One BIG reason I am still in Elizabeth's column...

I feel personally responsible for my own feminism. I feel so strongly that we MUST have a woman president (hopefully before I die), I am going to keep her spirit alive for as long as she wants to stay in the game. Get people used to having a woman have a strong voice in this long and winding road to the Convention and then to the election.

My feelings toward Joe are warm and supportive, nonetheless. Jill Biden is everything we could hope for as his First Lady (and remembrances of Michelle and Jill are still in my head). Joe is strong, decent, kind and smart. I think he will be a fine President.

And what a relief from Trump's daily assaults on our national dignity.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

37. Your information about Switzerland NOT having
Mon Mar 2, 2020, 12:08 PM

a woman president is absolutely incorrect.

Women here only got the right to vote in federal elections in 1971 although several cantons had granted them that right earlier. The last holdout canton was Appenzell in 1991.

Since that time, there have been not just one, but several. Two of them served two terms; a third just began her second term. Of course, the Swiss President only serves a one-year term and the transition is fairly calm and uneventful - nothing like the political circus in the USA.

Ruth Dreifuss - 1999
Micheline Calmy-Rey - 2007
Doris Leuthard - 2010
Micheline Calmy-Rey (for the second time) - 2011
Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf - 2012
Simonetta Sommaruga - 2015
Doris Leuthard (for the second time) - 2017
Simonetta Sommaruga (for the second time) -2020

Micheline Calmy-Rey was my personal favorite. But I like Simonetta Sommaruga as well.

I’m there myself, in age and attitude. Hoping I’ll live to see a woman president. Since Hillary I find myself fighting a gnawing sense of discouragement about it. I find myself wondering if this will play out the same way women gaining the right to vote played out. Women had to wait. Black women had to wait another 50 years after their fathers, brothers, husbands and sons were able to vote before they could, too.

I find myself wondering how many other non-white-male voting groups will get a president who looks like them, before we women achieve that level of equality. That’s probably the last hurdle to be cleared. We’ll likely have a gay (male) president, a Latino president, a Jewish (male) president, before we see a female president. I hope I’m wrong.

If voters would vote for who they feel is the best candidate instead of trying to game out the whole electability thing, she could have a strong showing tomorrow. Mon Mar 2, 2020, 11:58 AM
Mar 2020

The fact that we prefer Biden does not mean we do not respect her intelligence and hard work. Most of us really also really want a woman in the White House, which is why Biden's own supporters will be severely disappointed if he does not choose a woman for VP--one that could use the VP slot as a springboard to the Presidency.

I personally think it would be more strategic for Biden to choose a woman of color for VP, should he win the nomination, but if he did not, Warren would make a fine VP if she were so inclined and had no path to the nomination herself. She would also make a fine President--and one that I would be happy to vote for.

I voted for Hillary Clinton three times in my lifetime, and I was proud every time. I really wanted a woman in the White House, and I really did not want Trump there. The majority of Democrats voted for Hillary Clinton twice in 2016. The Democratic Party is more than ready for a woman President. It will happen, and we are all lucky to have Senator Warren be a part of the Democratic Party.
