Congratulations to our presumptive Democratic nominee, Joe Biden!
Look to KY 99 as a bellwether of the Sanders effect
Last edited Sun Feb 23, 2020, 11:40 PM - Edit history (1)
There is a special election on Feb. 25, for a Ky legislative seat -- KY House seat 99. It was the seat held by Rocky Adkins, a democrat and the minority leader, who has since become an advisor for Governor Beshear. This seat has been a democratic party hold for years. Adkins was able to hold the seat in the 2016 Trump election year defeating his Republican opponent by 20+ percent. Again it has been reliably democratic. Currently, the Republican contender is campaigning against the democrat labeling him a Sanders socialist. The democrat is a conservative pro-life democrat that fits this legislative district. Anecdotally, people are saying that the Republican attacks are making hits and could possibly swing this reliably democratic seat to the Republicans.
On the national scene, Ky is not in play for electoral votes: we realize that. But it matters who is at the head of the ticket. They can either boost or drag the down-ticket races down. I hope the democratic candidate in KY 99 candidate survives. There is margin for error but even a close race will indicate the impact that a Sanders-lead election could have.
