Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI heard an interesting suggestion for vice president nominee today
I was talking into a good liberal friend, going on praising Tammy Duckworth as the perfect nominee. And he suggested I look into Val Demmings. So I googled her, and OMG, she's Tammy-level awesome.
Who else should we be talking up as possibles?

(40,212 posts)I think she would be great. Val Demmings would be great. Stacy Abrams would be great. There are so many great women.
Every one of them would be a great president too!

(54,020 posts)But I don't know if we had the experience set or the national profile to warrant VP just yet. My sense is that her mission lies elsewhere right now, fighting the racist Republican voter suppression schemes that have turned the world's first national republic into what the UN calls a flawed democracy."

(16,383 posts)But between the two, Harris is more seasoned. Of course, I'd love either one. I like Duckworth, too, but there are so many WOC to choose from, especially if we are going to have another white, male prez., I'm going to be pissed if we don't have more diversity on the ticket. There's no excuse.

(7,715 posts)I didn't know her until the conviction trial, but I was captivated by her arguments. She has a lot of great potential
I also love Senator Harris, but I see her as AG.
My hands down choice for Biden's VP is Elizabeth Warren. She will unite (most of) us, and she's a heck of leader too. I cannot understand why she didn't win several states, as she is as down to earth as you get while being a former Harvard law professor. I loved her defiant attitude with Moscow Mitch and "Chief Justice" Roberts.
Liz is our "Persister Sister"!
On edit: Sorry,, in my 3rd paragraph, I meant " Warren", not "Harris" !

I have been vehemently pro Warren-for-president since the summer of 2015. But as much as I think she'd be a great vice president and ready to step up in case of an emergency or tragedy, I don't think she's the best choice for being candidate for VP.
I can see his treasury secretary. I can see her as Chair of the Fed. I think her talents lie in the executive branch more than the legislative. But as a 2nd slot candidate, I don't see what she brings to the table.
And yes, it's one of those inherently dumb things of our constitution and political culture that there is a tremendous gap between qualifications for vice president and qualifications for vice presidential candidate. Welcome to America.

(118 posts)I was stuck on Kamala Harris for a while and still would put her in the VP candidate pool with Val Demings and Stacy Abrams. I would prefer a woman of color on the ticket with Joe, but I would also put up for consideration Julian Castro and Hakeem Jeffries.

(251 posts)Biden might do a very dynamic act which can contrast his sanity and stability in comparison to this reprobate Trump and his utter depravity and his loathsome cabinet.
He should name his VP choice and cabinet and layout a 100-day healing process to fumigate the office of the Trump presidency.
Return to Global warming science and issues to the forefront of American values
Fortify and expand Obamacare( public option)
Repeal the corporate tax cut.
Fortify food stamps and other programs Trump cut
Return to the Iran nuclear deal
And rectify many other despicable acts of the Trump era
He could name prominent bi-partisan people of great statures, such as a Romney, maybe secretary of State
Kamala Harris as maybe AG and other QUALIFIED Americans of universal stature and competence to match against the Trump unqualified cabinet of incompetent ignoramuses.

(54,020 posts)Having a token secretary or two is an honorable national tradition. but I wouldn't give it to Romney and I wouldn't give the top spot in the cabinet away to a party that has wandered so far off the patriotic farm.
Put a republican on a process job like VA, or transportation, or EPA, or UN ambassador. Top policy spots like Justice, State, Defense, HUD, Interior... These gigs need to go to people from a party with a track record of putting country above politics.
These fuckers who looked the other way while Trump disrupted our Western alliances as a thank-you to Vladimir Putin, and who stayed silent while Trump threw children into cages, do not deserve a voice in healing the long-term damage they've done to the country and the planet.

(251 posts)I just mentioned Romney since he was the only decent and honest GOPer to vote to impeach the reprobate, Trump.
Or a guy like John Kasich. There are some decent anti-Trump republicans.
Any pro-Trump lackeys are OUT

(1,089 posts)I could live with someone like a Bill Weld for sure. Or somebody like a Chuck Hagel who already served under Obama. But both these guys are getting up there in years and may not need the hassle. Moderate Republicans are few and far between these days so it's not exactly like there's much of a pool to draw from.
Pretty sure Joe could randomly pick names from a phone book or a penitentiary and end up with more competent and less corrupt people than we got in there now.

(1,315 posts)He will need someone who people feel comfortable stepping in as POTUS if something happens.
It will have to be someone with government level executive experience, someone between 50-60 years old and ready to step in.
We don't want to make a political decision and get someone who is politically attractive but people don't see as stepping in. John McCain had the same problem and he chose unwisely.
