Florida Democrat likens Sanders's Cuba remarks to Trump's Charlottesville response

A Democratic Florida lawmaker is likening Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) comments about Cuban leader Fidel Castro to President Trump’s widely criticized response to the Charlottesville, Va. protests.

“Saying a murderous dictator wasn’t so bad because of a literacy program is like saying ‘there were very fine people, on both sides,’” state Sen. Annette Taddeo tweeted Monday.

Her comments included a clip of a “60 Minutes” interview in which Sanders said “it's unfair to simply say everything is bad” in regards to Castro’s authoritarian rule of Cuba.

Sanders is gong to be toxic in Florida...there’s still time to fix this mess.

That criticism and attempt at equivalence are just plain inane. That was, in truth, a very poor choice to use as a simile. It is a false equivalence, but that's only clear if you go into details about both.

Of course, the nuance in differences matter's too: "wasn't so bad" is not the same as "unfair to say everything is bad" and sounds like reading into what he did say in order to make her own point. Her rhetoric was loaded.

We could go into the role of the USA in regards to Cuba, but that's a long story and it is not going to be a mainstream commodity between commercials.

She is a state senator in Florida which has a large number of Cuban Americans. It’s not a good constituency to alienate.

Bernie could have advocated restoring more open relations with Cuba and praised their healthcare and literacy rates without saying anything about Castro.

The controversy as you say probably won’t matter nationally but may matter in Florida which is an important state in the election.

whom actually despise the folks in the new England states. That is why Clinton with all his faults was beloved here. Unfortunately Hillary, even though a Clinton was too N England to receive that love (plus no penis). If you are relying on my beloved diverse and progressive Houston to propel us through, look at Beto's campaign and think again. There are still too many yahoos and religious numbnuts (the Dems will kill babies, etc] in the rural areas to change things. You also need to know that the Catholic church feeds this same vitriolic to their Hispanic members who are think this message comes directly to them from their cleric (God).
