Octogenarian actor and activist Jane Fonda declared ahead of a climate action protest in California Friday that the U.S. needs a "climate president" and she is now backing Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is leading a grassroots movement challenging the Democratic Party establishment coalescing around former Vice President Joe Biden.
"We have to get a climate president in office, and there's only one right now, and that's Bernie Sanders," Fonda told USA TODAY prior to the Los Angeles rally. "So, I'm indirectly saying I believe you have to support the climate candidate."
... USA Today noted that Fonda previously donated to Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who have since ended their campaigns.
Sanders' Green New Deal proposal to tackle the global climate crisis and ensure a just transition to renewable energy has been hailed by climate advocates as a "game-changer." The plan, unveiled in August 2019, calls for "100% renewable energy for electricity and transportation by no later than 2030 and complete decarbonization by at least 2050."
Fonda's comments about supporting Sanders came ahead of the second Fire Drill Friday event in California. In October 2019, Fonda launched Fire Drill Fridays as a weekly civil disobedience campaign in Washington, DC that aimed to pressure U.S. policymakers to ambitiously address the human-caused climate crisis.

(9,952 posts)Here is why. This is years later. All our Democrats know to get on it. He is tied to Obama and Michelle, and they certainly know. I am confident Biden will get people in there that will get on it.

He has the room for it. We're all in this particular boat together--it will only help him with the vote, not hurt him, and it is the right thing to do.
I have faith that he will.

(9,952 posts)So yes, it is easily solvable and I do not think it will take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. Obama was addressing in his second term. HRC knew to go there. And it is four years later. Not something that will have me consider other than Biden.

but if there is one thing that may attract reasonable voters who are currently supporting his opponent, this might be it.

(1,089 posts)I'm not a "rocket scientist" but I am a rocket engineer who has recently worked on wind turbines. Climate change is a huge problem...not just a technical one but an economic one as well. The challenges to significantly curb it are daunting...not just how we're actually gonna do it but how exactly are we gonna pay for it which is every bit as important from a practical standpoint as the engineering issues involved.
IMO, it will take a Manhattan Project or Apollo Program-like effort to even begin to seriously address the issue...a major commitment of both manpower and resources. It will take a lot more than just mere arm-waving and unrealistic policies financed by God knows what source. How Bernie proposes to pay for such an effort after spending $30 trillion in a decade on Medicare for All is beyond me. I've seen estimates that it will take anywhere from $40 to $70 trillion to put an effective end to climate change.
I just don't see that happening anytime soon by any candidate, but at the very least we can get a federal government with leaders and agency heads who will even just admit that there's a very real clear and present danger. Maybe once we're all hip-deep in seawater and sweltering in December we'll finally muster up the will to act. Until then, Biden is just as good as Bernie and probably better since he can actually win the general election. If we lose this one that's just another 4 years of blindly heading down a path with a big brick wall at the end of it.
Apologies for being such a Negative Nelly...but there's a helluva lotta stuff to be pessimistic about these days. Guess we all have days like this and it's just my day. Perhaps I should just stop bitching and go design a nuclear fusion reactor tonight and then none of this will be a problem tomorrow.

(41,832 posts)Vice President Biden knows there is no greater challenge facing our country and our world. Today, he is outlining a bold plan a Clean Energy Revolution to address this grave threat and lead the world in addressing the climate emergency.
Biden believes the Green New Deal is a crucial framework for meeting the climate challenges we face. It powerfully captures two basic truths, which are at the core of his plan: (1) the United States urgently needs to embrace greater ambition on an epic scale to meet the scope of this challenge, and (2) our environment and our economy are completely and totally connected.

(22,045 posts)Ms. Fonda has been a life-long Democrat and supporter of progressive issues.
However, her comment that Sanders is the only candidate with a plan for climate change is hyperbolic at best.

(1,089 posts)Clinton wanted to use natural gas as a "bridge fuel". While natural gas has certain distinct advantages over other fossil fuels like coal and oil it is a major cause of methane pollution which is a FAR worse greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide and would accelerate climate change greatly.
But it appears that in Jane's case gender trumped global warming in 2016 when she had a clear choice between the two. You call her endorsement "hyperbolic"...I might call it "disingenuous".
Still like her but that doesn't mean we can't call people out when they're inconsistent, be they friend or foe.
