Daily Kos, Feb. 22, 2020. 'Chris Matthews Has Lost His Mind,' by Pierretrudeau.
This will be a short diary. Once again Im gobsmacked listening to Chris Mathews compare the Bernie Sanders movement to a communist takeover. Conflating social democracy with communism. This is a man who has hosted a political talk show in prime time for the past few decades and he really doesnt know the difference between those two things.
Tonight he compared the Sanders win in Nevada to the Nazi takeover of France (ignoring, of course, the vast difference between Nazism and communism) These comments aimed at a Jewish man whose family barely survived the Holocaust. Im without words.
This completely ignores the fact that one of your greatest Presidents was a social democrat (Roosevelt) and saved your economy from the Great Depression through social democratic policies. It also ignores the fact that some of the worlds most successful countries are social democracies (e.g. Scandinavia). Mathews reaction to that was that no-one knows who the Prime Minister of Denmark is. It is to weep.
I come from a country with a strong social democratic tradition (Canada). It has given us universal healthcare, a strong public education system and a sound social services. Someone needs to get this lunatic off the air. The amount of pubic brainwashing in the US is already too overpowering and this nonsense makes it worse. A clip from tonight.

*WATCH* Min 1:48, 'Fall of France' summer 1940, Nazis takeover France.
- HUFFPOST, 'MSNBC's Chris Matthews Compares Bernie Sanders Winning To The Nazis Taking France,' Amanda Terkel, Feb. 22, 2020. Sure, those two things are the same.
Cable news has been incredulous that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) could actually be the Democratic nominee for president, twisting itself into knots to convince itself that its not so. On Saturday, as results rolled in showing that Sanders was winning the Nevada caucuses, there were horrified reactions and doomsday warnings about Sanders getting the nomination.
The most jaw-dropping came from MSNBC host Chris Matthews, who said he was reading about the fall of France to the Nazis in 1940, and it reminded him of what was going on with Sanders appearing more likely to win the nomination. Im reading last night about the fall of France in the summer of 1940, and the Gen. [Louis] Renault calls up [British Prime Minister Winston] Churchill and says, Its over. And Churchill says, How can it be? You got the greatest army in Europe. How could it be over? He said, Its over. So I had that suppressed feeling, Matthews said.

Sanders spokesman Mike Casca tweeted after the segment that he never thought part of my job would be pleading with a national news network to stop likening the campaign of a jewish presidential candidate whose family was wiped out by the nazis to the third reich. but here we are.
After Sanders strong showing in the Iowa caucuses, Matthews also expressed his skepticism of socialists, wondering whether Sanders would like to see people executed in Central Park. In a similar vein, during the New Hampshire primary ― which Sanders also won ― MSNBC host Chuck Todd read an article asking whether Sanders supporters were akin to Nazis.
On Saturday, MSNBC had a 10-minute interview with Democratic strategist James Carville, who was most known for his work with Bill Clinton in the 1990s. He was most recently a supporter of Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), who dropped out of the presidential race this month after failing to gain any significant momentum. Carville spent a good chunk of his interview attacking Sanders..
During the New Hampshire primary, a woman told MSNBC that while she was a fan of the network, she was so fed up with their coverage of Sanders that she was going to vote for him for that reason alone...

(40,220 posts)I can understand that he is worried about Sanders becoming the nominee, but that was completely out of line. Nothing should ever be compared to the Nazi occupation of Europe. Analogies like that are an affront to the victims of WWII.

(41,174 posts)is less than I expected, and in comments about the 'Fall of France' he's not as worked up as I've seen him before when he becomes excited but it's still way out of line. Chris needs to THINK more, and react less in his commentaries, esp. with sensitive topics like fascism in WWII and the Holocaust.

I don't know who that Terkel is but she's shit stirring. I've listened to the segment supplied and he's talking about the Fall of France and the moment where Renault knows the game is up.

(45,120 posts)"That all-important Moderate Lane! Who's winning the Moderate Lane"
According to MSNBC Bernie is winning that lane. Not by much, but Bernie is winning among NV voters who identify as Moderate-to-Conservative. I think they said it was with today's votes, not early voting.
"We gotta have an alternative to Bernie! He's walking away with it! The alternative doesn't have to be a moderate, it could be Warren!" and so on.
I think he must think Bernie's the only person on the ballot. There are plenty of moderates on the ballot. The people just don't want his moderate crap.

Tweety also said 4 more years of Trump would be better for the Dem Party than to be altered under a Sanders presidency.
