In new flyer, Culinary Union warns members Sanders would ‘end’ their health care if elected president

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders would “end Culinary Healthcare” if elected president, according to a new one-pager the politically powerful Culinary Union is posting back of house on the Las Vegas Strip.

The new flyer, a copy of which was obtained by The Nevada Independent, compares the positions on health care, “good jobs” and immigration of six Demoratic presidential hopefuls who have come to the union’s headquarters over the last two months to court its members. But the primary difference outlined in the document, which is being distributed in both English and Spanish, is in the candidates’ positions on health care, taking particular aim at the Vermont senator over his Medicare-for-all policy, which would establish a single-payer, government run health insurance system.

The flyer says Sanders, if elected president, would “end Culinary Healthcare,” “require ‘Medicare For All,’” and “lower drug prices.”

The language it uses to describe the position of Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who also supports Medicare for all after a transition period, is much gentler: “‘Medicare for All,’” “replace Culinary Healthcare after 3-year transition or at end of collective bargaining agreements,” and “lower drug prices.”

it wasn't something I'd have wished to lose either. Assuming that everyone hates what they currently have and want to replace it is a mistake.

My corporate health plan when I worked for a big Corp was excellent. I would not have wanted to lose it.

In my current situation, I am truly insure that I would get enough back from MFA that would justify the taxes that I would face. Call them selfish, but a lot of people are making the same calculation.

I like Harry Reid, but he's definitely not in the Bernie/Warren/M4A camp.

Although it is kind of interesting that the wording under Bernie is so different from the wording under Warren, even though both are for M4A.

Olive’s on Vacation!
@olivebrinker

unions would be stronger if they didn’t have to spend time fighting for their members’ healthcare. unions would be *stronger* if medicare for all was passed, because it would allow them the freedom to negotiate for other benefits. this is so disingenuous.
Pete Buttigieg
@PeteButtigieg
There are 14 million union workers in America who have fought hard for strong, employer-provided health benefits. Medicare for All Who Want It protects their plans and union members' freedom to choose the coverage that's best for them.

That they are wrong. It will go over real well.

Other options can be crafted to cover non-Union workers. That is the point other candidates have made. The blanket approach that Sanders is proposing will cause million of voters to defend their healthcare plans that are decent or outright good. A story about people being bankrupted by medical expenses won't fly if people have not experienced that themselves and most Anericans have not. When I was in corporate America, I worked with several people that had severe healthcare issues that required expensive hospitalization, the company plan covered those people and they lived normal lives free of economic issues like bankruptcy - a large number of working people fall into that group, to shove something down their throats only leads to disaster.

Because there are lots of union members who would prefer M4A instead of having to concede on salary to get employer-based health insurance that can go away.

🙋🏻?♂️ union chief negotiator here. This is absolutely wrong. Medicare for all would free up bargaining power for wages and the common good, and it would protect union members against a bad employer pulling healthcare during a strike. Medicare for all is a gift to the labor movement.

Teacher here: This is garbage. I’d love to know that the THOUSANDS my district spends on healthcare could be allocated toward updated resources, more teachers, better salaries. And to know that I don’t have to bargain against ever increasing healthcare costs?

You are so right. Not all unions have good healthcare. Many are stuck with terrible hmo coverage which doesnt allow access to good doctors. If we had nation healthcare union employees would be able to bargain for higher wages and other benefits

Wants Medicare, they should definitely have the option to get that. I would never stop them from having that option.

Other unions should have the option to keep their bargained for care. You would stop them from having that option.

9. Their leaflet explained a bit more, and also chewed up trump but good...
Wed Feb 12, 2020, 05:35 PM
Feb 2020

The leaflet says some politicians promise “you will get more money for wages from the company if you give up Culinary Health Insurance,” but those politicians “have never sat at our bargaining table or been on a 24/7 6 years, 4 months and 10 days strike line,” a reference to an action taken by Culinary and other unions in 1991 against the Frontier Hotel and Casino that became one of the longest labor strikes in U.S. history.

“We will not hand over our healthcare for promises,” the leaflet said.

A copy of the leaflet, written in English and Spanish, was provided to The Associated Press by the union. The Nevada Independent first reported on the leaflet Friday.

Culinary Union spokeswoman Bethany Khan said the leaflet is not a sign of whether the union will endorse and said the union is not organizing against any candidates. She said the leaflet “just presented members with facts.”
...
“Everything in the leaflet is what we have told each candidate. They know what our message is,” she said.
