He's saying that to SC voters, so it makes him seem more heroic supporting civil rights in South Africa.

Joe probably figures that by the time the truth gets circulated, the SC primary will be over and his comment forgotten.

They’re stupid, because right now it sounds like a giant implausible whopper that would be easily disproved— Worse than Hillary’s sniper-fire story in Bosnia. I don’t think Joe would deliberately make something up, I think his memory is muddled.

He really expects us to believe that he, a sitting US Senator, was arrested THREE times by the SA government and there was not a single mention in any of the world's media?

Lemme guess: Reagan and Botha conspired to hush it up! Amirite?

He saying this? This is why I have trouble supporting Joe—he’s a decent man but an erratic campaigner. Edit to add—if there’s proof that supports his claim, I’ll happily accept it

The arrest of a senator would have made national news. And yet:

But if Mr. Biden, then a United States senator from Delaware, was in fact arrested while trying to visit Mr. Mandela, he did not mention it in his 2007 memoir when writing about a 1970s trip to South Africa, and he has not spoken of it prominently on the 2020 campaign trail. A check of available news accounts by The New York Times turned up no references to an arrest. South African arrest records are not readily available in the United States.

The excerpt is from the New York Times story at the link.

Perhaps he can chalk this up to the Mandela effect and make a post on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/MandelaEffect/) about how he was in a different timeline than others on this planet at the time.
