Democratic Primaries

Bloomberg is getting his money's worth from his ads.
I generally have Food Network on the TV Saturday and SUnday mornings, that's when the "how-to" shows are on. It's also a break from politics since the political ads are rare. But this morning I've seen a variety of Bloomberg ads, about every 10 minutes.
Halfway through one that just aired, after a list of things Bloomberg "did", the question was asked "Do you want a doer or a debater?" . Clearly a fresh ad, motivated by the debate.
While I want someone else to win the nomination, I really hope Bloomberg was sincere in his statement that he would continue to put his money and support behind the Dem nominee and in opposition to MF45. His ads are excellent. His ad writers and producers deserve good bonuses.

(115,836 posts)What do you mean, Im going to send a check to somebody and theyre not going to cash the check? I think I wouldnt bother to send the check, Bloomberg, who rallied supporters in Houston on Thursday morning, said in an interview with the Houston Chronicle.

Bloomberg can keep doing what he's doing now. Run ads, support the Democratic nominee, and lay waste to MF45.

(115,836 posts)He said he'd keep his campaign offices open if a candidate wanted to use them. But if Bernie is rejecting his help, he won't. And if they dont want to use them, then fine. Then well close them.

I suppose if Bloomberg were sincere, then he'd take whatever money he would have given Sanders and add it to the money to be spent on the Senate and House. And some state legislatures.
This is really just why we need money out of elections, it puts anyone not wanting to look "bought" at a huge disadvantage.

And the people he inspired to run in 2018? Given his track record in that election, you really don't want to go there.

(5,445 posts)Doers still running:
Biden
Bloomberg
Klubuchar
Warren (consumer protection agency)
Dreamers:
Sanders
Incomplete (not enough time to evaluate):
Buttigieg
Steyer
Of these, Biden and Bloomberg probably accomplished the most and would certainly be able to get something done
Klubuchar next.
Warren has accomplished less, but her consumer protection agency is a big deal, and she has plans to get the programs on the progressive wish list--which she won't get, but she knows how to compromise to get as much as possible. That's why she's my favorite candidate.
Incompletes for Buttigieg and Steyer. Neither has been in a position to do much significantly politically.
Sanders has accomplished much less, presumably because he doesn't like to compromise. He will have to modify this approach when President, or there will be a lot of disappointed folks. The disappointment may do a lot of harm to the neo-progressive movement that he has helped grow.

(10,435 posts)I think she's accomplished a lot in her circumstances. What I like about her is that she "has a plan for that" and does such a great job of explaining herself.
Sanders is known as the "amendment king", because while he didn't claim the spotlight with bills named after him, he's worked to get amendments passed that either improved things or at least made republicon bills somewhat less harmful. That's compromise.

(5,445 posts)he was a Congressman. That is reassuring, as I don't think he will have a compliant House and Senate to deal with, though I believe he will defeat Trump should he be the nominee. If he becomes President, I want him to accomplish something significant--I'm very worried about disillusionment that would follow any Democrat being elected, but especially Bernie because he has created so much enthusiasm.

(10,435 posts)both realize that they will have to overcome republicon obstruction and dirty tricks, even if there's a complete sweep. And they should remember the problems caused by "conserva-dems" like Joe Lieberman during the passage of the ACA.
Make it clear to the public what they are trying to do, and who is standing in the way. I also think that some of the disillusionment that plagued Obama in 2010 was from constantly attempting to work with republicons and/or giving in to them. So we got a lot of enthused 2008 voters who thought, 'well that did no good' and stayed home in 2010. I sure hope every candidate has learned that's not the way to motivate the public.
