(67,782 posts)Biden has now opened up by 89 total delegates. It was thought that if he came out of Super Tuesday behind by only 100 delegates he'd be in good shape to win. This is almost 200 delegates higher than that.

(31,261 posts)there were something like 3.7 million uncounted votes then. So those numbers would say 7-8 million people are confirmed to have voted, with an unknown number still in the mail.
Essentially, if Biden continues to gain, he could be close to even with Sanders when all the counting is done. That is pretty huge, it makes California pretty much a wash.

(31,261 posts)There are 3.2 million votes in hand to be counted. If the count is at 95% and there are 3.2 million ballots to be counted still, that says something like over 40 million people voted, even without taking into account ballots that are arriving late via mail. 95% of precincts likely have reported some or all votes, but with 3.2 million remaining to be counted, it is unlikely than any but the smallest precincts have finished counting.

(90,774 posts)I don't know how many of our 40 million Californians are eligible to vote, but we are a humongous population. Hubby and I vote by mail.
That said, I would have expected a more intelligent voting setup last week. Los Angeles was apparently a mess.

(5,559 posts)5+ million voted in 2016 and this year was expected to be much higher as part of Super Tuesday.
We are not yet at 3 million votes counted according to your own link.
There are easily 2.5 million to go.

(31,261 posts)The completion is down around 60%. There is a lot of votes still left to be counted and they are the late votes, Biden pounded Sanders across the country with that vote.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
Not sure if we can assume if the votes left to be counted are early or late but either way we got some serious JoeMo on our hands.
Which reminds me...I gotta fill out my ballot and get that sucker in before our March 17th primary.

(31,261 posts)The counting of early votes in hand is done before Election Day, that is why initial numbers get reported. The state would know how many ballots it send out, but all it knows is the ones sent back and that are in house waiting to be counted. The number arriving late in mail is unknown.

(1,089 posts)When you said "late" votes I didn't know if you meant mail-in vs same day or just later on election day. If it's the former then I agree with you 100% and Biden should continue to creep up.
Some states require that you get a mail-in ballot in a week before the primary day while others only require that it arrive by the same day. Guess some states are faster counters than others.
Sure seems to me that this whole election thingy went a lot faster when I was a little kid before computers and smartphones. Maybe we can somehow blame this apparent regression on Microsoft and Google...LOL.

(1,089 posts)if that's right that ain't no 94%...LOL.
Oh, well...it'll be what it is. Considering where Joe was a mere week or two before the CA primary I woulda been happy with 20% at the time.
By St Patrick's Day it may not matter much even if California is STILL counting!

(81,869 posts)But I don't know if it means that it is the final report. LA has reported numbers and still has over 600,000 ballots to count from what I read.

(1,089 posts)hard to point an accusing finger at Texas for their long lines when the bluest state in the Union looked to be every bit as bad.
This voting shit ain't exactly rocket science and it's pretty embarrassing for the country whether the screwups are due to malevolence or incompetence.

(81,869 posts)California sends ballots to everyone and allows them to mail them in. More people get to vote. That's positive.

(1,089 posts)but should it really take them 5 or 6 or even 8 hours standing in line to do it? Some people stood in line for several hours and finally had to leave before casting their ballot...that just ain't right.
Consolidating 3500 voting places down to 350 or whatever the hell it was and then putting only 5 machines at one polling place...2 of which were broken. Insufficient staffing...untested software...yada yada yada.
Unacceptable in 2020. Thank God these election people don't work at NASA or on Wall Street.

It's showing there are still 3,247,283 unprocessed ballots. Breakdown by county is included in the report.

(6,476 posts)just like the late votes in just about every other state
that's a lot more than the total number of voters in the Texas Democratic Primary which was 2,076,046 votes. Could very well be an improbable comeback with Bernie leading by about 276,000 votes right now

(31,261 posts)Remember, we heard that voters held their ballots and had not voted. We also know that Biden crushed the late and day of vote in other states and Bloomberg crashed real hard in that vote. With over 3 million votes left, it isn't out of the question for Biden to either win California or come so close that there would be no difference between his delegates and Sanders'.

(2,412 posts)Theres something new here today, a refreshing lack of Bernie bashing and Bernie supporter bashing. I guess people have finally realized that it is counterproductive to alienate the left wing of the party. This is a good move. We have to eventually come together for the good of the country. This is adult behavior and it feels really good. I felt so bullied just for wanting more for poor people!

Hekate
(90,774 posts)PS: It's not bashing to disagree heartily -- it's what politics is about. By the same token, it's not bullying to point out bad behavior by (mumblemumble) supporters, in the hopes that they will stop (for instance) doxxing people who disagree with them.
All of us (and I am sincere in saying all) need to take responsibility as it presents itself. We've got a hard year ahead trying to get rid of Trump and Trumpists, made much worse by their malicious incompetence in the face of a pandemic.
Pull together! Persevere!
