Biden appears to close the door on Warren joining his administration

‘We need her continued work in the Senate’

Joe Biden hailed Elizabeth Warren as “the fiercest of fighters for middle class families” after she decided to suspend her presidential campaign, while seemingly closing the door to the senator joining his potential White House administration.

The former vice president celebrated Ms Warren in a statement posted to his Twitter account shortly after she announced her decision to end a bid for the Democratic nomination on Thursday, writing: “Her work in Washington, in Massachusetts, and on the campaign trail has made a real difference in people’s lives.”

“We needed her voice in this race,” he said, “and we need her continued work in the Senate.”

Mr Biden’s statement on the latest departure from the 2020 race left virtually no room for political analysts and TV pundits to ponder whether he would announce Ms Warren as his running mate, if he managed to secure the Democratic nomination.

We need all our Senators to remain Senators this election. We have to add more so one or two jumping into Cabinet positions isn't really best. There are probably quite a few who have left who would return to put the government back together.

Don't think we'd have too much trouble getting another Dem to replace her...Joe Kennedy for one. Same thing applies to Harris and Gillibrand if Joe wanted to put a progressive woman on the ticket. And CA and NY also have Dem Governors who would appoint another D until a special election could be held.

I also like Sherrod Brown for a progressive #2 but that would be a lot riskier. He would likely help Biden win Ohio for some extra electoral college insurance just in case Michigan or Wisconsin effed up again but if we took back the White House we might lose that seat. Joe would feel pretty damn dumb if he became President only to wind up with 49 Democratic Senators and 51 Republican ones.

And these are just the Senators...lots more good options if we wanted to select somebody from outside Congress.

I've been a huge fan of Brown for quite some time.

We'll scratch his name off the VP list for now but you had damn well better deliver OH in November! Fairly confident Biden can win it on his own but never hurts to have a little help.

It would be unseemly for Biden to be making cabinet announcements at this stage. So the assumption is and should be that Warren will continue to be a valuable member of the Senate. Whether she ends up in a Biden cabinet is far off in the future but I wouldn't read this tweet as somehow precluding that outcome.
