Sanders reveals free child care plan for preschoolers

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders announced on CBS' "60 Minutes" Sunday a new plan to guarantee free child care and pre-kindergarten to all American children from infancy to age 4.

Details: In the wide-ranging interview, Sanders told Anderson Cooper he planned to pay for universal child care with a wealth tax. "It's taxes on billionaires," he said.

Funding plans: Cooper pushed Sanders on how he plans to fund Medicare for All, free public college, the Green New Deal and student debt cancellation.

"Making public colleges and universities tuition-free and canceling all student debt. ... We pay for that through a modest tax on Wall Street speculation," Sanders said.
"I can't rattle off to you every nickel and every dime. But we have accounted for ... you talked about Medicare for All. We have options out there that will pay for it."

CNBC (10/29/2019) -

"Bernie Sanders doesn't plan on releasing a detailed plan of how to finance his single-payer Medicare for All plan, he told CNBC's John Harwood on Tuesday.

"You're asking me to come up with an exact detailed plan of how every American — how much you're going to pay more in taxes, how much I'm going to pay," he said. "I don't think I have to do that right now."

No answer.

WaPo (1/24/2020) -

."Independent Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders refused to give a cost estimate for his “Medicare for All” plan in a recent interview, even though he had already pegged the cost at $30 to $40 trillion in an earlier interview — with the exact same reporter."

In a recent interview with The Washington Post‘s Robert Costa, for a piece touting the “ascendant” Sanders campaign, Bernie was asked about the cost for his health care plan, but declined to give specifics:

“I don’t give a number and I’ll tell you why: It’s such a huge number and it’s so complicated that if I gave a number you and 50 other people would go through it and say, ‘Oh .?.?.” he said, his voice trailing off."

“What I appreciate more now than I did four years ago is the cruelty of the system,” Sanders said. “Last time I talked about health care as a human right … but what I see now is the cost of health care."

Didn't answer, trailed off, segued into cost of healthcare.

CBS (1/25/2020) -

“Your agenda has promised free healthcare for everybody, free college tuition, and to pay off people’s college loans,” O’Donnell said, and asked “The price tag for that is estimated to be $60 trillion dollars over 10 years, correct?”

“Well look, we have political opponents who come up…” Sanders began.

“You don’t know how much your plan costs?” O’Donnell interrupted.

“You don’t know, nobody knows, this is impossible,” Sanders said, as O’Donnell cut him off again.

“You’re going to propose a plan to the American people and you’re not going to tell them how much it costs?” O’Donnell said.

“Of course I will,” Sanders said “You know exactly what healthcare costs will be, one minute, in the next 10 years if we do nothing. It will be a lot more expensive than a Medicare for All single-payer system.”

Said 'of course I will' then didn't and segued into cost of healthcare.

CBS (2/23/2020) -

Forgot New Green Deal, didn't answer, segued midstream to Green New Deal.

'We pay for that through a modest tax on Wall Street speculation...'

2016, but plan virtually the same.

'Bernie Sanders says his free public university tuition program "is paid for … by a tax on Wall Street's speculation."

'Sanders said his free public university tuition program "is paid for… by a tax on Wall Street's speculation."

Sanders’ $75 billion proposal is a federal matching program, meaning the Wall Street speculation tax would cover two-thirds of the costs. States would be required to pick up the tab for the remaining one-third. There is some question if some states would participate in the program. Recently, states have refused to be part of Medicaid expansion under a more generous style of cost-sharing.

Sanders has a point that his proposed Wall Street tax would cover part of the plan, but he left out the significant state contribution. And it’s not a sure thing that every state would join in. So we rate his claim Mostly False.'
