Washington Post-The press can't let Sanders duck the hard questions

Through much of the 2016 campaign, the press maintained a glaring double standard. Since then-candidate Donald Trump was, well Trump, he was rarely grilled on his policy notions (where’s your fabulous health-care plan? why should we believe you have one?), confronted with his outright lies or quizzed face to face on his finances. If a reporter had the audacity to ask a question, Trump would shy away and no follow-ups would be forthcoming.

The same pattern now repeats itself with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). He is indulged, allowed to skip by details, avoid probing and evade hard policy questions. We’d like to hear him pinned down, not permitted to move to the next topic without answering queries such as these:

You promised over a month ago to release your tax returns. Why haven’t you? You say you just need to fix a few things, but aren’t past tax returns completed? Why does it take over a month to get them posted online? What things do you need to fix?

You shut down a foundation recently. What percentage of donations were used to pay your son and other family members? How much did you take in? What was spent on programs? Who were your major donors?....

There are a number of good questions in this article that need to be asked but the 4 paragraph rule applies
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

From the article. Sanders needs to tell us

What are your top legislative accomplishments in the Senate?

What did you fail to do on the 2016 campaign that allowed female staffers to be harassed? How could you not have known what was going on? If you couldn’t run an harassment-free campaign, why should voters think you can run an administration free from harassment?

Isn’t it time for the Democratic Party to nominate a woman for president? Why don’t you support one of them?

When will we see your medical records? You will be 79 years old on Election Day 2020. Isn’t there a legitimate concern you’ll be too old to serve and/or complete your term?
If I were to vote in a presidential

Really? Rubin thinks it's time for Democrats to nominate a woman for President? Pretty sure we just did that 2 years ago. Maybe she meant Republicans.

How about Bernie writes his own medical report on himself like your Emperor did? Would that suffice?

As to harassment, I distinctly recall him telling his staffers not to grab anyone by the pussy. He has also never paid hush money to porn stars or Playboy models.

You do realize that sanders will be vetted this cycle? No one took sanders seriously last cycle and so he was not vetted. Vetting is important I am so glad that sanders is being vetted this cycle https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/01/28/why-bernie-sanders-has-an-uphill-climb-ahead/?utm_term=.1b4f90c2a717

Finally, what happens when the oppo dump on Sanders comes? We have no idea, because it never happened in 2016. Clinton was so terrified of alienating his supporters and seeing them vote for Jill Stein in the general election (or not vote at all) that she tiptoed around him for pretty much the entirety of the primary campaign. That doesn’t mean that he’ll be destroyed when stories about the more colorful aspects of his history start cropping up, but there’s just no way to know.

Which is what we could say about the Sanders candidacy as a whole: There’s no way to know how it’s going to go. But he’s got his work cut out for him.

See also https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/19/politics/bernie-sanders-2020-campaign-donald-trump/index.html?utm_source=twCNNp&utm_content=2019-02-20T14%3A52%3A07&utm_term=image&utm_medium=social%C2%A0

2. How will he withstand more scrutiny and more attacks?
One of the secrets to Sanders' success in 2016 was that no one -- most especially Clinton -- thought he had any chance of going anywhere in the race. Clinton largely ignored him for the better part of 2015, allowing some problematic parts of Sanders' record for Democrats -- most notably his voting record on guns -- to go unnoticed. (When the race began to tighten, Clinton gently prodded Sanders on guns and health care.) Sanders, too, largely flew under the radar of investigative reporters for major news outlets who were busy looking into Clinton, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and others seen as more viable candidates. (That reality clearly benefited Donald Trump in the early days of the campaign, as well.)

Sanders will get no pass -- from either the media or his fellow candidates -- this time around. He is among the frontrunners -- and will be treated as such. His wife's time as president of Burlington College could well come up. And his opponents will do a deep dive into his nearly 30 years of votes as a member of the House and Senate. This is all very normal stuff in a campaign. But not for Sanders.

Vetting is part of the process

People who want to shield candidates - especially their favorite - from answering questions by claiming "this is from a repub and only Democrats can ask Democats questions" - are doing a disservice to both voters and the candidate. Rest assured the repubs will be comign with difficult questions in the general and the Dem nominee has to be ready for it. Trying to creat a "safe space" for Democratic candidates in the primaries is a sure way to lose the general.

So to call her a right wing source is disenguous at best. I want to know all we can about the candidates. If a serious commentator like Rubin who wants tRump out of office as much as any of us has some factual, legitimate questions for Dems it would be good to listen so we don't get caught up only hearing what we want about our candidates and then get blindsided in the general. It is a good way to lose just like in 2016.

Worse in your response is blaming juries here who don't vote the way you tell them they should. Maybe you just don't want your candidate to answer tough questions. The repubs won't be that nice in the general.

Didn't his supporters go ballistic when it turned out Democratic party members asked him questions at his town hall? They dragged out their 'rigged' narrative again when people in D.C. who worked for the Democratic party dared to go to his town hall and ask him questions he and they didn't like.

It seems to me that Senator Sanders' supporters don't want him vetted at all - no questions for Bernie! Just let him talk uninterrupted and without any challenges, I guess.

When the Repukes denied her a position in the CPB, that she formed, our President asked her to run for the Senate.

I recall someone sitting 12+ hours before hostile republicans in Congress, and had no problem dealing with it or answering questions.

Anyone can talk in sound bites and generalities, but it is when you are asked SPECIFIC questions, that is what separates someone who is qualified verses someone who isn't as qualifed

and when a supporter is asked a question, should a candidate be asked tough questions, and instead of answering that question, they defensively respond with criticism about Bezos, or that an OP Ed is from a republican, which is irrelevent to the BASIC QUESTION, and that is, SHOULD A CANDIDATE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT BE ASKED TOUGH QUESTIONS?

The answer only requires a binary response, YES or NO.

We will be shown polls of a questionable origin that "show" that Bernie and only Bernie can beat Trump in the 2020 General. You see how the right-wingers--and the morbidly obese pussy-grabber himself--are going after Biden and of all people Crypt Keeper Kellyann has the nerve to talk about Biden's "Creepy Uncle Joe Videos." She defends a nasty-ass, sexually assaulting raping (Ivana) hog in tRump. The hog touches and kisses his own DAUGHTER in a nasty, disgusting and non-father like filthy way. Allows the likes of Stern and Simmons to talk to HIM about his daughter in a sexual manner. Hog said himself that if Ivanka wasn't his kid, he'd do her, er, I mean date her. Yeah, I've noticed Biden's "hands on behavior" for a while now. Even said to myself YIKES when he touched that biker woman in that diner a few years back. But, if you think the way that many on the right/corporate media, and even some Dems are trying to take him down, I feel strongly that the 1972 essay Bernie wrote will be getting a TON of exposure, and we know thuglicans will go into overdrive with it. I wouldn't be surprised of hog-in-chief didn't say that Bernie said at one of his rallies that "Bernie likes the idea of women being raped." You know how tRump puts HIS sins (Fatso raped Ivana) on others. I can see hoggie, many in the corporate media, and thuglicans going on and on about that 1972 essay, forcing Bernie to answer WHY he wrote it, and if Bernie/his camp don't answer that question correctly, then well I'm no Bernie-hater, but if he's having this much trouble over his taxes, then if a subject of a sexual manner is thrown into the mix and talked about continually, then he'll REALLY have trouble answering why he wrote the 1972 essay.

but without the baggage. Bernie isn't the be-all and end-all for people who consider themselves progressives anymore. And all candidates, Bernie included, need to be thoroughly vetted - and as early in the process as possible. If there's something dodgy in someone's past financial dealings we need to know about it before we nominate a candidate with that kind of vulnerability. And we already have a president with a cult following; we sure don't need any more of that.

I got slagged elsewhere in this thread for actually sticking up for mean ol' Republican Jennifer Rubin, but she was right on the money this time. Bernie isn't exempt from answering policy questions or releasing his tax returns just because he's Bernie.

All I see is someone who has the greatest contempt for the Democratic party and isn't hesitant to let the world know that he thinks that Democrats are "corrupt" and "feeble" and that the party is "ideologically bankrupt" and that Democrats are the "party of the one percent" or the "party of the elite". It's difficult for me to express how angry it makes me when I hear someone say things like "there's no difference between the parties".

Things like that only create distrust and suspicion. It divides the party and a divided party is a weakened party. And that benefits the GOP, and Trump, and Russia.

If there's something dodgy in someone's past financial dealings we need to know about it before we nominate a candidate with that kind of vulnerability.
Absolutely true. There's a reason that he and Jane have been delaying and making excuses. Someone in that campaign has made the calculated (and cynical) decision that it's somehow "better" (or less damaging) for him to NOT release his tax returns, compared to the amount of damage that WOULD be caused if he DID release them.

Someone in that campaign thinks they can just ride-it-out until it's too late.

Fact of the matter is, it's the equivalent of Pleading-the-Fifth. Not definite proof of wrongdoing, but absolutely suspicious. And... it's a great big "FUCK YOU" to the American people, to the Democratic party, and to the other candidates.

Why would someone who's always made "honesty" and "transparency" a cornerstone of their principles NOW (suddenly and without explanation) be so willing to sacrifice those principles? You can't pick-and-choose like that. People are beginning to say that it's hypocritical. Maybe I'm starting to agree with them.
