Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumPlease spare me the outrage about the "establishment" comment.
Everyone knows that (A) there is such a thing as the "Democratic establishment" and (B) the Democratic establishment doesn't want Bernie to be the nominee.
If you doubt that, run a google search, and you'll find a dozen articles about how the Democratic establishment is worried about Bernie's rise and thinking about ways to stop it. Go ahead, try it. You'll see.
Another thing we all know is that the "Democratic establishment" doesn't refer to the whole Democratic party, or to rank-and file Dem voters like me. The establishment consists of people like James Carville, who recently called Bernie a "communist."
Bernie isn't being "disloyal" or whatever for point out things that everyone already knows and are widely reported in the media. Give me a break.

(22,913 posts)There is a "Stop Bernie" movement whether or not you want to acknowledge it. And those most convinced that "Bernie must be stopped" are not afraid to acknowledge that fact. It's a part of politics, and whether or not those who are "well established" in positions of influence within the Democratic Party are right to want Bernie stopped, it is foolish to deny they exist. Would you feel better if the phrase "the leadership of" was used instead of "the establishment of"?
Whatever views you or I hold we probably don't belong to any establishment inside the Democratic Party, even though I just retired as a Democratic Committeeman. That doesn't mean there isn't one. Call them opinion shapers, call them leaders, call them power brokers, call them "influential", call them "well networked", call them anything you want: They exist. That doesn't necessarily make them wrong but, for better or worse, it does make them disproportionately powerful.

(50,955 posts)one that wants to stop every other candidate. The group that wants to stop Bloomberg is probably the most vocal and biggest.
None of those candidates resorts to the persecution claims that BS is constantly throwing at Democrats.
For 5 years, he has been claiming victimhood. And all the while he has been the one trashing the party and creating drama and division within the party.
The Democratic establishment consists of Nancy Pelosi and John Lewis and Biden and Obama and Stacy Abrams and Eliot Engel. These are people who represent ME. I am the Democratic establishment whether you deem that I should think that way about myself or not.
When BS insults them and trashes them and dismisses them and acts as if they are just as much his enemy as republicans, he offends all of us. He trashes all of us.
This semantic spin is weak and I suspect you know it. If BS wants not to be seen as claiming victimhood, he needs to stop acting like a victim of the "Democratic establishment." It's old, it's obnoxious, and it's self-aggrandizing.

(22,913 posts)and I suspect you know it. You may well believe that the Democratic Establishment represents you well, and that it has your full support, that it has fully earned it,and that it is a legitimate extension of your own political belief system. Nothing wrong with any of that. It is a lot larger than a few dozen well known voices, it includes some political strategists, some political pundits, most State Democratic Party Chairpersons, many elected Democrats, most major Democratic donors, etc, Again there is nothing wrong with that. Maybe you too have out sized influence within the Democratic Party and I'm just unaware of it. Could be. I however do not.
There was a Democratic Political Establishment in place prior to Bill Clinton running for President proclaiming "an end to the era of Big Government" and Clinton and his allies defeated that Democratic establishment. And another one then formed modeled more closely to Clinton's ideas. Such things happen. It may or may not happen again soon.

I understand older people who get too comfy over time, and I understand younger people who want to change things. And change requires, often, throwing out the old.
I get it. But it requires wisdom to determine what things need to be thrown out, and that comes with age. Nobody is born wise.
So Establishment Democrat is a poor description of the inefficient management bureaucracy that plagues every institution. And linking candidates as champions of a mindless U.S. Government bureaucracy just perpetuates a stereotype of U.S. government workers echoed by Putin cutouts.

😆 Too funny!
Aside from the obvious 1960's slang which bugs me (need a "revolution" to get rid of the "establishment", how heavy man!), insulting your natural allies is just bad form.
FYI Bernie IS a member of the "political establishment" right now and has been for decades. James Carville is not. He is a democrat. He is on our side. Who else shall we kick out of our tent because they dare criticize someone's choice?
Speaker Pelosi is very much inside the so called "democratic establishment." What a worse world it would be if she were not.
You are right Bernie's thin skin isn't disloyalty. He is NOT a democrat, after all.
Nevertheless, Bernie's & his campaign's thin skin for criticism and repeated pattern of making perfection the enemy of the good is a problem-- that is if you actually want to see progress in this country.

(464 posts)I'm so frikkin' sick and tired of people putting down the very populist and very popular message that Bernie Sanders is giving our voice to.
And anybody that thinks the media isn't putting that message down, just probably doesn't believe in we the people. Because we the people is his message.

He needs to fully become part of the party or go away and do this on his own. The party provides tools for candidates but reqires something in return.

(37,152 posts)Americans were desperate enough to fall for a con man as vile as Trump.
Establishment Dems made sure Big Pharma was protected when they held the WH and both houses of Congress, and made a million excuses about why a public option was asking too much. Establishment Dems are all in on wars for profit, and have no problem using taxpayer money to fund their contractor friends (and sometimes family). Establishment Dems dragged ass on issues from climate change to lgbtq rights - holding their fingers to the corporate winds instead of leading.
I could go on and on about what I learned in over 40 years as a Dem activist - but Im beyond sick of establishment Dems. They drop a few more crumbs for the American people than the establishment of the other party, but often put corporate donors first. And thats why Bernie said what he did - the truth is not always pretty.
