Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumIf Biden consistently beats Sanders in the last several primaries before the convention
I think it would give the party a legitimate basis to give Biden the nomination on the second ballot at the convention. I think this is true even if Sanders builds up a big enough lead on Super Tuesday so that he has an overall lead over Biden in delegates.
On Super Tuesday, the moderate vote will be split between several candidates, but that won't be the case with the last several primaries before the convention. Plus, voters will have had time to absorb the full implication of nominating Sanders by this summer, whereas now Sanders is still the hot and exciting item to many voters.
At some point it will become a Sanders vs. Biden two man race, and, if Biden can win those head to head matchups, I see nothing unfair about giving him the nomination, regardless of total delegate counts.

(11,989 posts)Things don't split that neatly. Notice how morningconsult has consistently found that the leading "second choice" for Biden supporters is Sanders. And in Nevada, with realignment, we saw that the supporters of many non-viable moderate candidates moved to Sanders rather than to another moderate. People choose based on many things, not just how moderate or liberal someone is. The media has come up with "lanes," but the voters aren't necessarily driving within the lines.
But yes, if it becomes a 2-person race of Sanders and a moderate, the moderate becomes the magnet not just for those for whom moderate views are paramount, but also the anti-Sanders vote, regardless of views. I'm not sure the anti-Sanders contingent is as vociferous in real life as it is on DU and among some of the party leaders.

(13,048 posts)The right wing of the Democratic Party has spent the last year trying to convince voters that Sanders is Voldemort, and all they've accomplished is to increase Sanders popularity. (And why is that, hmmmm?) Meanwhile many of them have become so invested in their bullshit that they've forgotten it is bullshit and now believe it.
