who they view as the weakess candidate, and then changes his registration back to republican in the primaries

Would that be considered "rigging?"

If I were to vote in a presidential

I presume that you meant back to R in the GE, but if the states allow it, I don't think it fits the definition of rigging. If one understands the process going in and the process is followed, it's not really "rigging", regardless of the context.

I get your point, though.

And it could work to our detriment. Say, for example, that our nominee starts dominating in the polls. People like to vote for a winner and a lot of people wait until the last minute to decide, so moderate Rs (they do exist) and Is could re-register in significant numbers late in the process and help our candidate in November.

It really works both ways. Of course, conventional wisdom is that the Rs are more likely to do it for nefarious purposes, but I don't know how we'd ever be able to determine intent.

But even for primaries, especially open ones, turnout of democrats make a massive difference. If there is massive turnout by democrats in open primaries where republicans can mark a democratic ballot, democrats can overwhelm republican attempts to ratfuck.

I still favor closed primaries. I don't understand why people that normally vote with democrats want to list themselves as independents. When they register in the party, they can join local democratic Comittees and start working their way up to the state and national level, helping to make changes along the way.
