Without mentioning any policies, make the case for your candidate

The Presidency isn't a policy job, and Presidents almost never make policy decisions. The kind of fine-grained policy fights we have in this forum would make a lot more sense being asked of potential Senate candidates. Even with executive orders, Presidents don't write them: they hire the people who hire the people who hire the people who write them.

So, without mentioning any policy issues, make the case for your candidate.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

He has a genuine need to serve, to be useful.

He loves people and wants to see them happy and secure in their lives and livelihoods.

He sees the division wracking our country and he wants to bring people together, to heal them and show them that they all belong here.

I'm sure there's more but that's all I can come up with for now.

...and bring it back from the near democratic (small d) death that we have experienced by failing to turn out for Hillary and prevent this Trump disaster.

He is a good person, his heart is in the right place, he will be a calming influence after years of this tumultuous presidency, and he is best equipped to run the country given his close cooperation with Obama as his vice president.

They can tell that there’s something sinister and dangerous about him, and they are right. Naturally, they are suspicious and growl at him. Can you blame them?

His belief that he can unite the country. Work across the aisle.

Sorry, but we’re at war. Nobody’s going to unite the country, at least not in the near future. And it’s naïve to think otherwise.

This is trench warfare. And we need a warrior in the WH. And that’s the main reason I support Elizabeth Warren.

Joe will get my vote if he gets the nomination. Anyone running will. But I hope against hope that Liz gets the nod. We need her.

They may not literally write the legalese, but they can direct the staff to create the EO to accomplish what they want (within the limits of what can be accomplished via EO), so I question at least that much of the premise. As for congressional legislation, they at least have a huge pulpit from which to steer the conversation.

That said, there are also non-policy reasons I like Warren. I think she is among the smartest of the candidates, while also coming across as having real heart, not just brains. She has fewer things in her past that can be used against her compared to some of the other candidates. And it would be nice to have a female president, even if for no other reason than to remove "we've never had a female president" as a central point of contention in the future.

I think it is also largely up to the president to decide whether or not the criminal actions of the past president are swept under the rug. Ford pardoning Nixon, Bush 41 pardoning those involved in Iran-Contra, Obama insisting that we "look forward as opposed to looking backwards" despite acknowledging that "we tortured some folks"... Seriously? This elimination of the consequences of misusing possession of probably the greatest power on earth is how we eventually get to a president like Trump. I think Warren has been most vocal about not ignoring what has happened under Trump. I don't know, maybe this qualifies as a policy issue, but either way, it matters.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Biden -- warm, familiar, a good man. Will get the crossover nostalgia vote.

Bloomberg -- so fuckin' rich.

Buttigieg -- different enough to be interesting, mainstream enough to be familiar; might nab some crossover in the Midwest.

Sanders -- Could really capture enough of the chaos vote to make it happen. Or, because he'd be going against a not-weak incumbent, would utterly crash.

Warren -- would build a killer Cabinet. I mean oh my god.

Klobuchar -- seen as likeable and familiar; Republicans vote for her.

Steyer -- also rich, but not as much of an asshole, I don't think?

My preferred candidate is intelligent, thoughtful, articulate, married, faithful, a veteran, a Midwesterner, inspiring, energetic, optimistic, and young. The past 60 years of history show us that Democrats win when we nominate someone who is young, energetic, and optimistic (JFK, Carter, Clinton, Obama).

I think he’s the unity candidate we need. As an added bonus, he speaks Spanish.

Became the most effective legislator of her generation because she understands all of the power centers and has the ability to use their self interest to divide opposition and gain temporary allies. She does that by understanding that there are real people behind the numbers on the spreadsheet and a person behind the pixels.
