"You Tell Me You Can't Vote for Him?": Eddie Glaude Calls Out GOP Strategist

for Never Bernie Hypocrisy

Princeton University professor Eddie Glaude on cable news network MSNBC on Tuesday morning called out former Republican strategist Steve Schmidt for hypocritically insisting that President Donald Trump represents a crisis of democracy—but that Schmidt would not vote for Sen. Bernie Sanders if Sanders got the Democratic nomination.

"If Donald Trump is the emergency that you say he is, and the Democratic Party puts forward Bernie Sanders, and you tell me you can't vote for him, then it seems to me that Donald Trump isn't the emergency that you say he is," Glaude said in response to Schmidt's pleas that the Democrats nominate someone that Republicans could vote for.

Schmidt, in response, said that Sanders is promising "free everything," a reference to the Vermont senator's plans to tax the rich to pay for social services like healthcare and student loan forgiveness. Host Stephanie Ruhle pushed back, calling that charge unfair.

(snip)

On Tuesday, Glaude had had enough.

After his MSNBC appearance, the Princeton professor took to Twitter to remind voters that GOP concern over Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, is hard to reconcile with the party's overuse of the term in recent years.

Appreciate the way many pre-Trump GOPers have joined the resistance, but they helped get us to the point that it was possible for the Russians to steal it. Manafort, Stone, etc. are all long-time GOP operators, they just finally hit the bottom of the barrel.

Someone that trotted out Sarah Palin can vote for anyone currently in the Dem primary without hiding their face.

Maybe it’s more like another way to start leveling the playing field.

Nobody seems to have a problem with all the “free stuff” the rich get. Free tax cuts, mainly, that’s a massively BIG advantage in and of itself. Sweet deal for those who can afford to pitch in a little more so that those who don’t qualify for such advantages can have at least part of a fair shake...

Give me a g'damned break! Of course not. He has to negotiate with Congress, and if we don't take the Senate, you can forget ANYTHING passing through. He will be forced to using "executive orders", which is becoming a farce. I'm not at all comfortable with that. MORE fighting and feuding in a lop sided reich wing judiciary. Forget that idea.

We NEED to take the Senate!! It will be nice to be rid of this complete con artist and idiot that is screwing our government daily and embarrassing our nation internationally every time he or his surrogates represent our nation around the world, but that's only the tip of the pimple. This goes MUCH deeper!!

Remember President Obama? Remember how he BARELY got the AOC through? Remember how Moscow mitch prevented him from getting damned near anything else accomplished? Remember how he used "executive orders" to push agenda forward that stood zero chance in the GOPutin Senate (and House)?

We HAVE TO clean out everyone of the vulnerable GOPutin puppets from the Senate, and continue to add more seats in the House. That is just as important as who sits on the throne in the White House, IMHO. I'm for anyone of the choices....Bloomberg being my LEAST favorite. But if we don't sweep in the Senate, Bernie or Elizabeth, or even Joe can forget about getting anything of substance passed.

I find it quite ironic that a simple word (Socialism/Socialist) scares the crap out of so many, yet Trump's racism/bigotry platform still has quite the strength and support to win a presidential election in this country?

Obviously – America is still living in the good old days of the 1950’s.

An American can’t run and win a national election as a flaming liberal, yet one who’s values mirror that of say….”David Duke” has a lot better chance.

That should become a bumper sticker..."If you tell me that getting trump out of office is an emergency and you cannot vote for Bernie Sanders then trump is not the emergency you call."...OK, too long for a bumper sticker.

Nonetheless it is a meme that should move around non other than DU, and maybe we can stop the bickering going on by supporters of other candidates.

Yeah, yeah, some are going to say, "well, its Sanders supporters that are doing it first"...OK, so the solution is to attack instead of staying quiet and allowing them to simmer down? It has to stop somewhere, right?

Declining to vote for Sanders is tantamount to washing your hands of the entire Trump mess and shrugging your shoulders. Regardless of whatever frightens or bothers you about Sanders, he will stay within the confines of the constitution. If he mucks things up (and I don't think he will) there'll be another election in 4 years. If Trump wins re-election, there won't be.

July, 2016:

“ Perhaps the most persuasive reason to vote for Hillary Clinton is Donald Trump. Trump is worse. I know that. The prospects of a Trump presidency—what would be a deadly combination of arrogance and ignorance—ought to frighten anyone. It frightens me. But my daddy, a gruff man who has lived all of his life on the coast of Mississippi, taught me that fear should never be the primary motivation of my actions. It clouds your thinking, and all too often sends you running to either safe ground when something more daring is required, or smack into the danger itself.

Many, despite what I’ve written, will still vote for Clinton. I do not fault them—especially if they live in a hotly contested state like Ohio or Florida. Vote for Clinton to keep Trump out of office. I completely understand that. But I can’t vote for her.”

https://time.com/4402823/glaude-hillary-clinton/

October, 2018:

“I was critical of Hillary Clinton and get hemmed up on Twitter every day for criticizing Donald Trump because people believe I'm responsible, in part, for Donald Trump being in the White House. What I did wrong in 2016 is I overestimated white people. I didn't think white people would put him in office.”
