'Nobody should be touched in a way they dont want to be, man or woman. But while sexual or aggressive touching is clear violation, a lot of everyday physical contact is just part of being human. Vilifying Joe Biden for literally reaching out to connect leads to labeling all spontaneous physical gestures of consolation, affection or support as wrong or creepy and we should think about what that means.
Its easy to set up a standard that every touch infringes on anothers inviolable space which forces suppression of any instinctive gesture as possibly offensive. Are we now going to claim someone made us uncomfortable every time they touch our arm? Anyone who has taken a New York City subway at rush hour has had people waaaaay closer.'>>>

(9,435 posts)nanny when we go to a restaurant with her like so many others do - she's involved in the conversation and does just great. I've paid for her to be in Montessori for nearly two years to have her develop interpersonal people skills - not sit in front of a 70inch screen watching YouTube little kids toons all day. I have a sore neck from shaking my head so much these days.

(1,351 posts)I watched a bit of Joe Biden's speech this morning and there was one light moment where he hugged one of several kids he brought on stage. Before he hugged him he made a light-hearted joke about having gotten permission to hug them. The joke was said in more of a self-deprecating way, sort of like "I've listened and I'm being careful", not out of sarcasm or making light of the women who have come out about being made to fill uncomfortable. It was a non-moment.
But, of course, our media had to see this as an opportunity to continue to fan the flames.
CNN:
"Biden jokes about physical contact after accusations he made women uncomfortable".
ABC News:
"Biden brushes off accusations with a joke". (WTF???? Biden didn't "brush off" anything!)
CBS News:
Joe Biden: "I had permissions to hug" Union Leader
Really? Seriously??? I saw the press conference myself. Joe wasn't "brushing off" or joking about anything. This is his first speech since the accusations; he hugs two people and--before doing so--he says "I got their permission". Of course, he has to say something because he knows everyone is thinking and talking about his hugging, etc. Imagine if he hugged those people and didn't say anything? There would STILL be headlines but this time they'd say something like "Joe Biden continues with his physical contact despite accusations"
Ugh...

(1,477 posts)walking back to our hotel from a restaurant. There was a group of teenage boys and girls walking together and there was not a cell phone to be seen. They were talking, laughing and interacting. Now I think how sad it is that I have to recall that particular scenario to get a bit of normalcy.
