Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWarren can't be VP for the same reason Sherrod Brown can't
Just, put either of those thoughts to bed. We can't have a Republican governor replacing either of those seats.
And this is why state-level races are important.

ABRAMS.
(this coming from a 60+ white guy in AZ who would (normally) be the typical knuckle-dragging Trumptard...)
Yet, Stacey will be the bridge to FINALLY elect a woman president in 2028. And a woman of color to boot!!!
At that point I will be a pasty white 70 something male who will go to my grave SMILING because the US will FINALLY have a BLACK WOMAN PRESIDENT. In my FUCKING LIFETIME. How glorious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And watching the Reich wing heads explode will only be a side benefit, but a benefit nonetheless....

She is experienced and she is a fighter.
She was my top pick for President.

(3,974 posts)And doesn't help make purple or even red states competitive. So she brings nothing to the table there. Plus any progressive appeal she may have would be mitigated by her record as a prosecutor. And after her attacks on Biden in the debate and failure to endorse him before the California primary she could be cast as an opportunistic hypocrite by running on the same ticket as Biden.

(34,136 posts)There are several people who might be better but they are all in the Senate and we need them there. Ms. Abrams has proven herself a leader by the work she has done since the Georgia election was stolen from her.
Another contender should be Val Demings. She was brilliant during the impeachment, though that might turn some against her.
Julian Castro would be good, but I really, really want a woman in a strong place to take the presidency in my lifetime. Unfortunately, Castro gives me a little of Tim Kaine's vibe - a really good, smart man but not terribly charismatic.
We've only had one minority in office so a woman of color would be my ideal VP.

(2,706 posts)This fantasy they will turn out in high numbers in November is just that. A fantasy.
Winning back midwest moderates won us 2018. It will win us 2020.
You go after the reliable voters. Amy appeals to them.
Biden will have a tough race. But our base is not enough. And our base will be there for Biden in November. We need those who left to come back. Biden doesnt need a VP pick to appeal to the base. He needs a VP pick to appeal to the general electorate.

(285 posts)I understand the draw of an African American woman. But why choose someone whose political experience is 11 years as a state representative and a single failed gubernatorial race.
There are currently 25 African American women Democrats in the US Congress. Wouldn't their experience on the national stage be of more benefit to someone who could be President in February of 2021 (if something were to happen to Sanders or Biden)?
I am not saying Ms Abrams is not someone I want to see grow in the party. And given the right experience she might be ready for a 2028 run, but I don't think she is ready to step into the Oval Office this time next year.
Better than our current president, certainly. But she is not the only woman of color for whom that could be said.

(2,706 posts)I dont think it has to be an AA woman. Biden already has the AA base. The VP needs to appeal to the same moderate women that won us 2018.
But if it had to be, Harris is qualified and ready day 1.

(34,136 posts)They have both been in Congress, both have had strong careers outside of national government, and both have name recognition.
On the other hand, Stacey Abrams has had a very strong leadership role since her bid for governor was stolen from her and is excellent in the area of voter registration and voter rights.

(285 posts)Lee is 70. I think I would rather see some youth (under 60) to help balance the ticket.
Demings has a strong background at the local and national levels, including her recent exposure in the Impeachment trial, though her police background will be a turn-off for some.
I will admit that I would prefer Harris to any of the others mentioned. Sufficient background at local, state, and national levels. I am not opposed to her law-enforcement background. I would rather see her as VP for a term or two before taking the top job. But I think she would be more ready for the presidency, if it came open early in the next term, than many others mentioned.
Just my thoughts.

(34,136 posts)Demmings and Harris are both Representatives so we wouldn't lose Senate members - though losing a Representative is still a problem.
I've been telling my husband for months that I want our next President to be younger than us and we're both turning 68 this year. I liked Mayor Pete's youth and his policies but I did think he needed a few more governmental offices under his belt. He should run for Senator IMO, the run for president - like Barack Obama did.
We can all throw out ideas, but Joe Biden will pick who he thinks will help the ticket and do the best job.

(9,116 posts)The governor can only appoint a senator through the next statewide election, if memory serves.
There are better reasons to not pick Warren as VP, chief of which VP is a bullshit figurehead position and putting Warren there would both be an insult to and waste of her considerable talent.

(11,605 posts)The Democrats in the Massachusetts legislature changed the rule to require a special election in 2003 or 2004 to prevent Mitt Romney from appointing Kerry's replacement if he won the presidency. Which ended up biting us all in 2010 when Scott Brown won the special election for Ted Kennedy's seat, which would have otherwise been filled by someone Deval Patrick appointed.
There would be an appointed Republican senator, but only for a few months thanks to this change in the law.
