(59,503 posts)It does not even matter that Bernie is Jewish and lost family in the Holocaust. I think what Matthews was speaking of was that it has been a long time since a grassroots effort, not backed by the establishment, has won the type of victory Sanders did in Nevada. (Hillary, Obama, Kerry, Gore, Bill Clinton 1992 and Dukakis all had establishment support - even if they were not the favorite.) You likely have to go back to Gary Hart to have an insurgent candidate in the primaries. However, I doubt that Matthews would use a Nazi comparison in Hart's case.
Matthews has long had a need to better filter the thoughts that come out of his mouth. I remember made many sexist (and negative) comments about Hillary in 2008, then later that year made comments on Palin being attractive. He also was completely impressed with Bush landing (no, he didn't) a helicopter on a ship before giving a speech in 2004.

(3,635 posts)which is CM's right as an opinion journalist/talking head.
There was nothing that CM said that was inaccurate or anti-Semitic.
This is all about the Berners trying to 'work the refs' and stifle critique.
Nicole Wallace, Joy and others were speaking about this the other day.

(9,116 posts)It doesn't. You don't have to hate Jews to say something anti-semitic any more than you have to hate people of color to say something racist. Never mind that bloviating gelatinous shitheel compared a man whose extended family was murdered by nazis to the goddamned nazis, he also reinforced the popular trope of the scheming Jew bent on world domination. Whether it was intentional doesn't make the slightest difference.

People make those over the top statements all the time about
Right Wingers of all backgrounds. The fact that he said it about a Jewish man makes it insensitive, but not anti-semitic

(3,635 posts)about how primaries suddenly end where one candidate is uncatchable, and how the primary process benefits factional candidates who can beat a divided field, and that he believes Sanders would get destroyed by Trump based upon the oppo research the GOP has on him.

(748 posts)It's Reynaud calling Churchill, saying "It's over."
"How can this be?"
"It's over."
But the sub-text is, Matthews could have picked any other example of a surprising victory and went with Nazis.

(748 posts)That's just dumb. He reached for an analogy without thinking.

But it's not like he suddenly showed some kind of cruel streak of bigotry or something.

(748 posts)When you use an example, you get all of that example.
If a teacher separated a class into two groups, you wouldn't say, "Just like how Mississippi used to separate black and white students."
There's an underlying meaning there that's just completely inappropriate.

(11,095 posts)Many times voices like Anands get drowned out by the rat-a-tat-tat from insider pundits. I get tired of listening to the Lets Not Ever Rock The Boat crowd. Too many of them apparently think the only way forward is a teeny little baby step....providing todays systems and paths remain intact.
People in history who have caught my attention were those who had the insight for fresh ideas and the commitment to seeing them through. We went to the moon, didnt we?

(3,635 posts)was somehow was bought by Bloomberg.
Capehart, a gay black man and highly respected journalist - was trying to explain why some black voters (like his own grandmother) support Bloomberg, that he does donate to liberal causes (like climate change), that his legacy is more complex...
Anand then got pissy and tried to imply Capehart was bought off - all because Capehart once worked for Bloomberg (which he did disclose before the segment).

(21,349 posts)It goes back to when he and Phil Donahue were arguing over our invasion of Iraq. Tweety, although he denies it today, was pro Iraq war, Donahue was anti-Iraq war. Tweety was partially responsible for getting Donahue fired.
They had news people go on Jeopardy a few years ago, anyone remember? Wolf Blitzer was the dumbest and Tweety was a close second.
I give zero credence to what Tweety says.
You bet your boots Tweety is anti-Bernie. Anyone remember during the 2015 primary when Tweety had Jonathan Capehart on and he brought an old newspaper clipping that showed Bernie fighting for minority housing. Capehart accused the person in the paper of not being Bernie, accused Bernie of lying about fighting for minority housing and Tweety agreed with him. It turns out that person in the paper was Bernie but I never heard Capehart or Tweety apologize to Bernie for smearing him on national TV.
What Tweety said about Bernie is Fox News stuff. I thought that Democrats were better than that. I don't say anything negative about any of our candidates and will "gladly" support our nominee.

(14,576 posts)A referendum on billionaires.
Bloomberg runs as incorruptible because he's a billionaire, yet has done much to contribute to the problems we have today through his work the financial industry on Wall Street.
This was very good! I did not know Joy was from CO. I like her and Rachel most among the MSNBC people, and Lawrence. And this Times guy? Pretty astute observations.
Maybe populism IS where we're headed. Maybe Bernie's political revolution IS happening. I know my family voted for Warren in the primaries because we liked her policies, which are quite close to Bernie's. I'm sick of billionaire parasites squeezing the rest of us. Tired of getting nickel and dimed. Sick of declining purchasing power. Tired of getting less for MORE in healthcare. Sick of the forever wars.
The giant tax cut, Citizens United, the utter corruption in national government - revolving doors, super pacs, lobbies, think tanks. What, I ask, and Bernie is asking, about the American people?
How does a new space force help us? Why can't we have healthcare? We pay taxes. Why can't those be used to make our lives better instead of throwing massive amounts of money at 'defense?' How come we can't have fair trade instead of free trade? Why is college so expensive, and why do our children have to become slaves to student debt just to get a degree so they can have a decent job?
Why are immigrants bad? Why do we have these concentration camps? How come prisons are now private for-profit? How does that help us? In fact, how does hatred and mistrust directed toward people of color help any of us?
And why should we be scared of a better tax code that helps us live better lives? Of expanding things like Social Security?
These questions are now, apparently, being asked much more widely in this country.
I and many of my friends have been asking these questions for decades. Now it is nice to see a wider swath of Americans asking them.
FINALLY!
