Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forum'Michigan or bust' for Sanders - and it's going to be bust.....😎💙
All the digital ink spilled about Super Tuesday is fawning over former Vice President Joe Biden and his miraculous comeback. But the fact is that Bidens winning comes down to two things. First, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is a weak candidate whose success was built on quirks in the Democratic nominating process, not on real popularity. Second, simply existing while all others fail is a winning strategy for Biden.
Lets start by establishing that the Democratic race is over. Biden will be the nominee, and he will win on the first ballot. The only chance Sanders has is if he can win the Midwest states he won in 2016 (plus the ones he didnt) which makes Michigan a must-win state for him. But it doesnt look at all favorable for him in the Wolverine State or anywhere else in the Midwest. (Raise your hand if you thought Biden would steamroll through the Democratic field just a hand or two, maybe, and lets forget February.)Sanders has one last shot: He must win Michigan and continue to win in the Midwest. But Michigan and the Midwest are very much a long shot for him, and the polling dynamic over the past two months is ominous
It is true that Sanders won Michigan in 2016, and he also won Wisconsin, Indiana and had a very close loss in Illinois. But the fact is that Sanders has yet to hold on to all his voters from 2016 and is generally falling by double-digits. Sanders cant win leaking away votes, and there is no sign of that stopping.
Sanders frontrunner status was always built on a foundation of sand. And by just hanging around while everyone else evaporates turns out to be a pretty good strategy for Biden

(3,256 posts)Another reason for the "energized young voters" to not show up at the polls.
They seem to be only energized on twitter.

(3,623 posts)It's definitely over for Sanders. Just a matter of time. I think Biden wins Michigan by at least 10 points and would not be shocked if he wins by 20ish.

(5,557 posts)If Biden wins huge and gets the overwhelming majority, it adds another challenge for Sanders. Every time Biden had a big blowout win, Bernie can't easily offset as he is not positioned for any blowouts of his own.

(3,623 posts)If he loses Michigan by double digits, that should be the end of the road for him. He will lose Mississippi by a huge amount, possibly 40-50 points. He is on pace to lose Florida by about 50 points and receive zero delegates from Florida. He desperately needs to win Michigan, but I don't think he will get what he needs. Going to be big win for Biden.

(44,228 posts)his net pickup in delegates was +4.
That's ain't gonna do him any good in 2020. He needs to start winning states by double-digit margins or the delegate allocation math gets very, very bad for him.
If he loses MI, he should drop out.

(14,764 posts)Biden is forecasted to win an average of 51% of the vote in Michigan. In 80% of simulations, he wins between 43% and 60% of the vote. He has a 3 in 4 (77%) chance of winning the most votes, much better than the second most likely winner, Sanders, who has a 1 in 4 (23%) chance.
And again, there really haven't been any/many polls since super tuesday.
