Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said in New Hampshire on Wednesday that male candidates who believe they are better positioned to defeat President Trump because of their gender are "wrong."
I believe they think so, Warren told an attendee at a CNN town hall when asked if men have a better chance at defeating Trump because of their gender.
"But they would be wrong," she added.
Warren went on to explain that voters were skeptical that former President John F. Kennedy could be elected in 1960 due to his Roman Catholic faith, and how former President Barack Obama also faced doubts that he could be elected president as an African American.
Warren has repeatedly pushed back on the notion that her gender would be a roadblock on her path to the White House, noting her past electoral successes.
The issue of gender and electability took center stage in the primary last month after Warren said Sanders, during a private meeting in 2018, expressed doubts over whether a woman could be elected president in 2020.

(1,205 posts)When asked. Warren was asked a question and answered. That is something Warren does. Consistently answer questions asked.

(2,706 posts)No, the men and women candidates have an equal chance
Vs saying
There are male candidates that think they have a better chance.
The article makes it seem like the question generally asked whether men have a better chance and Warren saying some candidates (Bernie) thinks so but he is wrong.

(15,369 posts)What constitutes "electability" is who will vote for any given candidate.
Amy is an excellent candidate. But right now, Elizabeth is outpolling her.
Just sayin' ....

(14,565 posts)Yeah, I could go along with that. It would definitely be the ideal blueprint, especially against an incumbent. It is the reason I didn't think any of our 2020 candidates were ideal but that Beto had the greatest chance to be special.
Too bad Amy isn't male. A male version of her and no further thinking would be required.

(102,292 posts)I think for Warren and Buttigieg, they need to consistently redirect such discussions to focus on their respective strengths and plans for our future.
Neither SHOULD be an issue. Both likely WILL for some voters and especially if it is made a focal issue.
I feel bad that this is the case. I feel worse that it will likely be used as a cudgel against them and some MSM will enable such attacks. They can't let them.

Elizabeth was asked a direct question and she gave a direct answer. Was she supposed to say, "I have a plan for that" instead?
Besides, Hillary STILL won three million MORE votes than IMPOTUS in 2016. Women remain exceedingly frustrated because of that and constitute Warren's MOST dedicated supporters.
It is also very likely that Warren could pick up votes in the states where HRC did not do as well, enough to overcome the EC hurdle.
One thing is that Warren has ALREADY faced some of the worst GOPer attacks and slurs, to the extent that most are already defanged.
Will they resurface relentlessly? I have no doubt but that they will. But Warren will face them head-on and she WILL persist!
