Occam's Razor

The explanation that requires the least assumptions is usually correct. Russia wants to help re-elect Donald Trump and they are trying to sow discord and choose the weakest opponent for him. They might be wrong on the latter but that is where we are.

You're running a campaign, so who would you prefer to be up against, a strong opponent or a weak opponent?

This should be so obvious...

I don't think they are fans of Cheato.

Whatever deal he had with them he reneged on as he does alll of his deals.

He has been really tough on Russia.

They were dumb enough to back him last round. Don't think they are doing it again.

I think it's more in line with thevexacta box theory, but modified. In that one part of the box pays BIG, the other part is a push with just the big going to the bookie. What I'm saying , as tough as Cheato has been with Russia, he's the devil they know.

Trump has done more to undermine the post WW ll liberal democratic order in the West than all the work of their predecessors combined.

America's reputation among our allies has never been lower:

A year after global opinion of the United States dropped precipitously, favorable views of the U.S. remain at historic lows in many countries polled. In addition, more say bilateral relations with the U.S. have worsened, rather than improved, over the past year. Among possible sources of resentment is the widespread perception that the U.S. does not consider the interests of other countries when making foreign policy decisions. More generally, relatively few see the U.S. stepping up more to solve international problems.

America is/was the leader of the liberal democratic order. It's reputation as that leader is in tatters. That emboldens our enemies, primarily authoritarian ones. That's logic. That's flawless logic and more and bigger and newer missiles doesn't change it. The threat to liberal democracy is not from the outside. It is from within.
