Joe Biden's statement re: commitments to and plans for Native communities

JOE BIDEN’S COMMITMENT TO INDIAN COUNTRY BY NATIVE NEWS ONLINE STAFF / CURRENTS / 04 MAR 2020

WASHINGTON — The following statement was released by the Biden for President on Tuesday, March 3, 2020:

For decades, Joe Biden has worked to foster tribal sovereignty and prosperity, and to ensure the United States follows through on the commitments it has made to Indian Country. He knows that Tribal Nations should be empowered to govern Native communities and that the United States must work harder to meet its solemn trust and treaty obligations. As president, Joe will build on the progress made under the Obama-Biden Administration to strengthen the nation-to-nation relationship and to support the sovereignty and prosperity of tribal nations.

HIGHLIGHTS OF JOE’S RECORD

Joe Biden is proud of the partnership between the Obama-Biden Administration and tribal communities. The Obama-Biden Administration ensured tribal governments will have the power to investigate, prosecute, convict and sentence non-Native Americans who assault indigenous women on tribal lands, through the 2013 Violence Against Women Act, which Joe originally authored. The Obama-Biden Administration strengthened the nation-to-nation relationship including by creating White House Council on Native American Affairs and the White House Tribal Nations Conference, prioritizing tribal consultation, and appointing Native Americans in high-level government positions. The Obama-Biden Administration paved the way for reconciliation by settling long-standing trust, accounting, and management disputes and achieving the historic $3.4 billion Cobell settlement, creating the Land Buy-back program which restored millions of acres of land to Tribal governments. The Obama-Biden Administration also settled twelve important water rights settlements totaling $3 billion, more than any other Administration in history, allowing Tribal governments to build infrastructure for clean drinking water and economic development. That Administration also improved Native Americans’ access to health care through the Affordable Care Act, covering 110,000 additional American Indian and Alaska Natives and nearly 30,000 additional Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders. And, the Obama-Biden Administration empowered Native youth, creating Generation Indigenous to improve opportunities for Native youth by encouraging federal investment and fostering dialogue.
