James Clyburn Warns Against Sanders: Democrats Will Have 'Real Burden' Selling a Socialist in SC

Mediaite article with video:

https://www.mediaite.com/tv/james-clyburn-warns-against-bernie-sanders-democrats-will-have-real-burden-selling-a-socialist-in-south-carolina/

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) reacted to Senator Bernie Sanders’ Nevada caucus win by warning that a “socialist” will face an uphill battle in his state’s upcoming primary.

Speaking to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on Sunday, Clyburn acknowledged that the results in Nevada will have an impact on the race, but he said the demographics of South Carolina’s electorate will provide a clearer picture than the primaries that have happened so far. Clyburn went on to play coy about who he would endorse, and said South Carolina could be a “make or break” state for Joe Biden’s candidacy.

Eventually, Stephanopoulos asked whether Sanders’ expanding coalition is having an impact in South Carolina, and “do you think it could put the House majority in danger?”

“A lot of people think so,” Clyburn answered.

-snip-

And now there's newspaper evidence from the 1970s quoting Sanders saying he didn't mind being called a communist.

I guess we will have to see if an organized Republican effort to alter the outcome of the SC Democratic primary a) actually exists and b) has any discernible impact.

But really they just need to say they are doing this. The real intention is to sow discord and confusion within our party, and they don’t have to bother with doing anything at all on primary day.

Sun Feb 23, 2020, 04:35 PM
Feb 2020

That seems to be far more relevant at this point, unless one is frantically trying to prophylactically dismiss a pretty certain primary failure of one's candidate. The GE involves Republicans voting after the Democrats have chosen the nominee, so that's not really relevant in terms of the chances of someone becoming the nominee, which is where we are now, is it?

Here you go...

1992 (March 7): Bill Clinton (63%), Paul Tsongas (18%), Tom Harkin (7%), Jerry Brown (6%), uncommitted (3%), and others (2%)[9]
1996: Primary cancelled
2000 (March 9): Al Gore (92%) and Bill Bradley (2%)[10]
2004 (February 3): John Edwards (45%), John Kerry (30%), Al Sharpton (10%), Wesley Clark (7%), Howard Dean (5%), and Joe Lieberman (2%)[11]
2008 (January 26): Barack Obama (55%), Hillary Clinton (27%), and John Edwards (18%)[12]
2012 (January 28): Barack Obama (unopposed)
2016 (February 27): Hillary Clinton (73%) and Bernie Sanders (26%)
