sanders’s 2016 campaign manager, had brought for launch day, one laptop screen showed a map of the United States. It would light up with an orange dot every time someone gave with the location of each donation.

Within minutes of the 7 a.m. announcement, the whole screen was glowing orange, according to people in the room.

By Monday, after less than a week as a presidential candidate, Mr. Sanders has collected $10 million from 359,914 donors, campaign officials said. But perhaps just as daunting a figure for his rivals is this: Nearly 39 percent of those donors used an email address that had never before been used to give to Mr. Sanders.

primary today, I would vote for:

24 hour mark 220,000 supporters had donated $6 million. I donated the famous $27 contribution myself.

If you do the math on that first 24 hours:
$6,000,000 / 220,000 = ~$27 per contributor.

At the $10 million mark:
$ 10,000,000 / 359,914 = $27.78 per contributor.

You can calculate an average. But people don't donate averages. There are usually big moneyed donors at the top, and a lot of small donations at the bottom ($5, $10).

There are donors who have contributed thousands, I guarantee you.

Of COURSE not all people donated the same or similar amount. The history and common sense of donations says that.

There are always big donations at the top, and a lot of small donations at the bottom. You can always calculate an average or get a median. That tells you something. But it does not tell you how many donors donated over $1k or how many donated $50, and so on.

If I have a basket of stocks that pay dividends, my average yield might be 5%. That would include a couple that pay 10%, several paying 6% and 8%, and a group paying 2% or 3%.

If you contribute $10, and I donate $2, the average donation is $6. Neither of us donated $6.

That's just the reality of things.

Who the big donors are will be interesting to find out.

There are big donations, and then a lot of small ones. There would be a lot of $5, $10 donations, and there would be donations in the thousands, to reach $10Million.

But yes, that's what that means.

Having big donors is not a sin. Being a millionaire is not a sin, either.

He has a big, young set of supporters who can't contribute much, if anything. And having a large young set of supporters is good.

He is all of these things. He is human. But there's no need to try to say that he only gets small donations, and things like that.

That saying something. Here is an important quote from the article (that the OP also included):

By Monday, after less than a week as a presidential candidate, Mr. Sanders has collected $10 million from 359,914 donors, campaign officials said. But perhaps just as daunting a figure for his rivals is this: Nearly 39 percent of those donors used an email address that had never before been used to give to Mr. Sanders.

For Mr. Sanders, the flood of money from fresh email addresses suggested to his team that he was dramatically expanding a donor network that had already dwarfed his 2020 competition.

“Our second day,” said Ari Rabin-Havt, a senior adviser to Mr. Sanders, “was bigger than anybody else’s first day.”

I didn't give him money this week, after finding out we'll now owe $2K from the Republican tax increase. But I definitely will when we are able.

Pretty amazing about the whole 'jets' controversy isn't it? The same people who bad-mouthed him during the last primary, then accused him of not campaigning enough for Hillary, and ever since have blamed him for her loss, are now complaining about him using a private jet to campaign for her.

The email from Bernie asked for $27 as a contribution to the revolution. If I remember correctly its the default amount when you log into actblue. You can of course change it to a smaller or larger amount, but I suspect most went with what he asked for.

Anyone who is fairly successful at running for President becomes wealthy (or wealthier). He becomes nationally known and can command good fees for speaking engagements, there are book deals, and all sorts of perks.

So if he used funds from inheritance to buy the house, that just freed up his own money to be used for something else. He's a millionaire, after all. I suspect they all are.

(He got a book deal out of the last run for President....he made a LOT of money from that.)

Does that mean she will be a millionaire and out of touch. No it doesn't. It is just another talking point so people can criticize Bernie. I understand if you don't like him or his policies. But yes lets be real, most of the people in congress have a lot of money.

Running for President is not always an altruistic act for the so-called good of the country. If someone is fairly successful, he or she stands to gain big-time. That explains why people keep running for President, even though he keeps losing. Thar's gold in them thar hills.

Bernie is no different. He is human, like everyone else. (and a capitalist?)

He's near the end of his life. He wants a legacy. He desperately wants to be President. IMO, he thinks he'd be a good President and should have been President.

But he also could use the money. He hasn't become as wealthy as most of the others in Congress. I don't think he cashed in on his prior runs for President...maybe because he didn't run successfully. He never even got close.

I don't question that once most candidates are in office, they think they would be good for the country and would do their best to that end. But the reason some of the ones who run keep running...is that they gain from it,if they are successful at it. I think that's why Trump ran a couple of times. It increased his brand and made him money. He became a household name.

69. Regarding Jane's daughter, from the VT digger article regarding this matter.
Mon Feb 25, 2019, 11:36 PM
Feb 2019

“I was impressed that she was there, putting aside what had happened to her mom,” a former administrator said. “She was really matter-of-fact about the deal. She said, ‘I never dealt with my mom, anyway. My relationship was always with Christine. It’s really nothing different.’”

The largely flattering NEASC report notes that, in 2011, the woodworking school was “self-supporting” and generated “net income for the college.”

Leopold argued the program was a net gain and made the school more appealing at a time when administrators were seeking to boost enrollment.

“If it was generating a net profit, no matter how small, then what’s the problem?” Leopold asked. “The association with the woodworking school had an intangible benefit, and it expanded the offerings of the college.”

Leopold said there “was nothing improper” and that board members were aware of the relationship between Sanders and Driscoll.

Most of the people here are very nice and want to share thoughts and points of view and some are just bitter and have very little to share other than their point of view. Engage with the former and try not to let the latter bother you too much. Just like life in general.

“Daunting a figure for his rivals”.
It is not a daunting figure for his rivals. In June 2016
Jen Bush has raised 162 million dollars
Ted Cruz 158 million
Marco Rubio 125 million
Ben Carson 76 million
Cheeto 67 million and he had won the nomination.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/us/elections/election-2016-campaign-money-race.html

In politics votes matter more than money. My point is not to say this is bad for Sanders. Any candidate would rather have more money than their rivals at the start of the campaign but there is hyperbole in this article.

BTW isn’t it shocking to see that Carson had out raised Cheeto in June 2016. I did not know that.
