In 60 Minutes interview, Sanders goes out of his way praise elements of Castros reign of Cuba.
Were very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but its unfair to say everythings bad. When Castro came into office you know what he did? He had a literacy program.

Its been my experience that Cuban immigrants who escaped Castros brutality do give Castro a lot of credit for his literacy program.

It is alienating. And depressing.
Mayor Buttigieg was right when he said Bernie wants to burn it all down.

Communism does some things uniquely well. It doesn't mean we're embracing it.
Granted, in Bernie's case, the optics aren't great.

(9,118 posts)Most of those still-resentful emigres are from countries like Cuba and Venezuela, NOT China. It was the Marxist governments of Cuba and Venezuela that drove them to choose exile, not the Peoples Republic oh China.

(9,118 posts)Saying nice things about Marxist-socialist states social welfare states was quite common among the liberal left during that time period and, if Im not mistaken, Mr. Sanders was still on good terms with the Socialist Workers Party back then.
That such blasts from the past havent already been aired is a mystery, unless it shows a decency and restraint that other Democratic politicians possess that Republicans most certainly do not.
I am concerned that (A) the puppies-and-unicorns faction of Bernies followers hadnt thought about the political implications of Mr. Sanders remarks being replayed and (B) that theyre willing not only to write off Florida but also other areas of the country where old Cold Warriors reside and who are becoming disgusted with Donnie and Republican politicians becoming willing Russian asserts, despite the fact that Democrats will need all the votes we can get.
Hey, Bernie-philes, heres a heads-up! You all may have pluralities for three states in a Democratic primary. It doesnt necessarily follow that youll have a majority of the votes to bring your guy across the finish line in November or that hell get working majorities in the House of Representatives and the US Senate.
If the Good Guys dont get enough votes, the Bad Guys winand bad things happen.

(2,760 posts)not any one person, country, way of thought, philosophy, whatever, is all bad or all good. You don't have to fully support Castro to know that he did good things for Cuba. No matter who backs literacy programs, it's a good thing. So is Cuba's health care system. To ignore that is to close your mind to reality.

I've lived in FL since 1990. Latinos are not a monolith, but the idea that praise for Castro won't make a difference is just not realistic.

it's not that he said one nice thing about Castro though. it's that he felt the need to defend Castro at all. Why not just say he was a brutal murderer and completely distance yourself from him?
It makes you wonder what else he might say during the time between now and November. It would be really great to have your democratic nominee cast some praise on Stalin during a debate or something. Hell, there are Republicans who would fit pretty well in Fascist Italy, but they know not to say even sort of good things about Mussolini.

I'll see if I can watch it online.
That will be used in the GE against him. He's got to tamp down some of his more provocative thoughts. Stop, think - and keep his eye on the prize. That statement will not play well not only in Florida, but east of Albany, Central Rural NJ, Pennsyltucky, etc. etc.

(42,333 posts)Some here seem to forget that most voters don't pay as much attention as we politics junkies do. They watch TV and see ads, ads, ads, ads.
We've seen Bloomberg's poll numbers rise as a result. Do they really think the Rs aren't going to be running this clip 24/7?
