Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumHow Democratic talk of austerity plays into the Republican game plan
I don't get too impressed when Democratic candidates start talking about austerity early on in their runs for election, without telling us exactly what they plan to cut. They think they're being responsible adults by bringing the subject up, but here's what I see.
Who is happiest when Democrats have to decide what social programs they have to cut? Well, Republicans, of course. Their big game plan has always been to drown government in a bathtub and they haven't been very secretive about how they are going to do it. They give huge tax cuts to the rich at the same time that they use the military to push their own private agendas. And they deregulate everything, which creates more problems for us to solve down the future when we have to deal with the byproducts of their unscientific, thoughtless decisions.
So we end up with their dumps when we finally regain control of government and unless we're better at pointing fingers, we get blamed for the "failures of government" that they created. That can be anything from dealing with huge deficits to expenditures to clean up National disasters, to recessions and since Bush II and Trump, we can add rebuilding ties with foreign allies.
What a mess to inherit.
So, here is the thing: Will we create deterrence to Republicans if we cut social programs that help the very people Democrats are supposed to represent? Obviously not.
What I want to hear from the next Democratic candidate who talks austerity, is that we're going to tax the billionaires to lower the deficit and we're going to make cuts to the military. If it hurts the Republicans, it's a good thing for America. They don't have their heads in the right place and are only destroying the best of this country.

(34,661 posts)austerity need to understand,we have been using that model since Reagan. Europe finally figured out that it did not work and we are seeing it in real time. Now they are trying to reverse course by doing Major Capital Spending or as most know it,Infrastructure Programs.
When Mercedes-Benz announced layoffs of 15k yesterday, that was a major hit for the European Economy as a whole. Just a end result of Austerity Budget program for Germany and that as Germany goes,so goes Europe.
