Julian Castro touts immigration plan at rally on same day Trump visits San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO — Hours after President Donald Trump made a fundraising stop Wednesday in San Antonio, the city's former mayor and a contender to challenge the president next year said the current occupant of the White House picked the wrong city to tout his hardline immigration policies.

"People in San Antonio understand the value of immigrants," said the former mayor and Obama administration Cabinet secretary, wearing an open collar and no jacket on a warm and breezy evening.

"This is a city that has been built up by immigrants and it's one of the most successful cities in the United States. It's a testament to the power of immigration over the generations."

The rally was held in the outdoor Mexico Plaza in Hemisfair Park just outside downtown San Antonio where many in the decidedly anti-Trump crowd of several hundred waved handmade placards in support of immigrants seeking refuge in the United States.

Often with his office helping one person at a time behind the scene. I have so much respect for him. He is a civil rights leader.

Their vote does not reflect their potential power, and many are conservative, but still. We need the votes of all those who would stand against the growing nationalist/white supremacist extremism on the right. Hopefully over time Castro's candidacy will make a difference.

Castro has experience in the executive branch of government, which the others lack. For that reason, he is one of the 1% candidates that deserves to rise in the polls. I hope that he meets the criteria to be included in the debates.
