Democratic Primaries

Is Bernie being hypocritical? He is pushing an ad featuring JFK, who is about as clear of an example of an establishment Democrat as can be, even though he has said that JFK make him "physically nauseated."

America chose to go to the moon not because it was easy, but because it was hard, Kennedy argued in footage included in the 30-second clip, where Sanders states that the slain leader knew that the US gives its best before significant challenges and not small ones.
However, Sanders did not always seem so impressed with the leader's record. In an interview with a university newspaper a little over 30 years ago, on the contrary, the Democratic Vermont Senator even said that Kennedy's position about the Cuban Revolution appalled him.
"President Kennedy was elected while I was at the University of Chicago, that was 1960. I remember being physically nauseated by his speech and that doesn't happen very often. He debated Nixon on Cuba. And their hatred for the Cuban revolution, both of them, was so strong," Sanders said in a 1987 interview to Gadfly, a student newspaper at the University of Vermont.

(17,390 posts)...at Trump's comments about assaulting women, it is not a surprise that Bernie's campaign might be amused by Bernie's misrepresentation to voters that he somehow admires or aspires to be like JFK.

Bernie is not the victim. Democratic voters are. Does Bernie even have any basic decency to tell Democratic voters the truth regarding how he has elevated himself by tearing down the Democratic party, then he places an add where he misrepresents that he somehow admires or aspires to be like JFK or FDR.
I have no doubt that like you Bernie probably thinks its hilarious how he can get away with an ad that is so misleading.
Of maybe I am mistaken. Perhaps you disagree that his add is misleading. If so, then please feel free to explain.

(236 posts)During the debate with Nixon. Not that JFK as a whole was making him nauseous. Context is usually helpful. Sure Bernie's just a few hairs short of a full blown sandinista, but let's get the context right.

(713 posts)Thanks for an honest post. Bernie is a Lefty. Some people will demonize him because of this. Glad to see that there is some sane opposition out there. Definitely good to get the context right.

(17,390 posts)We are talking the Roosevelts and the Kennedys and Bernie supporters have no problem with the hypocrisy inherent in such an advertisement given Bernie's history of statements such as this:

This is why I just can't jump on the bandwagon of this cult of personality that seems to be at the heart of the Bernie campaign. Bernie attacks the establishment, then pushes an ad that glowingly portrays and compares Bernie to a Kennedy and a Roosevelt.

Some have to dig back 40 years to show his support/protest/arrest for civil rights. He was arrested while chained to an unconscious black woman!!!!!
Sad, isn't it?

(713 posts)Sanders is remarkably consistent. People have to dig back more than 30 years to find something untoward he said in a student newspaper in 1987. It is laughable. Maybe we can find an essay that he wrote in third grade where he insults George Washington?
Here is a secret- Bernie is a bit Lefty, and may have said something mildly controversial about it 30 years ago! Bernie is far from perfect, but no one is perfect. The guy has more or less had the same positions his whole life. Consistent. Could Bernie maybe disavow his old sympathies for lefty types and lefty politics? Maybe it would help his campaign, but Bernie is just stubborn and he is who he is. So even if it might help him get elected, Bernie is not going to be anyone other than who he is.
Whether people like him or not, he has stuck to his course his whole life. His principles are not cooked up in a political marketing meeting, and he does not change positions in hopes of getting more votes. He is who he is, whereas some other candidates are perhaps more changeable and prone to triangulating in hopes of a win. Sanders is sincere and consistent, whether you agree with him or not.

(713 posts)His principles and positions are consistent. The tactics that he uses to promote those principles and positions might be calculated, but the principles and positions themselves are remarkably consistent over the years. So, yes, Bernie is consistent, but he is also a pretty skilled politician. Which is a pretty decent combination in my book. I have seen a number of politicians with few or no other principles than getting elected. They change course every time the wind shifts. Bernie is not like that, whether people like his views, or not. So, you are right on target, Gravitycollapse.

(713 posts)I am not insulting you. I don't even know who you are. And people's ideas and positions might evolve and change over time. Sanders included. Still, he has been pretty consistent in his language, views, and positions for many years. No need to take that personally.

(4,364 posts)He and his followers seem to have an almost cult-like fixation for the Cuban revolution and Castro. JFK defended the United States from the likes of the murdering totalitarian dictator that was Castro. Castro wanted to nuke us. JFK ultimately saved the United States and the world from nuclear annihilation. And we hear a lot of screaming at us that the U.S. is bad and Castro with his buddies are/were good. I will not stop saying it: Castro was a murdering totalitarian psychopath. There is no net plus to his reign, just a huge amount of human suffering and blood.
And now, aren't the Bernie folk calling Bernie's campaign a "revolution?" Haven't I heard something like "join the revolution" from Bernie and his comrades? Hmmm, just add all the "revolution" revelations together, what do we have?
Rest in peace President Kennedy. And a heartfelt thank you to you and your family for your service to and sacrifice for our country.
